Concomitant Ro/SSA and La/SSB antibodies are biomarkers for the risk of venous thromboembolism and cerebral infarction in primary Sjögren's syndrome

OBJECTIVES: To assess the risk of incident cardiovascular disease in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome, overall and stratified by Ro/SSA and La/SSB autoantibody status.METHODS: A cohort of patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome in Sweden (n=960) and matched controls from the general population (n=9,035) were included, and data extracted from the National Patient Register to identify event

Burden of responsibility experienced by family caregivers of elderly dementia sufferers : Analyses of strain, feelings and coping strategies

Eight family caregivers of elderly dementia sufferers participated in in-depth interviews regarding their experiences of giving care. They were selected according to strain, isolation, disappointment and emotional involvement, measured on a 'caregiver burden' scale. Structural analyses of the interviews identified six categories reflecting the feelings and experiences of the caregivers. The first

Follow-up after curative surgery for colorectal carcinoma - Randomized comparison with no follow-up

PURPOSE: This study investigated the value of intense follow-up compared with no follow-up after curative surgery of cancer in the colon or rectum. METHODS: One hundred seven patients were randomized to no follow-up (control group; n=54) or intense follow-up (follow-up group; n=53) after surgery and early postoperative colonoscopy. Patients in the follow-up group were followed at frequent interval

Archeovirtual 2011 : An evaluation approach to virtual museums

November 2011 saw the opening of the exhibition "Archeovirtual" organized by CNR ITABC - Virtual Heritage Lab - and V-MusT Network of Excellence, in Paestum, Italy, under the general direction of BMTA1. The event, that was part of a wider European project focus on virtual museums, turned to be a great opportunity to show many different projects, applications and installations about Virtual Reality

Amphetamine induces excess release of striatal acetylcholine in vivo that is independent of nigrostriatal dopamine

The effect of amphetamine on striatal acetylcholine (ACh) release was studied by an in vivo intrastriatal microdialysis technique. Although we expected systemic amphetamine to inhibit baseline striatal ACh release, the opposite was found. In addition, we found that the amphetamine-induced striatal ACh release did not depend on nigrostriatal DA since 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesions had no effect

Genetic determinants of growth hormone and GH-related phenotypes

BACKGROUND: Higher fasting Growth Hormone (GH) has been associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Our objective was to find genetic determinants of fasting GH in order to facilitate future efforts of analyzing the association between fasting growth hormone and cardiovascular disease. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed in a discovery cohort of 4134 persons

Pepsin‐catalyzed peptide synthesis in organic media : studies with free and immobilized enzyme

Pepsin‐catalyzed synthesis of protected peptides was studied in two‐phase systems containing up to 50% (by volume) of aqueous phase. A methodological study was carried out to determine the optimum conditions for the synthesis of the model protected peptide Z‐Phe‐Phe‐OMe. Several parameters such as concentrations of carboxylic and amino components, pH of the aqueous phase, ratio of organic to aqueo

Phase behaviour of aqueous systems of enzymatically modified phosphatidylcholines with one hexadecyl and one hexyl or octyl chain

Phosphatidylcholines composed of a hexadecyl chain in the 2-position and a hexyl or octyl chain in the l-position (C6C16PC or C8C16PC) were prepared from dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine by lipase-catalyzed transesterification; the aqueous phase properties of the products were examined. In the C8C16PC-water system, a lamellar liquid-crystalline phase was dominant. Like all long-chain phosphatidylcho

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis in Southern Sweden. Long-term results after nailing/pinning

One hundred seventy-two patients with 204 slipped capital femoral epiphyses treated with nailing or pinning were evaluated an average of 28 years after surgery. Follow-up evaluation was obtained by questionnaire in 153 cases (181 hips) and by clinical and radiographic reexamination in 132 cases (157 hips). Segmental collapse was seen in four of 179 hips nailed/pinned in situ and in four of 25 hips
