Posttranscriptional regulation of TNFalpha expression via eukaryotic initiation factor 4E (eIF4E) phosphorylation in mouse macrophages.

Resident mouse macrophages secrete Tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) upon challenge with LPS. The production of TNFα is controlled not only at the transcription of the gene, but also by strong posttranscriptional regulation. When macrophages are stimulated with LPS different signal transduction pathways become activated. Here we show that the combination of the 2 kinases p38 and MEK and presumably ER

Advances in targetry with thin diamond-like carbon foils

Thin and stable diamond-like carbon (DLC) foils, which were fabricated at the Kurchatov Institute by sputter deposition, have proved recently to be advantageous for stripping and secondary electron timing of high energy heavy ions in a number of accelerator experiments. This resulted in expanding applications of these DLC foils which necessitated further development efforts directed toward the fol

Performance of sulfhydryl boron hydride in patients with grade III and IV astrocytoma: a basis for boron neutron capture therapy

This study investigated the rationale of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) for the treatment of Grade III and IV astrocytoma. The European Community joint research program on BNCT plans to use sulfhydryl boron hydride (BSH) in clinical trials. The work presented here, examines the performance of BSH in eight patients with Grade III and IV astrocytoma using a measurement technique which precisel

Tooth loss and bone mineral density among women: a cross-sectional survey

OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between total tooth loss and bone mineral density to determine whether the former can be used as a surrogate marker of the latter. DESIGN: A community based cross-sectional survey. SETTING: The community-study area of the Faculty of Medicine, Galle. PARTICIPANTS: A group of randomly selected 327 women volunteers aged 32 to 97 years. MEASUREMENTS: Anthropometr

Dissociative NH3 adsorption on the Si(100)2 × 1 surface at 300 K

High resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy has been used to determine how NH3 adsorbs on the Si(100)2 × 1 surface at 300 K. We find that the NH3 molecules dissociate into NH2 and H on adsorption. Combination bands, overtones and double losses for the Si---NH2 group are observed. An anneal to 800 K is sufficient to dissociate the adsorbed NH2 groups while the majority of the Si---H bonds rem

Fakultetsopponenten sammanfattar: Josefin Brüde Sundins En riktig rektor.

I doktorsavhandlingen En riktig rektor. Om ledarskap, genus och skolkulturer, som Josefin Brü

VOn (n >= 3) defects in irradiated and heat-treated silicon

Local vibrational mode (LVM) spectroscopy has been used to study the evolution of vacancy-oxygen-related defects (VOn) in the temperature range 300-700 degrees C in carbon-lean Cz-Si samples irradiated with MeV electrons or neutrons. New experimental data confirming an attribution of the absorption bands at 910, 976 and 1105 cm(-1) to the VO3 complex are obtained. In particular, a correlated gener

Working Capacity and Well-Being after Radical Cystectomy with Continent Cutaneous Diversion.

Objectives: The primary aim was to compare the working capacity in patients with continent urinary diversion with a control group. Secondary aims were to assess the changes in electrolyte and acid-base homeostasis and the functional status during strenuous physical activity, and finally, the well-being in the two groups. Methods: Eleven patients who had undergone radical cystectomy and continent c

Jag understryker att föremåls och monuments betydelser var beroeIn the thesis the author discusses how materiel culture changed when it was incorporated into a local society. The discussion is based on graves, rock carvings and bronze items in south Scandinavia during the periods Late Neolithic and Bronze Age, 2350-500 BC. The thesis? starting point is a praxis perspective. The meaning of artefacts and monuments depended upon how they were used. The use of th

Postoperative on-line monitoring with intraperitoneal microdialysis is a sensitive clinical method for measuring increased anaerobic metabolism that correlates to the cytokine response

Background: Visceral ischaemia and cytokine release are early stages in the development of shock and multiorgan failure. Because of lack of methods to measure anaerobic metabolism or visceral hypoxia in the early phase, diagnosis is not usually established until shock and organ failure are evident. Methods: Nineteen patients were studied postoperatively after major abdominal gastrointestinal surge

Patient satisfaction and return to work after endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery

One hundred twenty-eight patients with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome were evaluated before surgery and 3 and 6 months after unilateral endoscopic carpal tunnel release. The variables analyzed included patient demographics, symptoms and signs, activities of daily living (ADL), sensibility and strength measurements, preoperative distal motor latency of the median nerve, operating surgeon, postop
