Cryo-EM structure supports a role of AQP7 as a junction protein

Aquaglyceroporin 7 (AQP7) facilitates glycerol flux across the plasma membrane with a critical physiological role linked to metabolism, obesity, and associated diseases. Here, we present the single-particle cryo-EM structure of AQP7 determined at 2.55 Å resolution adopting two adhering tetramers, stabilized by extracellularly exposed loops, in a configuration like that of the well-characterized in

Charge and zeta-potential distribution in starch modified with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) determined using electrical asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (EAF4)

Starch modified with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) is extensively used due to its emulsifying capacity. Modification with OSA renders the starch surface active but also anionic at intermediate pH. The amount of OSA that is grafted to the starch polymer backbone will influence the functionality. Likewise, it can be expected that the distribution of the substituents over the molar mass distributi

A Screening Tool to Quickly Identify Movement Disorders in Patients with Inborn Errors of Metabolism

BACKGROUND: Movement disorders are frequent in patients with inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) but poorly recognized, particularly by nonmovement disorder specialists. We propose an easy-to-use clinical screening tool to help recognize movement disorders.OBJECTIVE: The aim is to develop a user-friendly rapid screening tool for nonmovement disorder specialists to detect moderate and severe movemen

Planning for human diversity : design patterns of Universal Design

Ensuring the conditions for an inclusive society in the face of humandiversity places various demands on the built environment. Planning isessential for accommodating a wide range of individual preferences andabilities. This article examines the presence and absence of Universal Design (UD)in contemporary urban planning and construction in eight new or remodelledSwedish building and public space pr

Novel methodology for the evaluation of symptoms reported by patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation : Application of natural language processing to electronic medical records data

Introduction: Understanding symptom patterns in atrial fibrillation (AF) can help in disease management. We report on the application of natural language processing (NLP) to electronic medical records (EMRs) to capture symptom reports in patients with newly diagnosed (incident) AF. Methods and Results: This observational retrospective study included adult patients with an index diagnosis of incide

Type 2 diabetes candidate genes, including PAX5, cause impaired insulin secretion in human pancreatic islets

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is caused by insufficient insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells. To identify candidates contributing to T2D pathophysiology, we studied human pancreatic islets from ~300 individuals. We found 395 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in islets from individuals with T2D, including, to our knowledge, novel (OPRD1, PAX5, TET1) and previously identified (CHL1, GLRA1, IAPP) ca
