High-resolution infrared study of the nu(11) band of allene

The high-resolution infrared spectrum of allene has been observed in the 280-380 cm(-1) region at a nominal resolution of 0.00125 cm(-1) using the IR beamline at the MAX-1 electron storage ring in Lund. The spectrum shows the bending fundamental of the nu(11) band from which spectroscopic constants for the nu(11) level have been obtained. The accompanying hot band component 2nu(11)(2)-nu(11)(1) ha

A test of models for fungal growth based on metabolic heat rate measurements

This paper presents a test of modelling of fungal growth based on the heat produced by Penicillium roqueforti growing on malt extract agar. Thermal power (heat production rate) of P. roqueforti was measured by isothermal calorimetry at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30°C. The equivalent diameter of similar colonies growing at 20°C were measured by image analysis. Four predictive equations including time lag w

Topics in multifractal measures, nonparametrics and biostatistics

Popular Abstract in Swedish Denna avhandling består av fyra uppsatser. Den avslutande uppsatsen avhandlar statistiThis thesis consists of four papers. The first two papers, which comprise the main part of the thesis, deal with an unexpected connection between kernel density estimators and dimension spectra for multifractal measures. The third paper presents a fully automated expert system for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism from ventilation/perfusion scintigraphy. The final paper concerns statistical prop

Increased prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms associated with impaired quality of life in renal transplant recipients.

Background. Immunosuppressive therapies have been associated with gastrointestinal (GI) side effects, which may impair health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Methods. In this survey, 4,232 renal transplant recipients from Denmark, Finland, Nor-way, and Sweden completed the Short-Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire and the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS). SF-36 scores were compared with cou

Users on the Agenda - Strategies and Theories

This chapter highlights user perspectives related to the development of ICT and the launching of political strategies to involve users in the IT society. Strategies are discussed in relation to cooperation between technical and social scientists. The author points to the fact that the diffrences between various theoretical understandings of the interaction between technology and social change tend

Phenotypic plasticity in Phragmites australis as a functional response to water depth

We have performed investigations to see if the emergent macrophyte Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. exhibits phenotypic plasticity as a response to water depth and if such responses in biomass allocation pattern and morphology are functional responses, improving the performance of the plant. In greenhouse experiments plants were grown in deep or shallow water to evaluate plastic respons

Virus tropism and neutralization response in SIV infection

SIV är apsläktets variant på HIV och orsakar normalt ingen sjukdom hos sina värddjur som är olika afrikanska apor, men då asiatiska apor, t. ex. makakeSimian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infections in macaques are commonly used as models to study the pathogenesis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Both SIV and HIV normally use the CD4 receptor and an additional coreceptor for cell entry. The most common coreceptors used by HIV are CCR5 and CXCR4. SIV use CCR5 and rarely CXCR4 but may use other coreceptors as alternatives. We have studied vi

Ion binding to interfaces

A multitude of crucial chemical phenomena occur in the region where an aqueous medium meets a more apolar environment. The change in the character of the medium can be due to a macroscopic phase boundary, but it is much more common that it is due to the presence of an aggregate, a macromolecule or even an apolar molecule of moderate size. One aspect of such a transition region from polar to apolar

Emission lines in the optical spectrum of 3 Cen A

Previously, weak emission lines had been detected at red wavelengths inthe spectra of a limited sample of mid to late B type main sequencestars. A fuller description of the occurrence and origins of these lineshas yet to be forwarded, in part due to the lack of observationsdetailing the spectral transitions involved. To address this deficiency,we present a line list of weak emission features found

Population dynamics in wastewater treatment plants with enhanced biological phosphorus removal operated with and without nitrogen removal

The population dynamics of activated sludge in a pilot plant with two activated sludge systems, both designed for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR), but one of them with (BNP) and the other without (BP) nitrogen removal, was monitored during a period of 2.5 years. The influent water to the pilot plant was periodically manipulated by external addition of phosphorus (P), acetate and gluc

Long term and transitional intermittent smokers: a longitudinal study.

Objective: To investigate differences in snuff consumption, sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics between baseline intermittent smokers that had become daily smokers, stopped smoking or remained intermittent smokers at the one year follow up. Design/setting/participants/measurements: A population of 12 507 individuals interviewed at baseline in 1992-94 and at a one year follow up, aged

Marfan's syndrome: a review

Marfan's syndrome is an inherited disorder of connective tissue, in which the most pronounced abnormalities occur in the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and ocular systems. Aortic dilatation and dissection are the major causes of morbidity and mortality. Recent advances in surgical techniques and earlier intervention have reduced postoperative mortality and morbidity.
