Simulation of the effect of a reinforcement fibre on network mechanics
Computer simulations were used to study the effect of a single reinforcement fiber added to a mechanical fibre network. The stresses of the surrounding fibers and inter-fiber bonds increased proportionally to the logarithm of the elastic stiffness of the reinforcement fibre. In the case of fiber failure the breaking stress of the model system increased only little and breaking strain decreased lit
Selective Generation of Gut Tropic T Cells in Gut-associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT): Requirement for GALT Dendritic Cells and Adjuvant.
n the current study, we address the underlying mechanism for the selective generation of gut-homing T cells in the gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALT). We demonstrate that DCs in the GALT are unique in their capacity to establish T cell gut tropism but in vivo only confer this property to T cells in the presence of DC maturational stimuli, including toll-like receptor-dependent and -independent
Evolution of chloroplast mononucleotide microsatellites in Arabidopsis thaliana
The level of variation and the mutation rate were investigated in an empirical study of 244 chloroplast microsatellites in 15 accessions of Arabidopsis thaliana. In contrast to SNP variation, microsatellite variation in the chloroplast was found to be common, although less common than microsatellite variation in the nucleus. No microsatellite variation was found in coding regions of the chloroplas
Is victimization from bullying associated with medicine use among adolescents? A nationally representative cross-sectional survey in Denmark
OBJECTIVE. The goal was to examine whether being a victim of bullying was associated with medicine use, taking into account the increased prevalence of physical and psychological symptoms. METHODS. The study population included all students in grades 5, 7, and 9 (mean ages: 11.6, 13.6, and 15.6 years, respectively) in a random sample of schools in Denmark (participation rate: 88.5%; N = 5205). Mechanisms of salt frost scaling on portland cement-bound materials: studies and hypothesis
A hypothesis regarding the mechanism causing salt frost scaling on Portland cement-bound materials is described. It is assumed that deterioration is due to osmotic micro ice body growth, as has been previously proposed for frost deterioration of moisture-isolated specimens of cement-bound materials. In moisture-isolated specimens, this ice body growth stops when the micro structure is drained to a

Eager Evaluation Considered Harmful
In real-time systems potentially unbounded loops and lazy (late) evaluation are often avoided in order to improve predictability. This paper will show that a commonly suggested way to implement semaphores can lead to unnecessary blocking of high-priority tasks. It also presents a scheme with lazy evaluation and (potentially) unbounded loops that gives less blocking of high-priority tasks.
Guidelines and reported practice for the treatment of hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia
OBJECTIVE: To monitor changes in family physicians' reported practice on hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia. DESIGN: Random samples of physicians were selected for telephone interviews on their practice regarding cut-off levels and pharmacological treatment of hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia, related to a case scenario of a 48-year-old man, in 1989, 1991 and 1993. SETTING: Primary care
The dorsal vagal complex as a site for cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript peptide to suppress gastric emptying.
Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript-derived peptides (CARTp) and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) alter feeding and gastrointestinal function after central administration, and the gastric inhibitory effects are mediated through CRF. We hypothesized that dorsal hindbrain effects of CARTp on gastric emptying are mediated by the vagus nerve and that the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) is a s
Appropriate prophylaxis with restrictive palivizumab regimen in preterm children in Sweden
Aim: Palivizumab (Synagis(R)(R)) was registered in Sweden in 1999 for prophylaxis against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in premature infants. The high costs and the limited knowledge of the efficacy of this substance have led to debate about how and when it should be used. National guidelines for the use of palivizumab in Sweden were constructed in the year 2000. The aim of this study was to e
Application of information technology to decision support in treatment plant operation
This paper reviews decision support methodologies that can be applied to treatment plants. Case studies of decision support systems (DSS) that have been developed and used or trialled are presented below. These include rule-based systems and systems based on digraphs of cause-and-effect relationships. Detection examples on real plant data are presented, in one case using direct measurements and si
Measuring Personnel through Human Resources Accounting Reports: A Procedure for Management of Learning. The Hospital Sector in Northwest Stockholm
In the beginning of 1990s preparations were underway in Sweden to enact a law aimed at making accounting on personnel in the annual reports compulsory. An official investigation resulted in a special report on how to design and report on it. The expectations and the discussions that followed resulted in considerable voluntary implementation of “personnel economics reports” or “human resources acco
Dissociative NH3 adsorption on the Si(100)2 × 1 surface at 300 K
High resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy has been used to determine how NH3 adsorbs on the Si(100)2 × 1 surface at 300 K. We find that the NH3 molecules dissociate into NH2 and H on adsorption. Combination bands, overtones and double losses for the Si---NH2 group are observed. An anneal to 800 K is sufficient to dissociate the adsorbed NH2 groups while the majority of the Si---H bonds rem
Ännu icke godkänt. Lärares sätt att erfara betygssystemet och dess tillämpning i yrkesutövningen.
Popular Abstract in Swedish Ett nytt betygssystem infördes i grundskolan i Sverige 1995. I denna studie undersöks lärares sätt att erfara betygssystemet och dess tiThis thesis reports results from a study that focuses on how teachers experience the criterion-referenced grading system and how they say they use it in their professional work. The empirical study was carried out as semi-structured audiotaped interviews with thirty qualified teachers, in the subjects English, Maths and Swedish. The outcome of the qualitative analysis consists of four parts. In th
Cobalt-mediated solid phase synthesis of 3-O-alkynylbenzyl galactosides and their evaluation as galectin inhibitors
Methyl beta-D-galactoside was converted to the corresponding 3,4-O-stannylene acetal, which was selectively benzylated with 3-iodobenzyl bromide and coupled to a polymer-bound propargylic ether via a Sonogashira reaction. The polymer-bound carbohydrate substrate was cleaved from the resin with different carbon nucleophiles in a cobalt-mediated Nicholas reaction. The product 3-O-alkynylbenzyl galac

To Own the Phone : Spatial Diffusion, Ownership and Regulation of Telephone Service in Argentina, 1878-1990
Telephone service in Argentina has since its beginning been characterized as one of the most developed in South America. Regarding its development, two distinct periods can be identified. An initial period of private ownership extended from 1878 to 1946. In 1946, when the largest telephone company was bought by the state, a period of predominant state-ownership began that lasted until 1990 when th
