Career incentives in political hierarchy: evidence from Imperial Russia

Adaptive radiations in butterflies : Evolutionary history of the genus Erebia (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae)

We studied the speciose butterfly genus Erebia by reconstructing its phylogenetic relationships using parsimony and Bayesian approaches. We estimated times and rates of diversification for its lineages and employed a biogeographical analysis in order to reconstruct its evolutionary history. DNA sequence data from one mitochondrial gene and three nuclear genes were analyzed for a total of 74 specie

Evolutionary history of the Dactylorhiza maculata polyploid complex (Orchidaceae)

Taxonomic complexity may be associated with migration history and polyploidy. We used plastid and nuclear DNA markers to investigate the evolutionary history of the systematically challenging Dactylorhiza maculata polyploid complex. A total of 1833 individuals from 298 populations from throughout Europe were analysed. We found that gene flow was limited between the two major taxa, diploid ssp. fuc

Insight into Danube sturgeon life history: trace element assessment in pectoral fin rays

Sturgeon populations in the Danube River have experienced severe decline during the last several decades, mostly due to the poorly regulated fishery, river fragmentation and water pollution. This study focuses on gaining better understanding of sturgeon life history primarily by addressing the assessment of microelement accumulation in sturgeon pectoral fin rays, especially of strontium and calciu

The Prime Mover of Taiwan’s Trade With Russia and its Development

After a fifty yearlong period of political hostility, Taiwan perceived the fall of Soviet Union as an opportunity to establish Russia as a prime trade partner. Given Russia’s relationship with China and its importance in promoting Taiwan’s international status, the road was paved with many obstacles. Scholars argue that Taiwan deploys its trade diplomacy in order to promote its national awareness
