On Structured Realizability and Stabilizability of Linear Systems

We study the notion of structured realizability for linear systems dened over graphs. A stabilizable and detectable realization is structured if the state-space matrices inherit the sparsity pattern of the adjacency matrix of the associated graph. In this paper, we demonstrate that not every structured transfer matrix has a structured realization and we reveal the practical meaning of this fact. W

Family, Friend, or Foe? Essays in Empirical Microeconomics

This thesis consists of four studies that deal with how individual outcomes are shaped by social interactions. The scope of the thesis ranges from relationships between individuals in what is arguably the most fundamental building block in society today — the family — to more generalized relationships between different groups in society. The first study examines whether twins’ inferior health at

Capturing better data: The potential for better insight into user's requirements through iterative prototyping

This article aims at introducing to a wider circle a complementary research approach in user oriented work. Its most fundamental part is the use of technology as a tool for capturing the needs, wishes and dreams of a user. The incitement for us to start developing this method was an experience based, serious, questioning of conventional methods such as interviews, questionnaires, etc, and their c

Using Local Differential Operators to Model Dispersion in Dielectric Media

Dispersion of electromagnetic waves is usually described in terms of an integro-differential equation. In this paper we show that whenever a differential operator can be found that annihilates the susceptibility kernel of the medium, then dispersion can be modeled by a partial differential equation without nonlocal operators.
