Affinity fractionation of lymphocytes using a monolithic cryogel.
A new type of continuous, supermacroporous, monolithic, cryogel affinity adsorbent was developed, allowing specific fractionation and separation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes in a chromatographic format. The affinity adsorbent was used to design a novel cell separation strategy, which was based on the interaction of protein A from Staphylococcus aureus with cells bearing IgG antibodies on
Modeling the absorption of SO2 in a spray scrubber using the penetration theory
A model based on the penetration theory has been developed to calculate the dynamic absorption rate of sulfur dioxide into a droplet of limestone slurry. The model includes both instantaneous equilibrium reactions and reactions with finite rates; limestone dissolution, sulfite oxidation, gypsum crystallization and the hydrolysis reaction of CO2. The model has been used to quantify the mass transfe
Konsekvenser av reumatoid artrit i tidigt skede
The consequences of early rheumatoid arthritis were studied in a series of patients treated at University Hospital, Lund, during the period 1985-1989. Mean disease duration at enrollment was 12 months. Most of the patients have now been followed prospectively for five years, during which time disease activity and pain have increased markedly. Ability to perform the activities of daily living (ADL)
Predicting the dielectric constant-water content relationship using artificial neural networks
Accurate measurements of soil water content (theta) are important in various applications in hydrology and soil science. The time domain reflectometry (TDR) technique has been widely used for theta measurements during the last two decades. The TDR utilizes the apparent dielectric constant (K-s) for estimations of theta. The K-a-theta relationship has been described using both empirical and physica

Measurement of prompt photon cross sections in photoproduction at HERA
Results are presented on the photoproduction of isolated prompt photons, inclusively and associated with jets, in the gammap center of mass energy range 142 < W < 266 GeV. The cross sections are measured for the transverse momentum range of the photons 5 < E. T < 10 GeV and for associated jets with E-T(jet) > 4.5 GeV. They are measured differentially as a function of E-T(gamma), E-T(jet), the pseu

Silicon microstructures for high-speed and high-sensitivity protein identifications
Silicon microtechnology has been used to develop a microstructure toolbox in order to enable high accuracy protein identification. During the last 2 years we developed and applied monocrystalline silicon structures and established new automated protein analysis platforms, The development of a high throughput protein platform is presented where fully automated protein identifications are performed.
Lambda-polarization in e+e--annihilation at the Z0-pole
Strange quarks produced in e+e--annihilation at the Z0-pole are very strongly polarized. To study to which extent this polarization is transferred to the observable hadrons would give interesting information on the hadronization mechanism. Γ-particles produced with relatively large x-values are expected to frequently contain an originally produced s-quark. We estimate that Γ-particles with x>0.3 s
Biliary microflora in acute cholecystitis and the clinical implications
A prospective bacteriologic investigation was made in 43 consecutive patients (mean age 63 years) operated on for acute cholecystitis. Gallbladder bile and wall were cultured, using four methods and with special attention to optimal anaerobic technique. Cultures were positive in 72% of the patients, yielding a wide variety of species (21 species among 48 isolates). Anaerobes constituted 23% of the

Interactions between single latex particles and silica surfaces studied with AFM
The spreading of single styrene-acrylic latex particles on silicon oxide C surfaces was studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Three latexes with different glass transition temperature (Tg) were used and the effects of temperature, time and preparation method were investigated. Particle sizes and shape were measured with AFM and the contact angles were calculated. The observed rate for the s

Ergosterol content in ericaceous hair roots correlates with dark septate endophytes but not with ericold mycorrhizal colonization
The relationship between ergosterol content in ericaceous hair roots and ericoid mycorrhizal (ErM) colonization versus dark septate endophytic (DSE) hyphal colonization was examined in a dwarf shrub-dominated subarctic mire in Northern Sweden. Ergosterol content in hair roots did not correlate with ErM colonization in corresponding root samples. However, a significant positive relationship was fou
Natthärbärget som vandrande lösning
During most of the 20th century shelters for the homeless has been criticized as being of too low standard and an unworthy way of living in a welfare society. During the 1960s and 1970s most shelters in Sweden were shut down and replaced with other forms of housing for the homeless. Since the late 1980s and early 1990s the issue of homelessness has returned to the political agenda as an existing s
