A Note on Systematic Tailbiting Encoders

Tailbiting codes encoded by convolutional encoders are studied. An explanation is given for the fact that, at low signal-to-noise ratios, a systematic feedback encoder results in fewer decoding bit errors than a nonsystematic feedforward encoder for the same tailbiting code. The analysis is based on a recently introduced code property, namely, the weight density of distance-d codewords. For a give

Interstitial Laser Thermotherapy of Liver Tumours. Methodology and Application

Interstitiell laser termoterapi (ILT) med Nd:YAG laser är en ny behandlingsform, som ger de tekniska föInterstitial laser thermotherapy (ILT) is a method well suited for selective local destruction of malignant tumours. In the present work, a laser thermotherapy system based on feedback temperature control of energy delivery (through computerised feedback system) was developed. Temperature control was excellent in experiments without carbonization and with preserved light penetration, whereas tempe

Fast, narrow-band computer model for radiation calculations

A fast, narrow-band computer model, FASTNB, which predicts the radiation intensity in a general nonisothermal and nonhomogeneous combustion environment, has been developed. The spectral absorption coefficients of the combustion products, including carbon dioxide, water vapor, and soot, are calculated based on the narrow-band model. FASTNB provides an accurate calculation at reasonably high speed.

A 5-year follow-up study on the incidence of retinopathy in type 1 diabetes mellitus in relation to medical risk indicators

OBJECTIVES. The aim of the present study was to describe the 5-year incidence of retinopathy in type 1 diabetes mellitus and to characterize risk indicators for the development and progression of retinopathy. DESIGN. A cross-sectional study of type 1 diabetic patients taken care of at a medical department. SETTING. All type 1 diabetic patients attending the Department of Internal Medicine, Univers

On the “vulnerability” of syntactic domains in Swedish and German

This paper investigates the L2 acquisition of clausal syntax in post-puberty learners of German and Swedish regarding V2, VP headedness and verb particle constructions. The learner data are tested against L2 theories according to which lower structural projections (VP) are acquired before higher functional projections (IP, CP), VP syntax is unproblematic (invulnerable), but where grammatical opera

The concept of proximity has its origins at the beginning of the years ’90 in France with the studies from the Group of the Dynamics of the Proximity. The importance of the territorial proximity for the development is considered basically through studies centred in the analysis of industrial dynamic and innovative environments. Its relationship with the local development in poor rural areas has be

Relations between blood flow and mucociliary activity in the rabbit maxillary sinus

The effects of two sympathomimetic drugs on mucociliary activity and mucosal blood flow in the rabbit maxillary sinus were investigated by using a photo-electric technique (mucociliary activity) and laser Doppler flowmetry (blood flow). The responses produced were compared with effects of ligation of the external carotid artery. The alpha 1-agonist phenylpropanolamine (0.1-100 micrograms/kg) had n

Isotope shifts and accurate wavelengths in NeII and NeIII

Transition isotope shifts of 3s-3p transitions in Ne II and Ne III are measured in Fourier transform spectra from a hollow-cathode source. Accurate absolute line-center positions of the Ne-20 isotope are derived for the purpose of tertiary wavelength standards in the region 2000-5000 angstrom. A robust statistical treatment is applied, yielding line-position uncertainties that are lower than for t

Sustainable energy use in houses : will the energy use increase with time? : study of literature and computer estimations

Abstract in UndeterminedThis report is a study of literature found in the field of energy use in single-family houses. It is to be regarded as a first phase, part of the project "Sustainable energy use in houses". The literature examined refers to, predominantly, Swedish conditions, including Swedish building technique and the Nordic climate. The objectives of the report are to present topics of i

Numerical modelling of fracture initiation in large steel specimens at impact

Dynamic mode I fracture initiation in impact loaded single edge bend specimens with a quarter notch is investigated by numerical modelling and the results are compared with sets of experimental data from two different steel qualities. The finite element analysis include 2D (two-dimensional) plane strain, 2D plane stress and 3D models. No crack growth is included in the calculations. The impact vel

Contrast sensitivity and visual recovery time in diabetic patients treated with panretinal photocoagulation

PURPOSE: To study patients treated with panretinal photocoagulation regarding contrast sensitivity and visual recovery time after exposure to glare. METHODS: To compare contrast sensitivity and visual recovery-time after exposure to glare in eyes (n=20) from 20 type 1 diabetic patients treated with panretinal photocoagulation for proliferative retinopathy with eyes (n= 19) from 19 un-treated type

Evaluation of a modified interview version and of a self-rating version of the Suicide Assessment Scale.

The Suicide Assessment Scale (SUAS) was constructed to be sensitive to change of suicidality. It was recently found to be predictive of suicide in a group of suicide attempters. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of a modified interview version of SUAS with defined scores and also a new self-rating version (SUAS-S). The subjects consisted of former inpatients
