Integrating the ecosystem-based approach into municipal climate adaptation strategies : The case of Germany

Climate change impacts are a key challenge for sustainable urban development. To address this challenge, ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA), i.e., the use of ecosystem services and biodiversity to help people adapt to climate change, is increasingly being considered as an alternative or complement to traditional, engineering-based approaches (increasingly also known as nature-based solutions). Howev

Old Age Care: The Swedish way

Old age care will become an increasing task in all societies as population aging gives an increasing number of elderly that will need help with daily activities. In this article different means – and their costs – of old age care are discussed. There are three ways of organizing old age care, the family, the market and the state, each one with its pros and cons. Irrespective of form, old age care

Interventions for treating genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection in pregnancy

Background: Genital Chlamydia trachomatis (C.trachomatis) infection may lead to pregnancy complications such as miscarriage, preterm labour, low birthweight, preterm rupture of membranes, increased perinatal mortality, postpartum endometritis, chlamydial conjunctivitis and C.trachomatis pneumonia. This review supersedes a previous review on this topic. Objectives: To establish the most efficacious

Search for new phenomena in a lepton plus high jet multiplicity final state with the ATLAS experiment using √s=13 TeV proton-proton collision data

A search for new phenomena in final states characterized by high jet multiplicity, an isolated lepton (electron or muon) and either zero or at least three b-tagged jets is presented. The search uses 36.1 fb−1 of s=13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016. The dominant sources of background are estimated using parameterized

Structure of the SnO2 (110)- (4×1) Surface

Using surface x-ray diffraction (SXRD), quantitative low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have determined the structure of the (4×1) reconstruction formed by sputtering and annealing of the SnO2(110) surface. We find that the reconstruction consists of an ordered arrangement of Sn3O3 clusters bound atop the bulk-terminated SnO2(110) surface.

French version of the profiles of occupational engagement in people with severe mental illness : Translation, adaptation, and validation

Occupational engagement is affected in many persons with severe mental illness (SMI) because of personal, occupational, and environmental issues. However, no French assessment tool measuring occupational engagement in these persons is currently available. The objectives of the study were to translate the “Profiles of Occupational Engagement in People with Severe Mental Illness” (POES), including a

Cognitive functioning following one-year natalizumab treatment : A non-randomized clinical trial

Objectives: Cognitive impairment is common in multiple sclerosis (MS) and can have serious impact on social and occupational functioning. Natalizumab reduces relapse rates, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lesions, and progression of disability. Previous studies on cognitive functioning have not based inclusion on cognitive performance criteria. The aim of the present study was to determine any po

The Duty of Mutual Trust in EU Law and the Duty to Secure Human Rights : Can the EU's Accession to the ECHR Ease the Tension?

The principle of mutual trust has been a central pillar of the European integration project, first as a tool for market integration, and as the European Economic Community became the European Union, as a mechanism for a more wide ranging integration of the legal orders of the member states. The EU now has legislation in place which imposes obligations on member states to trust each other's civil a

Investigation of the Effect of Grinding Parameters on Surface Quality in Grinding of TC4 Titanium Alloy

In order to improve the surface quality of TC4 titanium alloy parts, the effect of grinding parameters on surface integrity must be known. In this research, an experimental analysis has been conducted to understand the effect of grinding parameters, including cutting velocity, feed rate, grinding depth and abrasive size, on material removal and surface integrity. Before conducting experiment, test

Diesel soot aging in urban plumes within hours under cold dark and humid conditions

Fresh and aged diesel soot particles have different impacts on climate and human health. Whilefresh diesel soot particles are highly aspherical and non-hygroscopic, aged particles are sphericaland hygroscopic. Aging and its effect on water uptake also controls the dispersion of diesel soot inthe atmosphere. Understanding the timescales on which diesel soot ages in the atmosphere is thus important,Fresh and aged diesel soot particles have different impacts on climate and human health. Frequent miRNA-convergent fusion gene events in breast cancer

Studies of fusion genes have mainly focused on the formation of fusions that result in the production of hybrid proteins or, alternatively, on promoter-switching events that put a gene under the control of aberrant signals. However, gene fusions may also disrupt the transcriptional control of genes that are encoded in introns downstream of the breakpoint. By ignoring structural constraints of the

Nanoscale Chain Alignment and Morphology in All-Polymer Blends Visualized Using 2D Polarization Fluorescence Imaging : Correlation to Power Conversion Efficiencies in Solar Cells

All-polymer blends are promising materials for organic electronics. Their performance critically depends on the quality of mixing of the electron donor and acceptor polymers and on the local chain organization. We investigated spatially resolved photoluminescence properties of as-prepared and annealed blends of poly[2,3-bis(3-octyloxyphenyl)quinoxaline-5,8-diyl-alt-thiophene-2,5-diyl] (TQ1) and po

Exchange of CO2 in Arctic tundra : Impacts of meteorological variations and biological disturbance

An improvement in our process-based understanding of carbon (C) exchange in the Arctic and its climate sensitivity is critically needed for understanding the response of tundra ecosystems to a changing climate. In this context, we analysed the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2 in West Greenland tundra (64°N) across eight snow-free periods in 8 consecutive years, and characterized the key process

Cellulose-Organic Montmorillonite Nanocomposites as Biomacromolecular Quorum-Sensing Inhibitor

The aim of this study was to develop simple cellulose nanocomposites that can interfere with the quorum-sensing (QS)-regulated physiological process of bacteria, which will provide a sustainable and inexpensive solution to the serious challenges caused by bacterial infections in various products like food packaging or biomedical materials. Three cellulose nanocomposites with 1-5 w% octadecylamine-

The effects of counseling on fear of childbirth

Objective To investigate women's experiences of attending existing counseling programs for childbirth-related fear and the effect of this counseling over time. Design A longitudinal survey. Setting Three hospitals in the central north of Sweden. Sample A selected sample of 936 women. Of these, 70 received counseling due to fear of childbirth (study-group). Methods Data were collected with question

Maternal depressive symptoms have a negative impact on prenatal attachment – findings from a Swedish community sample

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate attachment and its association to obstetric and demographic factors as well as emotional well-being using a standard measure of prenatal attachment during pregnancy. Background: The strength of the mothers’ relationship with her baby has important implications in the postnatal period, influencing the relationship she develops with her child, a

Childbirth fear in Swedish fathers is associated with parental stress as well as poor physical and mental health

Objective: to compare self-rated health and perceived difficulties during pregnancy as well as antenatal attendance, birth experience and parental stress in fathers with and without childbirth related fear. Design: a longitudinal regional survey. Data were collected by three questionnaires. Setting: three hospitals in the middle-north part of Sweden. Participants: 1047 expectant fathers recruited
