Ventilated Trombe wall as a passive solar heating and cooling retrofitting approach; a low-tech design for off-grid settlements in semi-arid climates

In the coming years, it is anticipated that if we continue with the same pace of energy consumption, communities will continue to face three major challenges; a mounting increase in energy demands, pollution, and global warming. On a local scale, Egypt is experiencing one of its most serious energy crises in decades. The energy consumed in indoor cooling and heating is the biggest portion of total

Production of pions, kaons and protons in pp collisions at root s=900 GeV with ALICE at the LHC

The production of pi(+), pi(-), K+, K-, p, and (p) over bar at mid-rapidity has been measured in proton-proton collisions at root s = 900 GeV with the ALICE detector. Particle identification is performed using the specific energy loss in the inner tracking silicon detector and the time projection chamber. In addition, time-of-flight information is used to identify hadrons at higher momenta. Finall

Tyrosine kinase inhibition in renal cell carcinoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumours: case reports

Background: Sunitinib malate is approved multinationally for the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) and advanced imatinib-refractory gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST). Greater exposure to sunitinib is associated with improved efficacy. Therefore, minimising the impact of adverse events (AEs) on patient quality of life is important to enable patients to achieve optimal exposur

Organizing disciplinary power in a knowledge organization

This article provides a systematic attempt to analyze the effects of performance appraisals, here conceptualized as tools for executing disciplinary power, and how the agency of employees is shaped. The article demonstrates how agency is enrolled by a broad set of disciplinary technologies aimed at behavior as well as the self, orchestrated in way that effectively short-circuits resistance. Can a Chiral System Be Built on a Strongly Asymmetric Nucleon Configuration?

The multi-particle-plus-triaxial-rotor (MPR) model calculations were performed for several nuclei in the 100, 130 and 190 mass regions. It was found that chiral geometry can form even for very asymmetric nucleon configurations. However, the near-degeneracy of the partner bands may not be as good as the one observed for symmetric or slightly asymmetric configurations. DOI:10.5506/APhysPolB.44.341

Geostatistical approach for statistical description of uplift pressures: Part II

The possibilities of using structural reliability analysis in concrete dam design and assessment is investigated in Sweden. For such analysis statistical descriptions of the loads and resistances are necessary. Uplift pressure has a large impact on the safety and is difficult to quantify. In ‘Geostatistical approach for statistical description of uplift pressures: Part 1’*, the methodology of a ge

The COMT val158met polymorphism is associated with prevalent fractures in Swedish men

INTRODUCTION: Sex steroids are important for growth and maintenance of the skeleton. Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is an estrogen degrading enzyme. The COMT val158met polymorphism results in a 60-75% difference in enzyme activity between the val (high activity=H) and met (low activity=L) variants. We have previously reported that this polymorphism is associated with bone mineral density (BMD

Increasing gene dosage greatly enhances recombinant expression of aquaporins in Pichia pastoris

Background: When performing functional and structural studies, large quantities of pure protein are desired. Most membrane proteins are however not abundantly expressed in their native tissues, which in general rules out purification from natural sources. Heterologous expression, especially of eukaryotic membrane proteins, has also proven to be challenging. The development of expression systems in

Friends and Symptom Dimensions in Patients with Psychosis: A Pooled Analysis

Background: Having friends is associated with more favourable clinical outcomes and a higher quality of life in mental disorders. Patients with schizophrenia have fewer friends than other mentally ill patients. No large scale studies have evaluated so far what symptom dimensions of schizophrenia are associated with the lack of friendships. Methods: Data from four multi-centre studies on outpatient

The impact of patient heterogeneity and socioeconomic factors on abatacept retention in rheumatoid arthritis across nine European countries.

There are substantial differences in accessibility to biological disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) across countries. The objective of this study was to analyse the impact of patient demographics, disease characteristics and gross domestic product (GDP) on abatacept (ABA) retention in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated in clinical practice.

Severe lung lesions caused by Salmonella are prevented by inhibition of the contact system

Vascular damage induced by trauma, inflammation, or infection results in an alteration of the endothelium from a nonactivated to a procoagulant, vasoconstrictive, and proinflammatory state, and can lead to life-threatening complications. Here we report that activation of the contact system by Salmonella leads to massive infiltration of red blood cells and fibrin deposition in the lungs of infected

Statistical evaluation of cell kinetic data from DNA flow cytometry (FCM) by the EM algorithm

Flow cytometric DNA measurements yield the amount of DNA for each of a large number of cells. A DNA histogram normally consists of a mixture of one or more constellations of G0/G1-, S-, G2/M-phase cells, together with internal standards, debris, background noise, and one or more populations of clumped cells. We have modelled typical DNA histograms as a mixed distribution with Gaussian densities fo

Prostate specific antigen and human glandular kallikrein 2 in early detection of prostate cancer

Purpose: Several tumor markers have recently been applied for prostate cancer screening. We analyze the effectiveness of prostate specific antigen (PSA), age specific PSA, PSA velocity, volume adjusted PSA densities, change in PSA level following antibacterial therapy, free-to-total PSA ratio, alpha1-antichymotrypsin bound PSA, alpha2-macroglobulin bound PSA, alpha1-protease inhibitor bound PSA an

Development of Zonal Models for Analysis of Engine Knock

Autoignition in SI engines is an abnormal combustion mode and may lead to engine knock which is an undesired phenomenon in SI engines. It may cause damage and it is a source of noise in engines. Knock limits the compression ratio of the engine and a low compression ratio means low fuel conversion efficiency of the engine. This thesis presents a theoretical investigation about the modeling of the e
