Huntingtons sjukdom - ännu ett galet protein?
Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by an expanded CAG repeat. It is characterized by motor and cognitive disturbances, as well as cellular dysfunction and loss in the basal ganglia and the cerebral cortex. The mutant protein huntingtin aggregates in cells. The toxicity of mutant huntingtin, or the loss of its normal function, causes disruption of cellul
Wobbling excitations in odd-A nuclei with high-j aligned particles
Using the particle-rotor model in which one high-j quasiparticle is coupled to the core of triaxial shape, wobbling excitations are studied. The family of wobbling phonon excitations can be characterized by: (a) very similar intrinsic structure while collective rotation shows the wobbling feature; (b) strong B(E2;I-->I-1) values for Deltan(w)=1 transitions where n(w) expresses the number of wobbli
Familial occurrence of microscopic colitis: a report on five families
BACKGROUND: The etiology and pathogenesis of microscopic colitis is unknown. Whether genetic predisposition is of importance, as in many other gastrointestinal diseases, is unknown. Familial occurrence of collagenous colitis has earlier been reported only in two families. METHODS: Familial occurrence of microscopic colitis was searched for in a Swedish national microscopic colitis register. RESULT
Development of Detector Systems for Internal and Fixed Target Heavy Ion Physics Experiments
This thesis deals with intermediate energy heavy ion reactions with the particular aim to study the nuclear matter equation of state which defines the relation between statistical parameters of a fermionic system. The development of equipment for two experiments, CA47 at The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden and R16 at Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI), Groningen, The Netherlands, are d
Asian Models of Agricultural Development and their Relevance to Afrika
This working paper discusses the different Asian experiences of the Green Revolution from the late 1960s to the 1980s in the perspective of earlier developments of agricultural intensification. The intention of the paper is to identify common features and conditions contributing to the considerable success of Asian agriculture over the past 30 years. The authors argue that the Green Revolution mus
Undervisning i konsultationsmetodik behövs i läkarutbildningen.
At Lund University Medical School communication skills are taught during both the preclinical and clinical part of the medical programme. As part of the training during the 5th year the students are required to videotape at least one patient consultation at a local primary health care centre. The students then meet in groups of 6-7 participants and a group leader to watch the recorded consultation
New structural chromosomal rearrangements in congenital leukemia
The karyotypic abnormalities and clinical data on three patients in whom acute leukemia was diagnosed within the first 6 months of life are presented. The four structural chromosomal rearrangements detected in the bone marrow from these patients, i.e., t(7;12)(q36;p13) and t(1;19)(q11;q11) in case 1, t(2;10;11;12)(q21q31;p13;q13;q24) in case 2, and t(11;19)(q23;p13) in case 3, have not previously
Carriage of penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae by children in day-care centers during an intervention program in Malmo, Sweden
BACKGROUND: An increasing incidence of penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (PRP) was detected in Malmo in 1994. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clonality and factors facilitating the spread of PRP among children in day-care centers (DCCs). METHODS: We used phenotypic and DNA-fingerprinting methods in conjunction with epidemiologic data from the South Swedish Pneumococcal Intervention Project's in

Measurements of the interaction cross sections for Ar and Cl isotopes
We have measured the interaction cross sections (σI) of 31–40Ar and 31–37Cl on carbon targets at energies of around 950 A MeV. The effective matter radii for these nuclei were deduced by a Glauber-model analysis. Combining our matter radii with measured charge radii for Ar isotopes, we could deduce the proton-skin thicknesses for the 32–40Ar isotopes, which were found to increase monotonically wit
A fishy mosasaur: the axial skeleton of Plotosaurus (Reptilia, Squamata) reassessed
The concept of convergence, that is, how unrelated animals independently evolve similar morphological traits, is a fundamental aspect of evolution. Hitherto, the Mesozoic ichthyosaurs were regarded as the sole obligate marine reptiles that achieved a fully streamlined body and a semilunate tail fluke. However, analyses of vertebral centrum morphometrics and process orientation have revealed that a
Transport and sorption phenomena in concrete and other porous media
The work presented in this thesis is mainly focused on transport processes involved in service life predictions of concrete. Two papers and three reports deal with ion transport in pore solution of concrete. One paper and one report deals with moisture transport in concrete and the remaining papers and reports deal with absorption and physical properties related to adsorption for different materia
Chlorophyll biosynthesis in higher plants. Regulatory aspects of 5-aminolevulinate formation
Chlorophyll, heme, phytochrome and siroheme biosynthesis in higher plants is regulated by the supply of their precursor 5-aminolevulinate (ALA), which is derived from glutamate. Glutamate conversion to ALA occurs only in the plastid and requires chloroplast coded tRNA(Glu) and nuclear coded glutamyl-tRNA synthetase, glutamyl-tRNA reductase and glutamate 1-semialdehyde aminotransferase. The chromos

Integral equation for spin dependent unintegrated parton distributions incorporating double In-2(1/x) effects at low x
In this paper we derive an integral equation for the evolution of unintegrated (longitudinally) polarized quark and gluon parton distributions. The conventional Catani-Ciafaloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) framework is modified at small x in order to incorporate the QCD expectations concerning the double ln(2)(1/x) resummation at low x for the integrated distributions. Lifetime measurements for ground term transitions in TaII, WII, and ReII
Lifetime measurements have been made for the radiation emitted in the ground term transitions of the nominal form 5s(2)5p(6)5d(x)6s-5s(2)5p(6)5d(x)6p in Ta II (x = 3), W II (x = 4), and Re II (x = 5). Supporting theoretical calculations have also been performed to characterize configuration interaction and to estimate the degree of decay branching of the upper levels. The lifetime measurements hav
Novel properties of antimicrobial peptides
Endogenous peptide antibiotics are known as evolutionarily old components of innate immunity. Due to interaction with cell membrane these peptides cause permeabilization of the membrane and lysis of invading microbes. However, some studies proved that antimicrobial peptides are universal multifunctional molecules and their functions extend far beyond simple antibiotics. In this review we present a
