Numerical simulations of absorption properties of InP nanowires for solar cell applications
In this paper, we present results of optical simulations on the absorption of nanowires. The simulation was performed with rigorous coupled wave analysis to determine the potential of nanowires for use in a new kind of nanostructured solar cell. The overall absorption of the solar cell structure was calculated for four different diameters of the nanowires and also in dependence of light wavelength
Site-specific survival rates for cancer of unknown primary (CUP) according to location of metastases.
Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) is diagnosed at the metastatic stage and despite extensive diagnostic work-up the primary tumor often remains unidentified. Limited population-based survival data are available for metastatic location and none are available that link the location with the cause of death, which might give clues about the tissue of origin. A total of 9,306 CUP patients with extranodal
Occupational and socio-economic risk factors for giant cell arteritis: a nationwide study based on hospitalizations in Sweden.
Objectives: Socio-economic and occupational factors may contribute to risk of immune-mediated disorders. The importance of these factors in giant cell arteritis (GCA) is unknown. This is the first nationwide study with the aim of investigating possible associations between socio-economic status (SES)/occupation and hospitalization for GCA. Method: A nationwide database was constructed by linking S
Novel Mutation in the KCNJ2 Gene Is Associated with a Malignant Arrhythmic Phenotype of Andersen-Tawil Syndrome.
Andersen-Tawil syndrome (ATS) is a rare inherited multisystem disorder associated with mutations in KCNJ2 and low prevalence of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. Our aim was to describe the clinical course of ATS in a family, in which the proband survived aborted cardiac arrest (ACA) and genetic screening revealed a previously unknown mutation (c.271_282del12[p.Ala91_Leu94del]) in the KCNJ
Measurement of breast volume is a useful supplement to select candidates for surgical breast reduction
INTRODUCTION: The indication for breast reduction in a public welfare or an insurance paid setting depends on the severity of the subjective symptoms and the clinical evaluation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of breast volume as an objective criterion to establish the indication for breast reduction surgery, thus establishing a standard decision basis that can be shared by surg
Multiplexing Chopper Systems for Pulsed Neutron Sources: Practical Basics
Multiplexing techniques can be used for enhancing neutron scattering experimental capabilities at pulsed neutron sources. They consist of chopper systems which extract several neutron pulses with different wavelength distributions from each source pulse. In recent years such methods have been experimentally well established for both elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. The current paper revie
Patients With Hip Osteoarthritis Have a Phenotype With High Bone Mass and Low Lean Body Mass.
Although hip osteoarthritis (OA) is common, its etiology is poorly understood. Specifically, it is not known whether hip OA is associated with abnormal relationships among the anthropometric and musculoskeletal characteristics that are associated with OA in general.
Improved terminology for experimental field-flow fractionation.
Application of Polygonal Finite Elements to Two-Dimensional Mechanical and Electro-Mechanically Coupled Problems
Naturally evolving Voronoi discretisation of two-dimensional plane domains renders representative microstructures that turn out to be useful for the modelling and simulation of polycrystalline materials. Hybrid finite element approaches are employed on such polygonal discretisations to solve, for instance, mechanical and electromechanical problems within a finite element context. In view of solvin
External Validation of Diagnostic Models to Estimate the Risk of Malignancy in Adnexal Masses
Purpose: To externally validate and compare the performance of previously published diagnostic models developed to predict malignancy in adnexal masses. Experimental Design: We externally validated the diagnostic performance of 11 models developed by the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) group and 12 other (non-IOTA) models on 997 prospectively collected patients. The non-IOTA models inc
Factor H Binds to the Hypervariable Region of Many Streptococcus pyogenes M Proteins but Does Not Promote Phagocytosis Resistance or Acute Virulence.
Many pathogens express a surface protein that binds the human complement regulator factor H (FH), as first described for Streptococcus pyogenes and the antiphagocytic M6 protein. It is commonly assumed that FH recruited to an M protein enhances virulence by protecting the bacteria against complement deposition and phagocytosis, but the role of FH-binding in S. pyogenes pathogenesis has remained un
Nigral 6-hydroxydopamine lesion impairs performance in a lateralised choice reaction time task-Impact of training and task parameters
Unilateral intrastriatal and intra-medial forebrain bundle injections of 6-OHDA impair the performance in a lateralised choice reaction time task. However, the extent and pattern of deficits after nigral 6-OHDA injections is less well studied, as well as the impact of training regime or the modification of various task parameters. The nigral 6-OHDA lesion resulted in impaired response accuracy and
Greening in the circumpolar high-latitude may amplify warming in the growing season
We present a study that suggests greening in the circumpolar high-latitude regions amplifies surface warming in the growing season (May-September) under enhanced greenhouse conditions. The investigation used a series of climate simulations with the Community Atmospheric Model version 3-which incorporates a coupled, dynamic global vegetation model-with and without vegetation feedback, under both pr
Green-Glued Products for Structural Applications
The results from bending tests on 107 laminated, green-glued, beams manufactured from Norway spruce side boards are presented. The beams were made by face gluing 21-25 mm thick boards using a commercial one-component moisture curing polyurethane adhesive. In addition to the bending test results, results from shape stability measurements after climatic cycling and bond line strength and durability
Interleaved parton showers and tuning prospects
General-purpose Monte Carlo event generators have become important tools in particle physics, allowing the simulation of exclusive hadronic final states. In this article we examine the PYTHIA 8 generator, in particular focusing on its parton-shower algorithms. Some relevant new additions to the code are introduced, that should allow for a better description of data. We also implement and compare w
Allelic variation at innate immune genes (avian beta-defensins), within a natural population of great tits
In order to fully understand pathogen induced natural variation in fitness in wild animal populations it is important to identify and study the degree of non-synonymous alleles in genes that code for components of the immune system. This study investigates the degree of natural genetic variation at 6 innate immune genes belonging to the -defensin family within a single population of birds, the gre
Impact of urban warming on earlier spring flowering in Korea
Using long-term (1954-2004) observations of four selected species in South Korea: goldenbell (Forsythia koreana), azalea (Rhododendron mucronulatum), cherry (Prunus yedoensis), and peach (Prunus persica), the impact of urban warming on spring flowering was investigated. Trends of early spring temperatures and first-flowering dates (FFDs) of the four plants were cross-compared among nine differentl
Quantitative Proteomic Analysis of Eight Cartilaginous Tissues Reveals Characteristic Differences as well as Similarities between Subgroups.
Human synovial joints display a characteristic anatomic distribution of arthritis e.g. rheumatoid arthritis primarily affects the metacarpophalangeal and proximal finger joints, but rarely the distal finger joints, while osteoarthritis occur in the distal and proximal finger joints. Pelvospondylitis has a selective localization to the spine and sacroiliac joints. Is this tropism due to differences
Spectroscopic Tools Applied to Element Z = 115 Decay Chains
Nuclides that are considered to be isotopes of element Z = 115 were produced in the reaction 48Ca + 243Am at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt. The detector setup TASISpec was used. It was mounted behind the gas-filled separator TASCA. Thirty correlated α-decay chains were found, and the energies of the particles were determined with high precision. Two important spectros
