Minority report : Structure and bonding of YbNi3Ga9 and YbCu3Ga8 obtained in gallium flux

The gallides YbNi3Ga9 and YbCu3Ga8 were obtained from flux growth reactions of Yb, various transition metals M, and Ga, to test a stability diagram that predicts the formation of ternary intermetallic phases. The structure of YbNi3Ga9 was redetermined to resolve discrepancies in the literature. For an untwinned crystal of YbNi3Ga9, the ErNi3Al9-type structure was confirmed (space group R32, a =

Rubber elasticity of polymer networks in explicitly non-Gaussian states. Statistical mechanics and LF-NMR inquiry in hydrogel systems

We present a statistical mechanics theory of rubber-like elasticity in swollen and unswollen polymer networks characterized by explicitly non-Gaussian distribution functions (Laplace's, Cauchy's, and continuous Poisson's in the exponential limit). An important outcome is the derivation of new families of statistical and mechanical laws, including a discussion of energy functions of strain invarian

The velocity distribution of white dwarfs in Gaia EDR3

Using a penalized maximum likelihood, we estimate, for the first time, the velocity distribution of white dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood. Our sample consists of 129 675 white dwarfs within 500 pc in Gaia Early Data Release 3. The white dwarf velocity distributions reveal a similar structure to the rest of the solar neighbourhood stars, reflecting that white dwarfs are subject to the same dynami

Sanctions and second home tourism : the experience of rural areas in Shemiranat, Iran

This study explores the impact of sanctions on the development of second home tourism in the context of a rentier state. The subject was examined with special reference to rural regions of Shemiranat County in Tehran, Iran, where second homes have developed over the past four decades. The results indicating that devaluation of the national currency, caused by the sanctions, led to turmoil in the s

Energifattigdom i Sverige

Global China as Method

Is China part of the world? Based on much of the political, media, and popular discourse in the West the answer is seemingly no. Even after four decades of integration into the global socioeconomic system, discussions of China continue to be underpinned by a core assumption: that the country represents a fundamentally different 'other' that somehow exists outside the 'real' world. Either implicitl

Phthalate levels in prenatal and postnatal bedroom dust in the SELMA study

Phthalates are common in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics and numerous consumer goods in our homes from which they can migrate and adhere to indoor dust particles. It is known that indoor dust exposure contribute to human phthalate intake; however, there is a lack of large studies with a repeated-measure design investigating how phthalate levels in indoor dust may vary over time in people's homes

Predicting the Redshift of Gamma-Ray Loud AGNs Using Supervised Machine Learning. II

Measuring the redshift of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) requires the use of time-consuming and expensive spectroscopic analysis. However, obtaining redshift measurements of AGNs is crucial as it can enable AGN population studies, provide insight into the star formation rate, the luminosity function, and the density rate evolution. Hence, there is a requirement for alternative redshift measurement

Human well-being and per capita energy use

Increased wealth and per capita energy use have transformed lives and shaped societies, but energy poverty remains a global challenge. Previous research has shown positive relationships among metrics of health and happiness and economic indices such as income and gross domestic product and between energy use and human development. To our knowledge, however, no comprehensive assessment has examined

Asking about Social Circles Improves Election Predictions Even with Many Political Parties

Traditionally, election polls have asked for participants' own voting intentions. In four elections, we previously found that we could improve predictions by asking participants how they thought their social circles would vote. A potential concern is that the social-circle question might predict results less well in elections with larger numbers of political options because it becomes harder to ac

Effects of Increasing Salinity by Drip Irrigation on Total Grain Weight Show High Yield Potential of Putative Salt-Tolerant Mutagenized Wheat Lines

Twenty-three lines from a mutagenized Bangladeshi BARI Gom-25 wheat population that included previously identified salt-tolerant lines, and the BARI Gom-25 control variety, were cultivated in a drip-irrigated salinity test field at Salt Farm Texel, Netherlands, to assess their performance during salt stress in European climatic conditions. Lines were tested at irrigation salinity levels of 1, 4, 8

Vehicle Behavior Prediction and Generalization Using Imbalanced Learning Techniques

The use of learning-based methods for vehicle behavior prediction is a promising research topic. However, many publicly available data sets suffer from class distribution skews which limits learning performance if not addressed. This paper proposes an interaction-aware prediction model consisting of an LSTM autoencoder and SVM classifier. Additionally, an imbalanced learning technique, the multicl

Giving voice to space : the grammar of Northern Alta spatial roots

Recent cross-linguistic studies on spatial language reveal a great diversity in the way languages encode spatial information. Yet, given that there are not many spatial studies that have systematically targeted languages with a Philippine-type voice system, it is not clear how spatial expression is structured in such languages. The aim of this study is to address this knowledge gap through an in-d

Designing games to disseminate research findings

Sharing the findings of research projects to improve future practice is often an important objective of educational research. However disseminating the results to groups that will directly benefit can sometimes be problematic and there may also be complexities around presenting research in a context that gives real-world relevance. The informal environment of game play is one method that can be ut

Monovalent salt and pH-induced gelation of oxidized cellulose nanofibrils and starch networks : Combining rheology and small-angle X-Ray scattering

Water quality parameters such as salt content and various pH environments can alter the stability of gels as well as their rheological properties. Here, we investigated the effect of various concentrations of NaCl and different pH environments on the rheological properties of TEMPOoxidised cellulose nanofibril (OCNF) and starch-based hydrogels. Addition of NaCl caused an increased stiffness of the
