Surgical management of Dupuytren's contracture in Europe: regional analysis of a surgeon survey and patient chart review

Aim We explored regional variations in the surgical management of patients with Dupuytren's contracture (DC) in 12 European countries using a surgeon survey and patient chart review. Methods Twelve countries participated: Denmark, Finland, Sweden (Nordic region); Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland (East); France, Germany, the Netherlands, UK (West); Italy, Spain (Mediterranean). For the survey, a ran

New shape minimum in Yb-160: Evidence for a triaxial, strongly deformed band

A high-spin rotational band was observed in the N=90 nucleus Yb-160 with moment of inertia and decay characteristics very similar to recently discovered sequences in Er-157,Er-158. These latter structures were discussed in terms of strongly deformed triaxial bands. Detailed cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations were performed that predict that well-deformed triaxial structures are also expected

Effects of soil disturbance on plant diversity of calcareous grasslands

A soil disturbance experiment was performed during two seasons in degraded, calcareous sandy grassland in southern Sweden. pH, extractable phosphorus, plant species richness and vegetation composition were analyzed. Mechanical soil disturbance had no effect on pH, and caused only a minor increase in extractable phosphorus. Positive effects compared to control plots were seen on plot scale (360 m2)

Learning effectiveness of discussion-based crisis management exercises

Crisis management exercises sometimes produce weak or vague learning results with very limited applicability. This paper addresses these problems by developing a theoretical framework on learning from crisis management exercises. The framework focuses on necessary requirements and beneficial factors for the conceptual learning of individuals from discussion-based exercises. The variation theory of

Beam dynamics and expected performance of Sweden's new storage-ring light source: MAX IV

MAX IV will be Sweden's next-generation high-performance synchrotron radiation source. The project has recently been granted funding and construction is scheduled to begin in 2010. User operation for a broad and international user community should commence in 2015. The facility is comprised of two storage rings optimized for different wavelength ranges, a linac-based short-pulse facility and a fre

Prediction of SAMPL4 host-guest binding affinities using funnel metadynamics

Accurately predicting binding affinities between ligands and macromolecules has been a much sought-after goal. A tremendous amount of resources can be saved in the pharmaceutical industry through accurate binding-affinity prediction and hence correct decision-making for the drug discovery processes. Owing to the structural complexity of macromolecules, one of the issues in binding affinity predict

Hand pose estimation by fusion of inertial and magnetic sensing aided by a permanent magnet

Tracking human body motions using inertial sensors has become a well-accepted method in ambulatory applications since the subject is not confined to a lab-bounded volume. However, a major drawback is the inability to estimate relative body positions over time because inertial sensor information only allows position tracking through strapdown integration, but doesn't provide any information about r

Tea Consumption and Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes in Europe: The EPIC-InterAct Case-Cohort Study

Background: In previous meta-analyses, tea consumption has been associated with lower incidence of type 2 diabetes. It is unclear, however, if tea is associated inversely over the entire range of intake. Therefore, we investigated the association between tea consumption and incidence of type 2 diabetes in a European population. Methodology/Principal Findings: The EPIC-InterAct case-cohort study wa

Detecting and Counting Small Pattern Graphs

We study the induced subgraph isomorphism problem and the general subgraph isomorphism problem for small pattern graphs. We present a new general method for detecting induced subgraphs of a host graph isomorphic to a fixed pattern graph by reduction to polynomial testing for nonidentity with zero over a field of finite characteristic. It yields new upper time bounds for several pattern graphs on f

Apoptosis in cultured spinal cord slices of neonatal mouse

Organotypic spinal cord slices from neonatal mammals could be a powerful model for evaluation of cell survival but also cell death mechanisms. The aim of this study was to establish an in vitro model for investigating cell survival and mechanism involved in cell death in neonatal spinal cord slices. The spinal cord was sliced and incubated into culture medium. The MTT assay was carried out to asse

Weighted least squares algorithm for target localization in distributed MIMO radar

In this paper, we address the problem of locating a target using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar with widely separated antennas. Through linearizing the bistatic range measurements, which correspond to the sum of transmitter-to-target and target-to-receiver distances, a quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) for target localization is formulated. The solution of the QCQP is

G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor 1 Mediates Acute Estrogen-Induced Cardioprotection via MEK/ERK/GSK-3β Pathway after Ischemia/Reperfusion.

Three types of estrogen receptors (ER) exist in the heart, Esr1, Esr2 and the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1, Gper1. However, their relative importance in mediating estrogen protective action is unknown. We found that, in the male mouse ventricle, Gper1 transcripts are three- and seventeen-fold more abundant than Esr1 and Esr2 mRNAs, respectively. Analysis of the three ER knockouts (Esr1-/-

Composition of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in single cells of three filamentous cyanobacteria using nuclear microprobe and traditional techniques

Intracellular of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus content in phytoplankton cells is traditionally measured using concentrates containing thousands to millions of cells. In the present study, we used a nuclear microprobe (NMP) to determine C, N and P concentrations in single filaments of 3 cyanobacteria species: Anabaena sp., Nodularia spumigena and Aphanizomenon flosaquae var. klebahnii isolated fr

Trends and cycles in regional economic growth: How spatial differences shaped the Swedish growth experience from 1860–2009

Using a novel dataset of regional GDP per worker from 1860 to 2009, this paper analyzes communalities in regional long-term growth trajectories for 24 Swedish regions. Wavelet Analysis and Principal Component Analysis are used to decompose regional growth trajectories and assess the extent that regional growth patterns share common trends and cyclical properties. The study found that regional grow
