Protective role of sympathetic nerve activity to exercising skeletal muscle in the regulation of capillary pressure and fluid filtration

This study describes the integrated sympathetic/metabolic control of capillary pressure (Pc) and filtration in cat skeletal muscle as studied during graded exercise and superimposed graded (2, 6 and 16 Hz) vasoconstrictor nerve excitation. The applied technique permitted simultaneous analysis of the underlying changes of resistance in the whole vascular bed (RT) and in its large-bore arterial resi

Release of model compounds from "plum-pudding"-type gels composed of microgel particles randomly dispersed in a gel matrix

A novel gel structure called the "plum-pudding" gel was described by us previously. I The gel was composed of randomly dispersed microgel particles ("plums") in a conventional hydrogel network. Depending on the preparation conditions, the microgels can be incorporated into the gel as expanded networks or dense collapsed globules. Where the microgel particles exist as collapsed globules, they have

Comparative analyses of population structure in two subspecies of Nigella degenii: Evidence for diversifying selection on pollen-color dimorphisms

Flower color can be a major determinant of plant fitness, not only because of preferential visitation by pollinators but also because of pleiotropic relationships between the expression of floral pigments and biochemically related compounds that influence vegetative performance variables. Different environments may therefore favor different pigmentation phenotypes. We examined whether spatially va

Cultured autologous fibroblasts augment epidermal repair

Background. Autologous dermal fibroblasts may be useful in the treatment of skin wounds and for the enhancement of keratinocyte proliferation. This paper addressed the following questions: (1) can cultured fibroblasts (CF) be transplanted as suspensions to full-thickness skin wounds and do they influence wound healing; (2) will the transplanted CF be integrated into the new dermis; (3) can a trans

Essays on Risk in International Financial Markets

Speciellt undersöks tre olikaThis thesis deals with techniques to model risk in financial markets and consists of four separate essays. The thesis begins with an introduction in chapter one, while chapter two to chapter five contains the four essays. The first essay examines the implication of using various risk measures for portfolio selection. Specifically, three risk measures are examined: variance, Value at Risk (VaR) an

Inhibitor development in hemophiliacs: The roles of genetic versus environmental factors

Approximately 5 to 7% of patients with hemophilia A have inhibitory antibodies to factor (F) VIII, which increases to similar to 13% in patients with severe disease. The strongest determinant of the risk of inhibitor development identified is the type of mutation in the FVIII gene that gives rise to the disease. However, accumulating evidence clearly indicates that other genetic factors (e.g., maj

Molecular dynamics above the smectic A-isotropic phase transition of thermotropic liquid crystals studied by NMR

This Letter presents a proton fast field cycling Nuclear Magnetic Resonance study of the molecular dynamics in the region above the smectic A-isotropic phase transition in thermotropic liquid crystals. The proton spin-lattice relaxation time was measured as a function of temperature at different Larmor frequencies and the experimental results were interpreted in term of the Landau De Gennes theory

Modeling the wind structure of AG Peg by fitting of C IV and N V resonance doublets

The latest outburst of AG Peg has lasted for 150 years, which makes itthe slowest nova eruption ever recorded. During the time of IUEobservations (1978-1995) line profiles and intensity ratios of the N Vand C IV doublet components changed remarkably, and we discuss plausiblereasons. One of them is radiative pumping of Fe II which is investigatedby studying the fluorescence lines from pumped levels

Determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers at trace levels in environmental waters using hollow-fiber microporous membrane liquid-liquid extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

In this study, we present a simple and easy-to-use extraction method that is based on a hollow-fiber microporous membrane liquid-liquid extraction (HF-MMLLE), as an extraction technique, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine a group of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), at trace levels in aqueous samples. The hollow-fiber mem
