Will It Fly? Influence of TRIPS implementation on innovations in post-Communist states.

WTO is an increasingly influential international organization, which aims to liberalize global commercial activities and TRIPS is an important part of WTO agenda, which provides minimum standards for IPR regulation for all the members. Empirical evidence suggests that stronger IPR regimes contribute to increasing inward FDI, R&D investment and innovations. Starting out from these findings the

Protection of property rights under the European Convention on Human Rights and the Russian national legislation

The importance of property in everyday life of people is obvious. Although sometimes it looks like property does not fit into the human rights context, the author believes that the right to property as any other human right needs protection. The fact that 20 percent of all violations found by the European Court of Human Rights in the last eight years are connected with property rights illustrates

The man in the purple coat : Art and empire in Ilia Repin’s Reception of Volost Elders

This chapter discusses Ilia Repin’s court commission, Reception of Volost Elders by Alexander III in the Courtyard of the Petrovsky Palace in Moscow (1886). It argues that the painting reflected marginalizing discourses on the non-Russian minorities dominant at the outset of Alexander III’s rule. Repin employed a differentiating approach to rendering ethnically and religiously diverse representati

Market Reforms and Consumerism in China and the Soviet Union

Capitalizing reforms would come to China in 1978, and to the U.S.S.R. in 1985. While the Chinese reforms have been uninterrupted to the modern day, similar reforms in the Soviet Union would lead to its collapse, and to the adoption of capitalism by the Russian Federation. These 'communist' economic reforms were political movements informed by ideology, but China’s more effective reforms re

“Otiosorum hominum receptacula”: Orthodox Religious Houses in Ingria, 1615–52

The essay collects and analyses sources on the Russian Orthodox monasteries of the Swedish province of Ingria (Ingermanland). These houses have rarely been treated; their very existence is largely unknown among specialists, although they are the only Orthodox religious houses to have existed in Scandinavia before the mid-20th century, apart from those of post-1809 Finland. On the basis of printe

North Eastern Europe and Swedish great power policy: Reflections on historical consciousness

The article discusses the usefulness of the concept of North Eastern Europe. It was developed as a cognitive instrument in order for historical analysis to focus on social structures and processes rather than on states. Swedish historical consciousness is linked to the history of the seventeenth century, not least thanks to the historical novels by Peter Englund, Sweden of those times was a multin

In this thesis, I have examined the literary archetype of the yurodivy or “fool for Christ’s sake” and how it has developed within Russian literature. I find that the character may be portrayed significantly different from the real-life yurodivy depicted in the hagiographic tales. The roots for this development are mainly found in Fyodor Dostoevsky, who constructed what is called the “stylized hol

Poland and the advocacy for a wider Central and Eastern Europe

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has brought an unprecedented chance to end the existence of harmful stereotype of Central and Eastern Europe as a region where the Kremlin has special interests. It has cost a lot of political efforts to bring Czechia, Poland, or the Baltic states out of this equation and join the Western institutional framework. Now there is enough momentum for doing the same with

Large-scale patterns of genetic variation in chloroplast (cp) and nuclear DNA in the widespread European herb species Silene latifolia and S. dioica were investigated using cpPCR-RFLPs, non-coding cpDNA sequences, AFLPs and sequences of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA). The results of the analyses of cpDNA variation using PCR-RFLPs and non-coding sequence data

Colonialism and trauma in Central and Eastern Europe

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has provided the region with an opportune moment to examine its own deep-rooted legacies of colonialism. Subjected to outside rule in various forms over the past two centuries, the region could now finally grasp the chance to overcome this trauma and truly claim its “subjectivity” on the international stage.
