Magnetic resonance imaging, scintigraphy, and arthroscopic evaluation of traumatic hemarthrosis of the knee

Forty patients with traumatic knee hemarthrosis were examined within 1 week after injury and observations made with magnetic resonance imaging, scintigraphy, arthroscopic evaluation, radiography, and physical examination were compared. Thirty-four patients (85%) had anterior cruciate ligament injuries according to the arthroscopic findings and 28 (83%) of these had associated meniscal tears. Magne

Osteoarthritis of the knee is not a well defined illness, but is a result of different causes that may lead to joint failure due to chondral damage, synovial inflammation, subchondral bone formation, and the formation of osteophytes along the joint lines. The pathogenesis is unclear. We still lack treatment to cure the early prosess of chondral degeneration. The treatment of choice in early and mo

American Strategic Communication in Iraq : the “Rapid Reaction Media Team”

The purpose of this paper is to interpret an American military media strategy designed for the Iraq war from a perspective drawing on recent theoretical discussions of space and time. The material consists of a short white paper that was declassified under the Freedom of Information Act and published by the NSA in 2007. It outlines a ‘Rapid Reaction Media Team’ which was tasked with designing and

What Became of the New Public Diplomacy? : Recent Developments in British, U.S. & Swedish Public Diplomacy Policy and Evaluation Methods

This article examines the relationship between theories of the ‘new’ public diplomacy and recent attemptsby foreign ministries in the United Kingdom, United States and Sweden to develop public diplomacystrategies for the early twenty-first century. It provides a summary of policy debates in each nation alongsideanalysis of the evaluation methods that have been designed to support them. The article

Diplomacy : Digital and Public

In this chapter, I will discuss alternative ways of understanding public and digital diplomacy. Rather than beginning with what these concepts are supposed to mean, I will argue that their main value is in signifying the intention to reform diplomatic organisations. I will then discuss the relationship of digital and public diplomacy to traditional diplomatic practices, and describe the expanded s

A neo-documentalist lens for exploring the premises of disciplinary knowledge making

This article applies a neo-documentalist approach to explore disciplinary information and knowledge making practices. The aim is to show how conceptions and materialities of what counts as documentation and documents are intertwined with changing and persisting disciplinary and sub-disciplinary practices of producing information and knowledge, of knowing, and informing. A collective, multivocal au

Corporate and State Responsibilities in Conflict-Affected Areas

Some of the emblematic cases of corporate-related infringements of human rights have appeared in unstable and violence-ridden zones, including armed conflict and other contexts with lower levels of conflict, internal disturbances, widespread violence and latent tensions. Businesses have been involved in different ways, as direct perpetrators, accomplices or mere trading partners. This article trac

From charity to institutional development: Reflections on Newmont’s CSR strategies and conflict-avoidance in Ghana

In 2003 Newmont has signed an investment agreement with the government of Ghana that resulted in the inauguration in 2006 of the large, gold-producing project at Ahafo. The challenge for Newmont has been to resolve the initial conflict resulting from a land dispossession that brought communities close to famine and address the lingering tensions by working towards sustainable solutions. This artic

The limits of supply chain responsibility – A critical analysis of CSR instruments

One challenge in the area of supply chain management has been achieving sustainable compliance with labour rights throughout the entire production chain, including lower tiers of production. This article inquires specifically around sub-contracting, especially what is a brand’s or a buyer’s responsibility regarding workers’ rights beyond its first tier of suppliers. In-depth literature on this iss

Tendon healing in vivo : An experimental model

Flexor tendon segments were incubated in a diffusion chamber in the subcutis of rabbits. Tendons incubated up to 6 weeks in the diffusion chamber showed proliferating and migrating cells from the epitenon cell layer as well as viable endotenon cells. Explants frozen in liquid nitrogen prior to incubation showed no signs of extrinsic cell contamination and remained non-viable indicating that no cel

Proteoglycan epitope in synovial fluid in gonarthrosis : 28 cases of tibial osteotomy studied prospectively for 2 years

High tibial osteotomy was performed for medial gonarthrosis in 28 patients. Preoperatively, and at 3, 12, and 24 months after surgery, clinical and radiographic examinations were made, and joint-fluid samples were aspirated. Arthroscopy was performed preoperatively and at 24 months. Immunoassay of proteoglycan epitope in joint fluid showed an increase in concentration at all times as compared with

Markers of cartilage metabolism in arthrosis

The mechanisms involved in the disease process in arthrosis are largely unknown, with genetics, joint malalignment, overload or trauma, obesity, and aging as some of the known or suspected contributing factors. Even less well known is how these general factors are translated into disease mechanisms at the cell and tissue levels. However, it may be argued that degradation of cartilage matrix is a k

Restoration of the injured flexor tendon surface : A possible role for endotenon cells. A morphological study of the rabbit tendon in vivo

The ability of rabbit deep flexor tendons to restore the gliding surface and to heal, without the normal contribution of the superficial epitenon layer of the tendons, was studied by light and scanning electron microscopy. The epitenon layer was carefully removed, from defined segments of the tendons. The remaining central tendon tissue was divided, sutured and placed in diffusion chambers subcuta

Metalloproteinases, tissue inhibitor, and proteoglycan fragments in knee synovial fluid in human osteoarthritis

Objective. To determine the concentrations of human stromelysin-1, collagenase, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP), and proteoglycan fragments in knee synovial fluid in patients with injury to the meniscus or anterior cruciate ligament, posttraumatic osteoarthritis, primary osteoarthritis, or pyrophosphate arthritis. Methods. Synovial fluid samples were collected from patients with knee

The structure of aggrecan fragments in human synovial fluid : Evidence that aggrecanase mediates cartilage degradation in inflammatory joint disease, joint injury, and osteoarthritis

Objective. To determine the proteolytic fragmentation patterns and N-terminal sequence of aggrecan fragments in human synovial fluid from patients with inflammatory arthritides, joint injury, or osteoarthritis (OA). Methods. Knee synovial fluid was obtained from patients with joint injury, OA, acute pyrophosphate arthritis (pseudogout), reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or juvenile rheumato
