Genotyping of Staphylococcus aureus in bovine mastitis and correlation to phenotypic characteristics
Reducing the prevalence of mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is essential to improve animal health and reduce economic losses for farmers. The clinical outcome of acute mastitis and risk of progression to persistent mastitis can, at least to some extent, be related to genetic variants of the strain causing the infection. In the present study we have used microarrays to investiga
CD44 Deficiency Is Associated with Increased Susceptibility to Stress-Induced Anxiety-like Behavior in Mice
CD44 is a cell surface adhesion molecule and its principal ligand is hyaluronic acid (HA), a key component of the brain’s extracellular matrix. CD44 levels are decreased in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of depressed individuals, and the CD44 gene has been identified in genome wide association study as a possible risk gene in suicidal behavior. In order to define the pathobiological mechanisms by w
Kinetics of the reaction of Cl atoms with CHCl3 over the temperature range 253-313 K
The reaction CHCl3 + Cl → CCl3 + HCl was studied in the atmospherically relevant temperature range from 253 to 313 K and in 930 mbar of N2 diluent using the relative rate method. A temperature dependent reaction rate constant, valid in the temperature range 220-330 K, was determined by a fit to the result of the present study and that of Orlando (1999); k = (3.77 ± 0.32) × 10-12 exp((-1011 ± 24)/T
A regulatable AAV vector mediating GDNF biological effects at clinically-approved sub-antimicrobial doxycycline doses
Preclinical and clinical data stress the importance of pharmacologically-controlling glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) intracerebral administration to treat PD. The main challenge is finding a combination of a genetic switch and a drug which, when administered at a clinically-approved dose, reaches the brain in sufficient amounts to induce a therapeutic effect. We describe a highl
Selective etching of InP in InAs/InP nanowires resulting in 11 nm nanogaps
We demonstrate a wet chemical method to selectively etch InP segments within InAs/InP heterostructure nanowires based on a photo-assisted HAc/HBr solution etching process. We successfully etched InP segments ranging from 60 nm down to about 10 nm in size.
Cyclosporin A, but not FK 506, protects mitochondria and neurons against hypoglycemic damage and implicates the mitochondrial permeability transition in cell death
Induction of the mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) has been implicated in cellular apoptosis and in ischemia-reperfusion injury. During MPT, a channel in the inner mitochondrial membrane, the mitochondrial megachannel, opens and causes isolated mitochondria to swell. MPT and mitochondrial swelling is inhibited by cyclosporin A (CsA), which may also inhibit apoptosis in some cells. Treatm

Expression of podocalyxin-like protein is an independent prognostic biomarker in resected esophageal and gastric adenocarcinoma
Background: Podocalyxin-like protein (PODXL) is a cell surface transmembrane glycoprotein, the expression of which has been associated with poor prognosis in a range of malignancies. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of PODXL expression on survival in esophageal and gastric adenocarcinoma. Methods: The study cohort consists of a consecutive series of 174 patients with esophageal
Re-evaluation of classical prognostic factors in resectable ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma carries a poor prognosis with annual deaths almost matching the reported incidence rates. Surgical resection offers the only potential cure. Yet, even among patients that undergo tumor resection, recurrence rates are high and long-term survival is scarce. Various tumorrelated factors have been identified as predictors of survival after potentially curative resectio

A cost analysis of introducing an infectious disease specialist-guided antimicrobial stewardship in an area with relatively low prevalence of antimicrobial resistance
Background: Antimicrobial stewardship programs have been widely introduced in hospitals as a response to increasing antimicrobial resistance. Although such programs are commonly used, the long-term effects on antimicrobial resistance as well as societal economics are uncertain. Methods: We performed a cost analysis of an antimicrobial stewardship program introduced in Malmö, Sweden in 20 weeks 201
A 128 Kb Single-Bitline 8.4 fJ/Bit 90MHz at 0.3V 7T Sense-Amplifierless SRAM in 28 nm FD-SOI
In this study, a 128 kb ultra low voltage (ULV) SRAM, based on a 7T bitcell with one bitline, is presented. Overall energy efficiency is enhanced by optimizations on all abstraction levels, i.e., from bitcell to macro integration. Degraded performance and reliability due to ULV operation is recovered by selectively overdriving the bitline and wordline with a new single-cycle charge-pump. A dedicat
An Area Efficient Single-Cycle xVDD Sub-Vth on-Chip Boost Scheme in 28 nm FD-SOI
An on-chip, low power, and area efficient charge-pump (CP) that generates a multiple of the supply voltage (VDD) in a single clock cycle is presented. The proposed CP utilizes parallel cross-connected CP units, which are implemented using MIM (metal-insulator-metal) capacitors. In the target application, i.e., a sub-threshold SRAM, the capacitors are accommodated on top of the memory banks to remo

Extending critical performativity
In this article we extend the debate about critical performativity. We begin by outlining the basic tenets of critical performativity and how this has been applied in the study of management and organization. We then address recent critiques of critical performance. We note these arguments suffer from an undue focus on intra-academic debates; engage in author-itarian theoretical policing; feign re
Conscience as control - managing employees through CSR
Corporate social responsibility has become an important topic for both academics and practitioners. CSR typically stands for corporate responses to ethical, environmental and social issues. Whilst extant research has predominately focused on CSR in relation to external stakeholders and taking a macro-institutional and/or functionalist perspective, we provide a critical engagement with the interact

Lack of long-term drift in timolol's effectiveness in patients with ocular hypertension
PURPOSE: To report the change over time in intraocular pressure in patients treated with topical timolol or placebo.METHODS: Ninety patients with untreated ocular hypertension, defined as elevated intraocular pressure and normal visual fields, were randomly assigned to treatment and prospectively observed at 3-month intervals for up to 10 years in a double-masked fashion. The study end point was o
