Thermal-performance evaluation of bicycle helmets for convective and evaporative heat loss at low and moderate cycling speeds
The main objective of the study was to investigate the thermal performance of five (open and closed) bicycle helmets for convective and evaporative heat transfer using a nine-zone thermal manikin. The shape of the thermal manikin was obtained by averaging the 3D-point coordinates of the head over a sample of 85 head scans of human subjects, obtained through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 3D-
Treatments and Mortality Trends in Cases With and Without Dialysis Who Have an Acute Myocardial Infarction : An 18-Year Nationwide Experience
BACKGROUND: Patients on dialysis who have an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) have an exceedingly poor prognosis, but it is unknown to what extent guideline-recommended interventions and treatments are used and to which benefit. We aimed to assess temporal changes in the use of treatments and survival rates in dialysis patients with an AMI. METHODS AND RESULTS: All consecutive AMI cases from 1996
A Superluminous Supernova in High Surface Density Molecular Gas within the Bar of a Metal-rich Galaxy
We report the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the metal-rich host galaxy of superluminous supernova (SLSN) PTF10tpz, a barred spiral galaxy at z = 0.03994. We find the CO(1-0) emission to be confined within the bar of the galaxy. The distribution and kinematics of molecular gas in the host galaxy resemble gas flows along two lanes running from the tips of the bar towar

Step-wise approach to prevention of chronic diseases in the Danish primary care sector with the use of a personal digital health profile and targeted follow-up- A n assessment of attendance
Background: Current evidence on chronic disease prevention suggests that interventions targeted at high-risk individuals represents the best way forward. We implemented a step-wise approach in the Danish primary care sector, designed for the systematic and targeted prevention of chronic disease. The intervention centered on a personal digital health profile for all participants, followed by target
Infrared monitoring of the adhesion of Catenaria anguillulae zoospores to solid surfaces
Electron microscopic studies of nematodes infected with the chytridiomycetous fungusCatenaria anguillulae indicated that zoospores of the fungus adhered to the cuticle of nematodes by a layer of extracellular polymers. The chemical composition of the adhesive polymers and their interaction with a solid surface were examined with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, using an attenuated total re
Differences in lipid composition between free-living and initially adhered cells of a Gram-negative bacterium
The phospholipid fatty acid composition and poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) content of initially adhered and free-living cells of a Pseudomonas sp. isolated from the rape plant Brassica napus were examined with gas chromatography (GC). Five different adhesion experiments were made including variations in surface charge (hydrophilic and lipophilic), temperature, media composition and time of adhesion.
Recycling of fecal pellets in isopods : Microorganisms and nitrogen compounds as potential food for Oniscus asellus L
The isopod Oniscus asellus was fed wood pieces. The fecal pellets produced during 6 days were reingested twice. Both fresh and ageing pellets were examined for microorganisms and nitrogen compounds including proteins and bacterial cell wall compounds, d-alanine and diaminopimelic acid. In old pellets, the plate counts of fungi decreased but that of bacteria as well as the concentrations of protein
Emergency Department Workload and Crowding During a Major Electronic Health Record Breakdown
Background: Emergency Departments (EDs) today rely heavily on Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and associated support systems. EHR updates are known to be associated with adverse events, but reports on the consequences of breakdowns in EDs are lacking. Objectives: To describe the effects on workload, occupancy, patient Length Of Stay (LOS), and admissions at three EDs (a regional trauma center, a
The effect of the anomeric configuration on the micellization of hexadecylmaltoside surfactants
The self-assembly of the two anomeric forms of n-hexadecyl-D-maltopyranoside (denoted α-C16G2 and β-C16G2) has been studied in dilute aqueous solution by means of surface tension measurements, scattering methods (dynamic light scattering, static light scattering, and small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering) and cryo-transmission electron microscopy at different surfactant concentrations and tempe
A framework to generate domain-specific manycore architectures from dataflow programs
In the last 15 years we have seen, as a response to power and thermal limits for current chip technologies, an explosion in the use of multiple and even many computer cores on a single chip. But now, to further improve performance and energy efficiency, when there are potentially hundreds of computing cores on a chip, we see a need for a specialization of individual cores and the development of he
Combining Nanofocused X-Rays with Electrical Measurements at the NanoMAX Beamline
The advent of nanofocused X-ray beams has allowed the study of single nanocrystals and complete nanoscale devices in a nondestructive manner, using techniques such as scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Further insight into semiconductor devices can be achieved by combining these techniques with simultaneous electrical measurements.
Sintering of binderless cubic boron nitride and its modification by β-Si3N4 additive for hard machining applications
This study present the results of HP-HT sintering, microstructure, properties, and performance of binderless cBN tool material. Within the investigated sintering temperature range of 1900–2600 °C the optimum was found to be 2200–2300 °C. Lower temperature results in incomplete diffusion bonding between cBN grains, while higher temperature results in high degree of recrystallization of initial stru
Effects of cardiovascular pharmacotherapies on incident dementia in patients with atrial fibrillation : A cohort study of all patients above 45 years diagnosed with AF in hospitals in Sweden
Background: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) have an increased dementia risk dementia. We aimed to study the effect of antihypertensive drugs on dementia in AF patients. Methods: Included patients were ≥45 years diagnosed with AF in Swedish National Patient Register (n = 160,251; 89,723 men and 70,528 women) and alive on January 1, 2007. We excluded patients with dementia before onset of AF.
Industrial renewal in the 21st century: evidence from US cities
Industrial renewal in the 21st century: evidence from US cities. Regional Studies. Where and why do new industries emerge? Using revisions of official industrial classifications, this paper documents the appearance of new industries in the US economy between 2000 and 2010 stemming directly from technological advances. Examining differences in new industry creation across cities, this paper shows t
