Spatial Frequency Sensitivity Differences between Adults of Good and Poor Reading Ability

purpose. To determine whether normal adults of good and poor reading ability exhibit different patterns of sensitivity to spatial frequency, as previously found between dyslexic and nondyslexic control subjects. methods. The visual acuity, spatial frequency sensitivity, and reading ability of 96 normal, nondyslexic adults was assessed. Participants were ranked according to reading ability. The to

Assessment of Long-Term Losses in Prestressed Concrete Structures - Application for Nuclear Reactor Containments

Most nuclear reactors, both in Sweden and worldwide, are enclosed by a prestressed concrete containment. The main purpose of the containment is to prevent any radioactive discharge to the environment in the event of a major internal accident. The performance and structural integrity of the containment depends on the compressive stresses induced in the concrete by the prestressing system. However,

Large acoustic transients induced by non-thermal melting of InSb

We have observed large-amplitude strain waves following a rapid change in density of InSb due to nonthermal melting. The strain has been measured in real time via time-resolved x-ray diffraction, with a temporal resolution better than 2 ps. The change from the solid to liquid density of the surface layer launches a high-amplitude strain wave into the crystalline material below. This induces an eff

Diameter-dependent growth rate of InAs nanowires

We have grown Au seeded InAs nanowires using chemical beam epitaxy and report on the growth rate dependence on nanowire diameter. We find a maximum of the growth rate at a nanowire diameter of 25 nm, below which the growth rate decreases due to the Gibbs-Thomson effect. Above the maximum, the growth rate decreases with increasing diameter due to the effect of material diffusion to the growth point
