Conflicting demands on wetland ecosystem services: nutrient retention, biodiversity or both?

1. Wetland ecosystems may, besides having considerable economical value, increase landscape biodiversity and function as traps for nutrients from land to freshwater- and marine systems. As a result of these features, wetlands are nowadays often protected and restored, and many countries have even initiated wetland construction programmes. 2. In the present study, we aim at increasing the knowledge

Clinical and histopathological features of malignant melanoma in germline CDKN2A mutation families

Primary cutaneous malignant melanomas (CMMs) from 26 individuals belonging to nine families with an identified CDKN2A mutation were clinically and histopathologically compared with 78 matched CMM controls and with a population-based series of CMMs (n=667). All tumours were histopathologically re-examined. CDKN2A-associated cases were significantly less invasive compared with the matched controls,

Monitoring of glucose and glutamate using enzyme microstructures and scanning electrochemical microscopy.

Glucose oxidase and glutamate oxidase lines, with typical width of 100 microm, were patterned on gold surfaces using a micro-dispensing system, by shooting 100 pl droplets of the corresponding enzyme solutions. The probe of a scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) was then carefully positioned in the close proximity of the enzyme microstructure and poised to +600 mV vs. Ag/AgCl, KCl 0.1 M. The

Enteral crude red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) lectin--phytohemagglutinin--induces maturational changes in the enterocyte membrane proteins of suckling rats.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of enterally administered crude red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) lectin, PHA, on the expression of brush-border membrane vesicle (BBMV) proteins, in particular Na+/H+ exchangers (NHEs), in the small intestine of suckling rats. Gavage of PHA to 14-day-old rats for 3 days resulted in altered protein/glycoprotein patterns as analyzed by SDS-PAGE. Immunob

Improved operational stability of chloroperoxidase through use of antioxidants.

Chloroperoxidase (CPO) from Caldariomyces fumago is a potentially very useful enzyme due to its ability to catalyze a large variety of stereoselective oxidation reactions, but poor operational stability is a main limitation for commercial use. In the present study, the possibility of increasing the operational stability by use of antioxidants was investigated using the oxidation of indole as model

Long-term land-use changes and extinction of specialised butterflies

1. Land-use change in 450 ha in southern Sweden between 1814 and 2004 was recorded. Butterflies and burnet moths were surveyed in 1904–1913 and 2001–2005. 2. We explore if local extinctions were related to land-use changes and species attributes. 3. Land use changed drastically over the 190-year period, and the largest relative change occurred for hay meadows with late harvest, which decreased fro

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumour in a postmenopausal woman showing all facets of the insulin resistance syndrome (IRS)

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumours are rare sex stromal tumours with an incidence of < 0.5% of all ovarian tumours. Most frequently this tumour occurs in young women with a history of amenorrhoea, hirsutism and lowered pitch. Here, we report on a woman with IRS, postmenopausal virilization and increased testosterone levels due to a Sertoli-Leydig cell tumour. This is the first case to suggest an associat

Electrical communication of cytochrome enriched Escherichia coli JM109 cells with graphite electrodes

In the present study three different strains of Escherichia coli (JM 109 - a native "wild type" strain, JM 109/pBSD 1300 - a strain overproducing the membrane anchor domain of Bacillus subtilis succinate-quinone reductase, SQR, a protein that contains two transmembraneously arranged heme groups and JM109/pLUV 1900 - a strain overproducing cytochrome c(550) from B. subtilis, a protein where the cyt

Magnetic resonance imaging and histopathology in dementia, clinically of frontotemporal type

The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography findings in 28 patients with the clinical diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) were compared with the findings in a control group of 76 individuals without dementia or stroke. A pattern of frontal and temporal atrophy with predominantly frontal white matter changes was found in the FTD patients, and this was significantly different

Analytic derivatives for the Cholesky representation of the two-electron integrals.

We propose a formalism for calculating analytic derivatives of the electronic energy with respect to nuclear coordinates using Cholesky decomposition of the two-electron integrals. The formalism is derived by exploiting the equivalence of Cholesky decomposition and density fitting when a suitable auxiliary basis set is used for expanding atomic orbital product densities in the latter. An implement
