Extra-pair fertilizations in the Sedge Warbler

Parentage of 201 young (from 44 broods) in a population of Sedge Warblers Acrocephalus schoenobaenus in South Central Sweden, 1990-1992, was determined by using multilocus DNA fingerprinting. The frequency of extra-pair young (EPY) was 7.5% and they occurred in 23% of the broods. For 11 out of 15 extra-pair young we could identify the true father; in all of the cases he was a close neighbour. Amon

Studies of arginine-arene interactions through synthesis and evaluation of a series of galectin-binding aromatic lactose esters

Aromatic lactose 2-O-esters were synthesized and used to probe arene-arginine interactions with the galectin family of proteins. They were found to be low mu m inhibitors of galectin-1, -3, and -9N-terminal domain and moderate inhibitors of galectin-7, but not inhibitors of galectin-8N-terminal, which locks an arginine residue close to the critical, esterified lactose 2-O-position. Molecular model

A study of propane ammoxidation on Mo-V-Nb-Te-oxide catalysts diluted with Al2O3, SiO2, and TiO2

Mo-V-Nb-Te-oxide catalysts with nominal metal compositions equal to those of M1, M2, and a mixture of the M1 and M2 phases were prepared in neat and sol-diluted forms. The latter catalysts were prepared with 30 wt% of Al2O3, SiO2, or TiO2 sol. All catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD, and TPR and tested for the respective ammoxidation of propane and propene. XRD showed that dilution with SiO2

Incidental meniscal findings on knee MRI in middle-aged and elderly persons

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the knee is often performed in patients who have knee symptoms of unclear cause. When meniscal tears are found, it is commonly assumed that the symptoms are attributable to them. However, there is a paucity of data regarding the prevalence of meniscal damage in the general population and the association of meniscal tears with knee symptoms and with r

Profile of hydrolases and biogas production during two-stage mesophilic anaerobic digestion of solid potato waste

Two two-stage systems, one consisting of a solid-bed reactor for hydrolysis/acidification connected to an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket methanogenic reactor, and the other consisting of a solid-bed reactor connected to a methanogenic reactor packed with wheat straw biofilm carriers, were investigated with regard to hydrolytic enzymes and methane production during mesophilic anaerobic digestion o

The relative importance of lethal and non-lethal effects of fish on insect colonisation of ponds

1. We hypothesised that adult insects actively monitor potential habitats for the presence of fish by means of chemical cues and avoid sites that pose significant risks. This was examined by quantifying colonisation of insects in outdoor pools with no fish (controls), fish (direct predation effect) or caged fish (chemical predator cues). 2. A significant direct effect of predation was found, but n

Effects of metsulfuron methyl and cypermethrin exposure on freshwater model ecosystems

The aim of this study was to investigate the short-term (2 weeks) effects of the herbicide metsulfuron methyl alone and in combination with the insecticide cypermethrin in freshwater enclosures (80 1). We used a factorial design with four levels of herbicide (0, 1, 5, 20 mug/1) and two levels of insecticide (0 and 0.05 mug/1). The root growth of the macrophyte species Elodea canadensis and Myrioph

Amorphous drug nanosuspensions. 3. Particle dissolution and crystal growth

In the present paper, we have studied particle dissolution and crystal growth of the poorly water soluble drug felodipine, using fluorescence as a probe for the amount of crystalline material. Dissolution kinetics is essentially diffusion-controlled, while the rate of crystal growth is significantly slower compared to the diffusion-controlled limit. The deviation from diffusion control was charact

Minor components with smooth muscle relaxing properties from scented myrrh (Commiphora guidotti)

All sesquiterpenes present in a sample of scented myrrh were isolated and characterised. Seven compounds, with cadinane, guaiane, oplopane, and eudesmane skeletons, were obtained, of which two are new and two are reported from a natural source for the first time. The major component, T-cadinol, has previously been shown to possess smooth muscle-relaxing properties, and the major purpose of the inv

The effect of dextran 40 and Dazmegrel on early platelet deposition onto vascular grafts

