Material consumption in the healthcare sector: Strategies to reduce its impact on climate change - The case of Region Scania in South Sweden

The healthcare sector constitutes a major part of the economy of developed nations and consumes significant quantities of consumables. The Region Scania commissioned IIIEE, Lund University, to develop a management tool for strategic decision-making in order to reduce the climate impact indirectly derived from material, consumption. The tool was streamlined to fit operational conditions at Region S

Role of endothelium-derived nitric oxide in the regulation of tonus in large-bore arterial resistance vessels, arterioles and veins in cat skeletal muscle

The role of endothelium-derived nitric oxide in the regulation of vascular resistance (tonus) in cat skeletal muscle was studied with the use of NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA), a specific inhibitor of nitric oxide formation from L-arginine. The study was performed with a whole-organ technique which permits simultaneous, continuous and quantitative recordings of resistance reactions in the whole

Structure and thermodynamics of protein-polymer solutions: Effects of spatially distributed hydrophobic surface residues

Protein-polymer association in solution driven by a short-range attraction has been investigated using a simple coarse-grain model solved by Monte Carlo simulations. The effect of the spatial distribution of the hydrophobic surface residues of the protein on the adsorption of weakly hydrophobic polymers at variable polymer concentration, polymer length, and polymer stiffness has been considered. S

Development and Resolution of Allergic Airway Inflammation in vivo: effects of therapeutic intervention

Till exempel karakteriseras bronksleEosinophils, containing tissue toxic granule proteins, are regarded a culprit cell in asthma pathogenesis. Using animal and human experimental models of asthma effects on eosinophilic airway inflammation were investigated in vivo. The current research paradigm regarding spontaneous and steroid-induced clearance of airway tissue eosinophils exclusively involves death through apoptosis followed by p

Computational biology of blood disorders: Patterns and algorithms

The morphological and molecular characterization and of malignant blood disorders is pivotal to ensure a correct diagnosis, guide therapy, and, in the longer term, to identify their molecular causes. Over the past several years, new technology has increased our abilities to describe, typecast, and understand hematologic malignancies beyond what was previously possible. This thesis concerns two suc

On the Efficient Estimation of Blood Velocities

Pulsed wave (PW) Doppler ultrasound systems are commonly used to examine blood flow dynamics and the technique plays a very important role in numerous diagnostic applications. Commonly, narrow-band PW systems estimate the blood velocity using an autocorrelation-based estimator. Herein, we examine a recently proposed hybrid frequency estimator, and via extensive numerical simulations using simulate

The filler EH in Swedish

Findings from a pilot study on the distribution, function and phonetic realization of the filler EH in interviews from SweDia2000 interviews are presented. The results show that EH occurs almost exclusively after function words at the beginning of constituents. The phonetic realization of EH was seen to be of three basic forms: a middle-high vowel (e.g. [e], [ɛ], [ə]), a vowel+nasal (e.g. [ɛm], [ə

Indicators for environmental policy integration in the food supply chain (the case of the tomato ketchup supply chain and the integrated product policy)

Following the recent developments in supply chain management and environmental policy integration, it became evident that for successfully addressing the environmental challenges a holistic approach is necessary. After identifying a lack of sufficient information on the environmental performance and the uptake of the respective policy measures from food supply chain perspective, a research has bee

Binding of C4b-binding protein: A molecular mechanism of serum resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae

We screened 29 strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and found 16/21 strains that resisted killing by normal human serum and 0/8 serum sensitive strains that bound the complement regulator, C4b-binding protein (C4bp). Microbial surfacebound C4bp demonstrated cofactor activity. We constructed gonococcal strains with hybrid porin (Por) molecules derived from each of the major serogroups (Por1A and Por1B)

Survey of E1 Transitions in the Mass A~60 Region

A survey of parity-changing E1 transitions has been pursued in N>~Z nuclei near 56Ni using data from an EUROBALL experiment. Linear polarization measurements have been combined with angular correlations of coincident gamma rays to determine the electromagnetic character of numerous transitions. The impact of the results on shell-model parametrizations is briefly discussed.

The nature of selection on anhydrobiotic capacity in tardigrades

Tardigrades are well known for their capacity to enter an anhydrobiotic state, and remain ametabolic for several years. Yet the evolutionary background, and the forces of natural selection that act on anhydrobiotic capacity have remained unexplored. In this paper, I review the basic problem of anhydrobiosis and the phenotypic traits that may be the main targets of natural selection for improved an

An altered immune response to Epstein-Barr virus in multiple sclerosis - A prospective study

Objective: To investigate the association between human herpesviruses and multiple sclerosis ( MS), as well as between measles virus and MS. Methods: The authors identified prospectively collected serum samples from 73 MS cases and retrospective sera from 161 MS cases in two population-based serum bank registers. Analyses of IgG antibody responses in cases and matched referents were performed for

Complete Spectroscopy in High-spin Cranking Calculations

Exact and approximate quantum numbers of the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) formalism are exploited to calculate excited bands in fixed configurations with the energy of the individual bands minimized with respect to deformation for all spin values. The formalism is applied to Cu-59, where all bands which appear important in the decay out of the superdeformed band are calculated.

Folding intermediates of wild-type and mutants of barnase. I. use of @f-value analysis and m-values to probe the cooperative nature of the folding pre-equilibrium

It is difficult to determine whether transient folding intermediates have a cooperative (or first-order) folding transition without measuring their rates of formation directly. An intermediate I could be formed by a second-order transition from a denatured state D that is progressively changed into I as conditions are changed. We have not been able to monitor the rate of formation of the folding i
