Hereditary and acquired angioedema: problems and progress: proceedings of the third C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency workshop and beyond
Hereditary angioedema (HAE), a rare but life-threatening condition, manifests as acute attacks of facial, laryngeal, genital, or peripheral swelling or abdominal pain secondary to intra-abdominal edema. Resulting from mutations affecting C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH), inhibitor of the first complement system component, attacks are not histamine-mediated and do not respond to antihistamines or cor

The Pd (100)-(root 5 x root 5)R27 degrees-O surface oxide: A LEED, DFT and STM study
Using low energy electron diffraction (LEED), density functional theory (DFT) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we have re-analyzed the Pd(100)-(root 5 x root 5)R27 degrees-O surface oxide structure consisting, in the most recent model, of a strained PdO(101) layer on top of the Pd(100) surface [M. Todorova et al., Surf. Sci. 541 (2003) 101]. Both, DFT simulations using the Vienna Ab initio
Late-onset postpartum hemorrhage from placental bed subinvolution: a case report
BACKGROUND: Placental bed subinvolution is an underestimated cause of severe, late-onset postpartum hemorrhage. CASE: A case of placental bed subinvolution caused abnormal uterine bleeding in the late postpartum period. Because of difficulties in establishing the diagnosis, massive, intractable and life-threatening uterine hemorrhage occurred, leading to hysterectomy. CONCLUSION: Early recognition
Human hemoglobin adducts following exposure to hexahydrophthalic anhydride and methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride
Hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA) and methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA) are highly allergenic compounds used in the chemical industry. The aim of this study was to characterize the protein adducts in erythrocytes following exposure to HHPA and MHHPA. Blood and urine samples were obtained from 51 HHPA- and MHHPA-exposed workers. Erythrocytic proteins from HHPA- and MHHPA-exposed workers we
Growth and capture activities of nematophagous fungi in soil visualized by low temperature scanning electron microscopy
Growth and capture activities of nematophagous fungi in soil were observed using the low temperature scanning electron microscopy technique. The advantages of this sample preparation technique, compared with conventional scanning electron microscopy, are that it does not involve chemical fixation and dehydration of the sample and, therefore, gives a more accurate view of organ isms in soil. Growth
Doppler velocimetry for predicting outcome of pregnancies with decreased fetal movements
Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate umbilical artery (UA) and uterine artery (Ut.A) Doppler velocimetry in a low-risk pregnancy group with decreased fetal movements. Material and methods. Eight hundred and eighty-eight women were examined because of decreased fetal movements. All fetuses were alive on maternal admission. In all cases, UA and Ut.A Doppler velocimetries were performed, as wel
Stratigraphic evidence for a high marine shore-line during the Late Weichselian deglaciation on the Kullen Peninsula, southern Sweden
Mineral magnetic properties and the carbon content of a sediment sequence in Lake Kullatorpssjon on the Kullen Peninsula in northwest Scania, southern Sweden, were investigated. Diatom and ostracod analyses were undertaken for palaeoecological reconstruction and a chronology was constructed from accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating of terrestrial plant remains and mosses. Five st
Insulation of safety footwear: effects of steel toe cap in the cold
Abstract in Uncoded languages Praegune kaitsejalatsite testimise standard (EN 344) kontrollib soojapidavuslikke omadusi vaid jalatsi ühes punktis mõõtes temperatuuri muutust. Meetod, mis kasutab termilist jala mudelit võimaldab mõõta jalatsi soojaisolatsiooni üheaegselt erinevates piirkondades ning ühtlasi ka jalatsi kui terviku soojaisolatsiooni. Selle uurimuse käigus on soojendatava jala meetodiPresent standard on safety footwear (EN 344) checks the insulation only at one point in the shoes by means of measuring the temperature change. A method that uses thermal foot model allows to measure footwear insulation simultaneously at various locations and for whole footwear as total. In the cause of the present research the method of heated foot model has been developed further. Now it is poss
Haematopoietic malignancies in rheumatoid arthritis: lymphoma risk and characteristics after exposure to tumour necrosis factor antagonists
Background: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis ( RA) are at increased risk of malignant lymphomas, and maybe also of leukaemia and multiple myeloma. The effect of tumour necrosis factor (TNF) antagonists on lymphoma risk and characteristics is unclear. Objective: To assess expected rates and relative risks of haematopoietic malignancies, especially those associated with TNF antagonists, in large p
Early use of artificial sensibility in hand transplantation
Hands were transplanted from brain-dead donors for the treatment of two male unilateral amputees, aged 35 years and 32 years, involved in the Italian Hand Transplantation Programme. Each had lost his right dominant hand, in a farming accident and an explosion, respectively. In one case artificial sensibility was applied postoperatively using a Sensor Glove that transformed vibrotactile stimuli ind
Clinicians underestimate gastrointestinal symptoms and overestimate quality of life in renal transplant recipients: A multinational survey of nephrologists
Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common in renal transplant recipients and are associated with impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We investigated clinician attitudes to GI symptoms and HRQoL in these patients by surveying 145 nephrologists from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway. In total, 79 clinicians responded. They estimated that 20% of their patients experienced GI discomfor
Pressure-induced phase transitions in alpha-ZrMo2O8
We report high-pressure Raman, infrared (IR), and optical-absorption spectra of alpha-ZrMo2O8 (trigonal) up to 38 GPa at room temperature. The spectroscopic studies are consistent with diffraction results that show that alpha-ZrMo2O8 transforms into delta-ZrMo2O8 (monoclinic) at about 1 GPa and the delta phase converts to the epsilon phase (trielinic) at about 2.0 GPa. Optical-absorption measureme
Airway inflammation in smokers with nonobstructive and obstructive chronic bronchitis
To assess the manifestation and location of airway inflammation in smokers with chronic bronchitis (CB) or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), we lavaged the airways of 12 smokers with CB and 11 smokers with COPD and coexisting CB (OCB). For comparison, the airways of 5 asymptomatic smokers (AS) and 10 healthy nonsmokers (HNS) were lavaged. In all cases, the first lavage aliquot, labeled
A steady-state and flow-through cell for screen-printed eight-electrode arrays
An electrochemical cell has been developed enabling amperometric steady-state- and flow-injection measurements with screen-printed arrays consisting of eight working electrodes (circle divide = 1 mm) arranged radially around a printed Ag/AgCl reference electrode in the centre. The cell contained a rotator, providing similar hydrodynamics over all the working electrodes in the array, which was manu
O2-binding to heme: electronic structure and spectrum of oxyheme, studied by multiconfigurational methods
We have studied the ground state of a realistic model of oxyheme with multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2). Our results show that the ground-state electronic structure is strongly multiconfigurational in character. Thus, the wavefunction is a mixture of many different configurations, of which the three most important ones are approximately 1FeII–1O2 (70%), (12%) and 3FeII
