Yeast strains from more than 31 different genera were screened for the enantioselective reduction of bicyclo[2.2.2]-octane-2,6-dione (1). Reducing activity was found in 80% of the screened yeasts. The quadratic term in the Taylor expansion at the origin of the backscattering transformation in odd dimensions n >= 3 gives rise to a symmetric bilinear operator B-2 on C-0(infinity)(R-n) x C-0(infinity)(R-n).
