Applying antenna selection in WLANs for achieving broadband multimedia communications

A combination of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and Multiple-input-multiple-output(MIMO) systems appears to be a promising solution for the PHY layer of indoor multimedia transmission via wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). Antenna selection is an excellent way of reducing the hardware costs of MIMO-OFDM systems while retaining high performance. This paper addresses two major

Charge carrier photogeneration and recombination in ladder-type poly(para-phenylene): Interplay between impurities and external electric field

Charge carrier generation and decay in m-LPPP polymer films were examined by means of femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in the time window of 100 fs-15 ns. Two modes of polaron formation with distinct behavior were identified, impurity induced in the absence of an external electric field and electric field induced in pristine film. While field induced charge generation is relatively sl

Selective catalytic reduction of NOx: a mathematical model for poison accumulation and conversion performance

A common control technique for limiting nitrogen oxide emissions is selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO, with NH,. The lifetime of the catalyst, which has a critical role in overall SCR system economics, is, however, limited due to deactivation by poisoning. A two-dimensional model was developed to describe poison accumulation and activity of an SCR catalyst. The model that has no adjustable

Solute transport dynamics by high-resolution dye tracer experiments - Image analysis and time moments

Accurate measurements of solute concentration are needed to conduct studies of solute transport process in unsaturated soil. In this paper we present a method of obtaining accurate measurements in and space using dye infiltration and image analysis. The soil color was related to the dye concentration in the soil (C-s) using 74 small calibration samples. The overall root mean square error (RMSE) 0.

A dynamic model to determine vibrations in involute helical gears

A method to determine the dynamic load between two rotating elastic helical gears is presented. The stiffness of the gear teeth is calculated using the finite element method and includes the contribution from the elliptic distributed tooth load. To make sure that the new incoming contacts which are the main excitation source are properly simulated, the necessary deformation of the gears is determi

Affine reconstruction from translational motion under various autocalibration constraints

In this paper algorithms for affine reconstruction from translational motion under various auto calibration constraints are presented. A general geometric constraint, expressed using the camera matrices, is derived and this constraint is used in a least square solution to the problem. Necessary and sufficient conditions for critical motions are derived and shown to depend on the knowledge of the i

Disk with high oxacillin content discriminates between methicillin-resistant and borderline methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus strains in disk diffusion assays using a low salt concentration

A separation between mecA+ strains of Staphylococcus aureus and strains lacking mecA was achieved by the disk diffusion assay and the agar dilution method, utilizing disks containing 5 microg of oxacillin and inocula of approximately 5 x 10(5) CFU/spot, respectively, provided that agar with 0 to 0.5% NaCl and incubation at 30 degrees C were employed. The 5-microg oxacillin disks clearly discrimina

Hepatitis C in Lithuania: incidence, prevalence, risk factors and viral genotypes

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been studied in many countries. However, little is known about HCV infection in Lithuania, a Baltic country, that was part of the former Soviet Union. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine and evaluate the etiology of acute viral hepatitis, the risk factors for acquiring HCV in comparison to hepatitis B virus (HBV),

Lung cancers attributable to environmental tobacco smoke and air pollution in non-smokers in different European countries: a prospective study

Background: Several countries are discussing new legislation on the ban of smoking in public places, and on the acceptable levels of traffic-related air pollutants. It is therefore useful to estimate the burden of disease associated with indoor and outdoor air pollution. Methods: We have estimated exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) and to air pollution in never smokers and ex-smokers in

The probability of successful IVF outcome after poor ovarian response

Background. To evaluate the relationship between age and poor ovarian response to pregnancy and cancellation rate after IVF stimulation. Methods. Poor ovarian response was defined as 37 years, who were poor responders, had a significantly lower pregnancy rate per OPU (3.0%) compared to normal to high responders in the same age group (22.1%, p < 0.05). Also, 43.6% of women > 37 years, who were cla

A Treatise on the Unity and Trinity of God by Israel of Kashkar (d. 872). Introduction, edition and word index

The present work is a contribution to the study of Christian Arabic literature. An apologetic treatise on the unity and trinity of God incorrectly attributed to Yahya ibn Adi (d. 974) is edited for the very first time and provided with a comprehensive word index. The edition is based on six manuscripts found in Egypt. Four of these manuscripts have so far not been known to scholarly research. The

Measurements of Turbulent Flame Speed and Integral Length Scales in a Lean Stationary Premixed Flame

Turbulent premixed natural gas - air flame velocities have been measured in a stationary axi-symmetric burner using LDA. The flame was stabilized by letting the flow retard toward a stagnation plate downstream of the burner exit. Turbulence was generated by letting the flow pass through a plate with drilled holes. Three different hole diameters were used, 3, 6 and 10 mm, in order to achieve differ

Simulation of ethanol production processes based on enzymatic hydrolysis of woody biomass

The process simulator ASPEN PLUS was used for simulation of an ethanol production process based on enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials. Various process configurations were studied to increase the overall yield of ethanol and to reduce the energy consumption in the process. An increased utilization of the pentosan fraction was achieved by a complex recycling of streams in the process.

Dimensionless quantities in fire growth : the weighting of heat release rate

The role of various material fire properties in the model of fire growth developed by Magnusson and Karlsson [l] is examined in the context of the dimensionless variables containing them. It is shown that their successful representation of their calculations by power law (one for fires which do not flashover and one for those which do) permits one to devise weighting factors for the rate of heat r