Platelet deposition onto double velour Dacron (n = 14) and double velour Dacron with internal collagen (n = 14) interposition grafts were examined experimentally. The accumulation was assessed by reinfusion of 111In labelled platelets and imaging with a scintillation camera. One group received Dextran-40 intravenously (n = 14) and one group received Dazmegrel (n = 14) intravenously. No graft occlu

Temperature gradients and heat flux measurements in hot pressing of paper

Impulse drying was simulated with a platen press equipped with a heated pressing head. The heat transferred to the wet paper sheet and the temperature gradient achieved in the thickness direction of the sheet during the press pulse were measured. The influence of the basis weight, the applied pressure, and the hot surface temperature on the temperature gradient and the total amount of heat transfe

Influence of CrgA on assembly of the cell division protein FtsZ during development of Streptomyces coelicolor

The product of the crgA gene of Streptomyces coelicolor represents a novel family of small proteins. A single orthologous gene is located close to the origin of replication of all fully sequenced actinomycete genomes and borders a conserved gene cluster implicated in cell growth and division. In S. coelicolor, CrgA is important for coordinating growth and cell division in sporogenic hyphae. In thi

Physical capacity in women with primary Sjögren's syndrome: a controlled study.

Objective To examine physical capacity (aerobic capacity, joint mobility, muscle function, and standing balance) in women with primary Sjögren's syndrome (primary SS) and to examine the correlation of aerobic capacity with fatigue, functional disability, and mental aspects (anxiety and depression). Methods Fifty-one women who fulfilled the European Community criteria for primary SS and who had an

Aggregate morphology and flow behaviour of micellar alkylglycoside solutions

Solutions of n-nonyl-beta-D-glucoside (C(9)G(1)), n-decyl-beta-D-glucoside (C(10)G(1)), n-dodecyl-beta-D-maltoside (C(12)G(2)) n-tetradecyl-beta-D-maltoside (C(14)G(2)) and C(9)G(1)/C(10)G(1) mixtures have been characterised by capillary viscometry and rheology in H2O and D2O, in order to map the influence of surfactant characteristics on micellisation over a wide concentration range. For the malt

The genetic basis of naturally occurring pollen color dimorphisms in Nigella degenii (Ranunculaceae)

Nigella degenii ssp. barbro and ssp. jenny differ from related taxa in being dimorphic for pollen color, with some plants having dark pollen and others light pollen. In this study we performed experimental crosses to determine whether the difference in pollen color is governed by few or many loci and whether the two subspecies utilize the same gene to control pollen color. Patterns of segregation

Changes in polyamine metabolism during glucocorticoid-induced programmed cell death in mouse thymus

When mice are injected with dexamethasone, cortical thymocytes are deleted through programmed cell death (PCD). We have used this in vivo model system to investigate the kinetics of PCD and cell proliferation in relation to polyamine metabolism for 16 h after injection of dexamethasone. As a marker for PCD, we used the appearance of a sub-G(1)peak in the DNA histogram. When a sub-G(1)peak appeared

Critical performativity: The unfinished business of critical management studies

We argue that critical management studies (CMS) should be conceptualized as a profoundly performative project. The central task of CMS should be to actively and pragmatically intervene in specific debates about management and encourage progressive forms of management. This involves CMS becoming affirmative, caring, pragmatic, potential focused, and normative. To do this, we suggest a range of tact

Conceptual and perceptual factors in the picture superiority effect

The picture superiority effect, i.e. better memory for pictures than for corresponding words, has been variously ascribed to a conceptual or a perceptual processing advantage. The present study aimed to disentangle perceptual and conceptual contributions. Pictures and words were tested for recognition in both their original formats and translated into participants´ second language. Multinomial Pro

Simulation of ethanol production processes based on enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials using ASPEN PLUS

The process simulator ASPEN PLUS was used for simulation of an ethanol production process based on enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials. The effect of water recycling, necessary to reduce the amount of waste water and to increase the ethanol concentration in the feed to the distillation, was investigated. For a process based on 20 t/h raw material, the amount of waste water can be red
