Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and offspring cardiac structure and function in adolescence

Background-Fetal exposure to preeclampsia is associated with higher blood pressure and later risk of stroke. We aimed to investigate the associations of maternal preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, and maternal blood pressure change in pregnancy with offspring cardiac structure and function in adolescence. Methods and Results-Using data from a prospective birth cohort study, we included offspr

Protection of pulmonary graft from thrombosis in donation after cardiac death : Effect of warm ischaemia versus cold ischaemia

OBJECTIVES The use of donation after cardiac death (DCD) to overcome organ shortage is slowly moving into the clinic. In this study, we compare the protective effect of warm ischaemia versus cold ischaemia on thrombotic formation in non-heparinized pulmonary grafts. METHODS Twelve Landrace pigs were randomized into two groups: warm ischaemia and cold ischaemia. Ventricular fibrillation without the

Trump's unexpected and astounding victory in US presidential elections on 8 November 2016 was as much a rejection of the ruling establishment, political elitism and certain forces of globalization as an endorsement of some of his populist-nationalist slogans that promised the restoration of a secure and glorious past.

The European Board of Anaesthesiology recommendations for safe medication practice : First update

These European Board of Anaesthesiology (EBA) recommendations for safe medication practice replace the first edition of the EBA recommendations published in 2011. They were updated because evidence from critical incident reporting systems continues to show that medication errors remain a major safety issue in anaesthesia, intensive care, emergency medicine and pain medicine, and there is an ongoin

Continuous flow microfluidic separation and processing of rare cells and bioparticles found in blood – A review

Rare cells in blood, such as circulating tumor cells or fetal cells in the maternal circulation, posses a great prognostic or diagnostic value, or for the development of personalized medicine, where the study of rare cells could provide information to more specifically targeted treatments. When conventional cell separation methods, such as flow cytometry or magnetic activated cell sorting, have fa

The SAGA so far : Reading the history of the Galaxy with asteroseismology

Asteroseismology has the capability of delivering stellar properties which would otherwise be inaccessible, such as radii, masses and thus ages of stars. When this information is coupled with classical determinations of stellar parameters, such as metallicities, effective temperatures and angular diameters, powerful new diagnostics for stellar and Galactic studies can be obtained. The ongoing Strö

Influence of beliefs about health and illness on self-care and care-seeking in foreign-born people with diabetic foot ulcers : Dissimilarities related to origin

Objective: To describe beliefs about health and illness among foreign-born people with diabetic foot ulcers that might affect selfreported self-care and health-care seeking and to study whether there are dissimilarities related to origin. Method: Qualitative descriptive study. Semi-structured interviews with people aged 38-86 years; 13 born in European and 13 in non-European countries (all except

Iridophore- and Xanthophore-Deficient Melanistic Color Variant of the Lizard Plestiodon latiscutatus

Elucidating the ultimate and proximate mechanisms of melanistic color pattern formation has become an important focus of evolutionary biology. There are relatively few studies, however, examining the composition and architecture of pigment cells in melanistic reptiles. The typical color pattern of the skink Plestiodon latiscutatus, which inhabits the Izu Islands and Izu Peninsula of Japan, consist

A Publicly Owned Media Company Co-Producing Audiovisual Content? : The case of Film Väst - Invited Keynote Talk

By the late 1960s, the largest Scandinavian film companies had all closed their sound stages and markedly lowered their annual ambitions with regard to production. This may be seen as a response to several different phenomena. First, television, a medium that was introduced in the region from the mid-1950s on, meant that films lost their habitual audience. Second, the introduction of film support

Crystallization and preliminary structural analysis of the Listeria monocytogenes Ca(2+)-ATPase LMCA1

Ca(2+)-ATPases are ATP-driven membrane pumps that are responsible for the transport of Ca(2+) ions across the membrane. The Listeria monocytogenes Ca(2+)-ATPase LMCA1 has been crystallized in the Ca(2+)-free state stabilized by AlF(4)(-), representing an occluded E2-P(i)-like state. The crystals belonged to space group P2(1)2(1)2 and a complete data set extending to 4.3 Å resolution was collected.

Low Preoperative BMD Is Related to High Migration of Tibia Components in Uncemented TKA-92 Patients in a Combined DEXA and RSA Study With 2-Year Follow-Up

Background: The fixation of uncemented tibia components in total knee arthroplasty may rely on the bone quality of the tibia; however, no previous studies have shown convincing objective proof of this. Component migration is relevant as it has been shown to predict aseptic loosening. Methods: We performed 2-year follow-up of 92 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty surgery with an uncemen
