A small molecule alpha(4)beta(1) antagonist prevents development of murine Lyme arthritis without affecting protective immunity
After infection with Borrelia burgdorferi, humans and mice under certain conditions develop arthritis. Initiation of inflammation is dependent on the migration of innate immune cells to the site of infection, controlled by interactions of a variety of adhesion molecules. In this study, we used the newly synthesized compound S18407, which is a prodrug of the active drug S16197, to analyze the funct

A higher order scheme for two-dimensional quasi-static crack growth simulations
An efficient scheme for the simulation of quasi-static crack growth in two-dimensional linearly elastic isotropic specimens is presented. The crack growth is simulated in a stepwise manner where an extension to the already existing crack is added in each step. In a local coordinate system each such extension is represented as a polynomial of some, user specified, degree, n. The coefficients of the
MRNA expression and localization of bNOS, eNOS and iNOS in human cervix at preterm and term labour
Background: Preterm birth is the primary cause of the neonatal mortality and morbidity. There will be no preterm birth without a cervical softening. Nitric oxide ( NO) is shown to be a mediator of term cervical ripening. The aim of this study was to investigate mRNA expression of the three isomers of NO synthases ( NOS) and to identify them by immunohistochemistry in the human cervix at preterm bi
Essays on Trade, Growth and Exchange Rates
In the first chapter we test if Purchasing Power Parity, PPP, is empirically valid and when that is not the case we test if productivity growth differences can account for the deviations from PPP by co-integration analysis. Interestingly, the results lend support in favour of PPP in several cases and when PPP is rejected GDP per capita growth rate differences seem to explain the long-run deviation

Persistent spectral hole burning from oxygen-evolving Photosystem II cores from cyanobacteria and higher plants
Persistent spectral hole burning was performed on active Photosystem II (PSII) cores from spinach and Synechocystis 6803, each containing about 32 chl a molecules per core. Hole-burning action spectra are presented. The data appear inconsistent with a mechanism involving non-photochemical hole burning, as has previously been observed in isolated PSII protein-pigment fragments. A photochemical hole
Managing pain in older persons who receive home-help for their daily living. Perceptions by older persons and care providers
Pain is a common problem for older persons who need professional help for their daily living. In this study 94 older persons (75+) in persistent pain were compared with 52 care providers concerning the pain management methods they had used/administered during the previous week and how helpful they perceived these methods to be. interviews were based on 16 items from the original version of the pai

Classification of traveling waves for a class of nonlinear wave equations
We classify the weak traveling wave solutions for a class of one-dimensional non-linear shallow water wave models. The equations are shown to admit smooth, peaked, and cusped solutions, as well as more exotic waves such as stumpons and composite waves. We also explain how some previously studied traveling wave solutions of the models fit into this classification.

Novel azapeptide inhibitors of cathepsins B and K. Structural background to increased specificity for cathepsin B
We have designed and synthesized a new series of azapeptides which act as potential inhibitors of cathepsin B and/or cathepsin K. Their structures are based upon the inhibitory sites of natural cysteine protease inhibitors, cystatins. For the synthesized azapeptides, the equilibrium constants for dissociation of inhibitor-enzyme complex, K-i, were determined. Comparison of these values indicated t
A new nested polymerase chain reaction method very efficient in detecting Plasmodium and Haemoproteus infections from avian blood
Recently, several polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methods for detection and genetic identification of haemosporidian parasites in avian blood have been developed. Most of these have considerably higher sensitivity compared with traditional microscope-based examinations of blood smears. These new methods have already had a strong impact on several aspects of research on avian blood parasites.

Structural and photoluminescence properties of excited state intramolecular proton transfer capable compounds - Potential emissive and electron transport materials
Electronic factors influencing the photoluminescence properties and rates of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction of o-hydroxy derivatives of 2,5-diphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole have been studied. The potential of these molecules as emissive and electron transport materials in designing improved organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) has been studied by analyzing possible reasons
Rotating quantum liquids crystallize
Small crystallites form when finite quantal systems are set highly rotating. This crystallization is independent of the statistics of the particles, and occurs for both trapped bosons and fermions. The spin degree of freedom does not change the tendency for localization. In a highly rotating state, the strongly correlated bosonic and fermionic systems approach to that of classical particles.
Connecting Social Science and Information Technology : Democratic Privacy in the Information Age
First, we will develop a generic framework which, properly used, can drastically reduce the intrinsic complexity of the continually evolving IT-environment, making it less unwieldy. That should prove advantageous for anyone trying to analyse social aspects of the moving target that is classified as "IT". Using (and at the same time demonstrating) his framework, w
