Diamond-Blackfan Anemia: Erythropoiesis Lost in Translation
Många DBA patienter är kortväxta, en del har medDiamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a congenital erythroid aplasia that usually presents as macrocytic anemia during infancy. Linkage analysis suggests that at least four genes are associated with DBA of which two have been identified so far. The known DBA genes encode the ribosomal proteins S19 and S24 accounting for 25% and 2% of the patients respectively. This study shows that RPS19 gene transfer

Adaptive responses to static conditions in nutrient-rich cultures of luminous Ralstonia eutropha
The lux-gene fused Ralstonia eutropha, when adapting to static conditions, causes stratification of air-exposed and nutrient-rich cultures at above 0.15 mg biomass ml(-1). The O-2 respiring biofilm (luminous neuston) phase, along with the dark sub-neustonic suspension phase, develops within 5-60 min. The instability of the biphasic static culture was identified as a reason for occasionally observa
Nonattendance in mammographic screening: a study of intraurban differences in Malmo, Sweden, 1990-1994
Mammographic screening may reduce breast cancer mortality. Not all women, however, come for examination. The objective in this study from Malmo has been to assess extent to which the rate of nonattendance varies between residential areas with different sociodemographic profiles. The study is based on 32,605 women, 45 to 68 years old and living in 17 areas, who between 1990 and 1994 were invited to
Regional localization and developmental expression of the BCR gene in rodent brain
The BCR gene is implicated in the development of Ph-positive leukemia through its fusion with the nonreceptor tyrosine kinase gene ABL. The normal 160 kDa Bcr protein has several functional domains, and recently one specific role for Bcr was established in the regulation of respiratory burst activity in white blood cells. Bcr expression levels are relatively constant throughout mouse development u
Detailed Modeling of soot formation in a partially stirred plug flow reactor
The purpose of this work is to propose a detailed model for the formation of soot in turbulent reacting flow and to use this model to study a carbon black furnace. The model is based on a combination of a detailed reaction mechanism to calculate the gas phase chemistry, a detailed kinetic soot model based on the method of moments, and the joint composition probability density function (PDF) of the
Histopathological and cell biological factors of ductal carcinoma in situ before and after the introduction of mammographic screening
With the introduction of mammographic screening the incidence of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) has increased to 10-15% of all breast cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there were any morphological and cell biological differences between DCIS detected during the pre-screening (n = 39) as opposed to the screening period (n = 120). We could not demonstrate any statistically s
Human metabolism of radiocaesium revisited
Three adult volunteers (2 males and I female) have ingested radioactive caesium in two edible forms in order to compare the gastrointestinal uptake and the subsequent short-term and long-term biokinetics. Foodstuffs made of fresh-water fish or mushrooms from regions in Sweden of high Cs-137 deposition was ingested together with a (CsCl)-Cs-134-solution mixed with soft drinks. Whole-body countings

CD4-independent use of the CCR5 receptor by sequential primary SIVsm isolates
Background: CD4-independence has been taken as a sign of a more open envelope structure that is more accessible to neutralizing antibodies and may confer altered cell tropism. In the present study, we analyzed SIVsm isolates for CD4-independent use of CCR5, mode of CCR5-use and macrophage tropism. The isolates have been collected sequentially from 13 experimentally infected cynomolgus macaques and

Model Reduction for Linear Time-Varying Systems
The thesis treats model reduction for linear time-varying systems. Time-varying models appear in many fields, including power systems, chemical engineering, aeronautics, and computational science. They can also be used for approximation of time-invariant nonlinear models. Model reduction is a topic that deals with simplification of complex models. This is important since it facilitates analysis an

Band Structure in 79Y and the Question of T=O Pairing
Gamma rays in the N=Z + 1 nucleus Y-79 were identified using the reaction Si-28(Fe-54, p2n)Y-79 at a 200 MeV beam energy and an experimental setup consisting of an array of Ge detectors and the Recoil Mass Spectrometer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. With the help of additional gamma-gamma coincidence data obtained with Gammasphere, these gamma rays were found to form a strongly coupled rotation

Study of tau-pair production in photon-photon collisions at LEP and limits on the anomalous electromagnetic moments of the tau lepton
Tau-pair production in the process e(+)e(-) --> e(+)e(-) tau(+)tau(-) was studied using data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP2 during the years 1997 - 2000. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 650 pb(-1). The values of the cross-section obtained are found to be in agreement with QED predictions. Limits on the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of the tau lepton are dedu
