Genetics of complications in patients with type 2 diabetes

Popular Abstract in English Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a polygenic disorder characterized by impaired insulin secretion or insulin action in which genes interact with the environment to cause the disease. T2D represent 90% of all patients with diabetes. The disease is increasing globally, with an estimated prevalence of 592 million affected by 2035. According to World Health Organization records, apType 2 diabetes (T2D) is a polygenic disease caused by an interaction between genetic and environmental factors such as low physical activity, smoking, and obesity. The disease is associated with devastating chronic microvascular (nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy) and macrovascular (coronary heart disease and stroke) complications. Genome-wide associated studies (GWASs) have been an unbias

A search for excited neutrinos in e(-) p collisions at HERA

A search for first generation excited neutrinos is performed using the full e(-) p data sample collected by the HI experiment at HERA at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV, corresponding to a total luminosity of 184 pb(-1). The electroweak decays of excited neutrinos nu* -> nu gamma, v* -> nu Z and nu* -> eW with subsequent hadronic or leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons are considered. No evide

Rare coding variants and X-linked loci associated with age at menarche

More than 100 loci have been identified for age at menarche by genome-wide association studies; however, collectively these explain only similar to 3% of the trait variance. Here we test two overlooked sources of variation in 192,974 European ancestry women: low-frequency proteincoding variants and X-chromosome variants. Five missense/nonsense variants (in ALMS1/LAMB2/TNRC6A/TACR3/PRKAG1) are asso

Nonequilibrium Green's Function Model for Simulation of Quantum Cascade Laser Devices Under Operating Conditions

A simulation scheme based on nonequilibrium Green's functions for biased periodic semiconductor heterostructure devices is presented in detail. The implementation can determine current and optical gain both for small and large optical fields. Specific results for superlattices, quantum cascade lasers, and quantum cascade detectors are shown which demonstrate the capabilities of the approach.

Osteoporosis in elderly women; Bone traits, fracture and the PTH gene complex

Background: Fragility fractures are a major health problem world wide and the numbers are growing due to ageing populations. Early identification of individuals at risk for osteoporosis and fracture, enabling preventive measures and treatment is essential. Bone strength is partly dependent on lifestyle but genetic factors account for approximately 70-80%. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is the key regul

Health-related quality of life 5 years after carpal tunnel release among patients with diabetes: a prospective study with matched controls.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy encountered in diabetes. The short-term improvement after carpal tunnel release has previously been demonstrated not to differ between patients with and without diabetes, despite a marked impairment in health-related quality of life (HRQL) among the former. In this study, we compare HRQL 5 years after carpal tunnel release betwe

Neoadjuvant/Downstaging Radiochemotherapy in Marginally Resectable Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is a challenging disease due to the low resection rate at the time of initial diagnosis. A relatively new classification of marginally resectable pancreatic cancer has emerged and there is some evidence that this subgroup of patients may benefit from neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy. The first major definition of marginally resectable pancreatic cancer was made at M. D. Anderson Can

Binding of Flavivirus Nonstructural Protein NS1 to C4b Binding Protein Modulates Complement Activation

The complement system plays a pivotal protective role in the innate immune response to many pathogens including flaviviruses. Flavivirus nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) is a secreted nonstructural glycoprotein that accumulates in plasma to high levels and is displayed on the surface of infected cells but absent from viral particles. Previous work has defined an immune evasion role of flavivirus NS1

Genome-wide association study identifies three new melanoma susceptibility loci

We report a genome-wide association study for melanoma that was conducted by the GenoMEL Consortium. Our discovery phase included 2,981 individuals with melanoma and 1,982 study-specific control individuals of European ancestry, as well as an additional 6,426 control subjects from French or British populations, all of whom were genotyped for 317,000 or 610,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs

Imprinted polymer beads enabling direct and selective molecular separation in water

In this paper, we describe the synthesis of water-compatible Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP) microspheres by nanoparticle-stabilized emulsion (Pickering emulsion) polymerization. During the polymerization, the amount of the porogen used not only affected the stability of the Pickering emulsion but also the specific molecular recognition of the obtained MIP microspheres. Under optimized conditi

Moralisk historieskrivning - utan moralism. Kritiska anmärkningar till den moderna kyrkohistorien

A moral Historiography without Moralism. Critical views on modern Church History. Efforts for realism without moral judgments have identified morals with present legislation. This leads to positivistic positions, where moral questions are being answered with references to historical legal situations only, without moral implications. With the political changes 1989-1990 followed a change in histori

Importance of lipopolysaccharide aggregate disruption for the anti-endotoxic effects of heparin cofactor II peptides

Lipid membrane and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) interactions were investigated for a series of amphiphilic and cationic peptides derived from human heparin cofactor II (HCII), using dual polarization interferometry, ellipsometry, circular dichroism (CD), cryoTEM, and z-potential measurements. Antimicrobial effects of these peptides were compared to their ability to disorder bacterial lipid membranes,

Ticagrelor vs. clopidogrel in patients with acute coronary syndromes and diabetes: a substudy from the PLATelet inhibition and patient Outcomes (PLATO) trial

Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have high platelet reactivity and are at increased risk of ischaemic events and bleeding post-acute coronary syndromes (ACS). In the PLATelet inhibition and patient Outcomes (PLATO) trial, ticagrelor reduced the primary composite endpoint of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke, but with similar rates of major bleeding compared with clopidogre

Evaluating the Governance Model of Hardware-Dependent Software Ecosystems – A Case Study of the Axis Ecosystem

Ecosystem governance becomes gradually more relevant for a set of companies or actors characterized by symbiotic relations evolved on the top of a technological platform, i.e. a software ecosystem. In this study, we focus on the governance of a hardware-dependent software ecosystem. More specifically, we evaluate the governance model applied by Axis, a network video and surveillance camera produce

Polarization corrections to single-particle energies studied within the energy-density-functional and quasiparticle random-phase approximation approaches

Background: Models based on using perturbative polarization corrections and mean-field blocking approximation give conflicting results for masses of odd nuclei. Purpose: We systematically investigate the polarization and mean-field models, implemented within self-consistent approaches that use identical interactions and model spaces, to find reasons for the conflicts between them. Methods: For den
