The influence of alcohol drinking and alcohol use disorders on psychiatric disorders and suicidal behavior

The present review reports on the influence of alcohol drinking and alcohol use disorders on psychiatric disorders and suicidal behaviour. The base of the study was previous reviews of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism publication Alcohol and Health in 1993 and by Helgason in 1996. Using a defined search strategy in Medline, another 42 articles from 1994 to 1996 were included

Defense mechanisms in alcoholics attending outpatient treatment. : Results from the MCT-test (Meta-Contrast Technique)

Defensive strategies were studied in 72 alcoholics participating in outpatient treatment by using, before the treatment started, the Meta-Contrast Technique, MCT, a percept-genetic method. Alcoholics had less often adaptive strategies than controls. A lack of adaptive defense strategies was related to a more impaired psychic status, more psychological benefits from drinking, and more psychiatric s

The Meta-Contrast Technique : a projective test predicting suicide

Sixty-nine inpatients who had attempted suicide were studied by means of the Meta-Contrast Technique (MCT), a projective test measuring personality factors, especially defensive strategies. The patients were divided into 3 subgroups, one of which was defined as stereotypy only, which denotes stereotypy (perceptual retardation) without any other coded defenses. At follow-up 7 of 8 completed suicide

Psychiatric symptoms in alcoholics attending outpatient treatment

The importance of psychiatric symptomatology for the treatment course of alcoholics was analyzed in a long-term outpatient treatment study. Seventy-two patients, 60 men and 12 women, were personally interviewed during treatment and after 3 years. Before treatment psychiatric symptoms were rated according to the Comprehensive Psychopathological Rating Scale (CPRS). Women had significantly higher sc

How IKEA turned a crisis into an opportunity

In 2013–2014, the IKEA cuddle toy Lufsig was connoted as a symbol of the Chief Executive (CE) of Hong Kong, prompting stakeholders to make negative associations with the corporation. Our study examines how IKEA mediated communication on traditional media and social media to turn this crisis into an opportunity. This study informs corporate communicators and researchers about the integrated utiliza

Ganglioneuroma with an uncommon location in a six-year-old girl

A 6-year-old girl with a neurogenic bladder disease is described. Additional gait disturbances and mild but progressive foot deformities led to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a ganglioneuroma located exclusively intraspinally. It is suggested that the tumor originated from remnant neural crest cells, probably early in life or even prenatally.

Detection of factor IX inhibitors by immunoradiometric assay

An immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) for the determination of factor IX inhibitors in haemophilia B was developed. The assay was based on competitive binding between radiolabelled anti-IX and inhibitors in the test material of immobilized IX:C. 5 haemophiliacs with known inhibitors were investigated with the new method and with a conventional neutralization test. An inhibitor titre as low as 5 X 10(-

Haemophilia : strategies for carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis

In 1977 WHO published in the Bulletin a Memorandum on Methods for the Detection of Haemophilia Carriers. This was produced following a WHO/WFH (World Federation of Haemophilia) Meeting of Investigators in Geneva in November 1976, and has served as a valuable reference article on the genetics of haemophilia. The analyses discussed were based on phenotypic assessment, which, at that time, was the on

Combustion Characteristics of a Swirl Dry Low Emission Burner Concept for Gas Turbine Application : Experiments and Simulations

In the current global energy scenario, gas turbine can provide delicate balance between the booming worlds energy requirement and a pollutant free sustainable society. Cleaner combustion of fuel (particular natural gas), efficient, reliable, low maintenance and cost effective operation of gas turbine attracted scientific community to push the limit further (high efficiency and zero emission gas tu

Entangled media histories : The value of Transnational and Transmedial Approaches in Media Historiography

The transnational and transmedial dimensions of media and communication throughout history have not always been adequately recognised. In this research report we propose the concept of entanglement as a means of better understanding the dynamic interconnectedness of media across semiotic, technological, institutional and political boundaries in history. Entanglement is a concept that can be employThe transnational and transmedial dimensions of media and communication throughout history have not always been adequately recognised. A principal component meta-analysis on multiple anthropometric traits identifies novel loci for body shape

Large consortia have revealed hundreds of genetic loci associated with anthropometric traits, one trait at a time. We examined whether genetic variants affect body shape as a composite phenotype that is represented by a combination of anthropometric traits. We developed an approach that calculates averaged PCs (AvPCs) representing body shape derived from six anthropometric traits (body mass index,

In search of building types : On visitor centers, thresholds and the territorialisation of entrances

The aim of this paper is to contribute to an actantial approach to building type studies through a study of the visitor centre and its role in contemporary spatial production. The article takes its empirical departure in the (from a Swedish perspective) intense urbanization of the Scania region, in the southern part of Sweden. Looking at building types in terms of actants implies that different se

A three bit second order audio band delta sigma modulator with 98.2dB SQNR

A three bit second order delta sigma modulator for audio applications implemented in 130nm CMOS technology is presented. The modulator features two integrators, a flash quantizer and two current steering DACs. In order to minimize the effect of delays in the DACs, excessive loop delay (ELD) compensation is utilized. Using an oversampling ratio (OSR) of 80, the design consumes 2.8mW and achieves a
