GAIA: Composition, formation and evolution of the Galaxy

The GAIA astrometric mission has recently been approved as one of thenext two ``cornerstones'' of ESA's science programme, with a launch datetarget of not later than mid-2012. GAIA will provide positional andradial velocity measurements with the accuracies needed to produce astereoscopic and kinematic census of about one billion stars throughoutour Galaxy (and into the Local Group), amounting to a

Factors regulating recruitment from the sediment to the water column in the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Gloeotrichia echinulata

1. The influence of light, temperature, sediment mixing and sediment origin (water depth) on the recruitment of the cyanobacterium Gloeotrichia echinulata was examined in the laboratory. 2. Light and temperature were the most important factors initiating germination in G. echinulata. 3. The extent of germination (recruited biovolume) was mainly regulated by temperature and sediment mixing. Further

Mucosal T lymphocyte numbers are selectively reduced in integrin alpha E (CD103)-deficient mice

The mucosal lymphocyte integrin alpha E(CD103)beta 7 is thought to be important for intraepithelial lymphocyte (IEL) localization or function. We cloned the murine integrin gene encoding alpha E, localized it to chromosome 11, and generated integrin alpha E-deficient mice. In alpha E-/- mice, intestinal and vaginal IEL numbers were reduced, consistent with the known binding of alpha E beta 7 to E-

Teaching, Learning, and Student Output : A Study of French in the Classroom

Student speech production is an essential part of language learning in the foreign-language classroom. The students usually have few opportunities to use the language outside the classroom, which underscores the importance of making good use of the time spent in the classroom. Much research has shown that learner output is necessary, or at least facilitative, in language acquisition. This claim fo

Shifts between clear and turbid states in a shallow lake: multi-causal stress from climate, nutrients and biotic interactions

We used long-term monitoring data to assess causes behind a recent shift front a clear to a turbid water state in Lake Takern, Sweden. The lake has a previous record of shifts between clear-water and turbid states. but the causes behind these shifts are not well known. During the recent shift, which occurred in 1995-1997, Submerged vegetation Subsequently declined after a 30-year period of clear-w

A Swedish family with a mutation in the peripherin/RDS gene (Arg-172-Trp) associated with a progressive retinal degeneration

PURPOSE: To clinically characterize a Swedish family with autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa due to a mutation, Arg-172-Trp, in the peripherin/RDS gene. METHODS: Full clinical evaluation including kinetic visual field testing, measurement of dark-adaptation threshold, and full-field electroretinography in seven patients with autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa and three healthy family mem

Infrared photodetectors in heterostructure nanowires

We report on spectrally resolved photocurrent measurements on single self-assembled nanowire heterostructures. The wires, typically 3 mu m long with an average diameter of 85 nm, consist of InAs with a 1 mu m central part of InAsP. Two different sets of wires were prepared with phosphorus contents of 15 +/- 3% and 35 +/- 3%, respectively, as determined by energy-dispersive spectroscopy measurement

Tender or not tender: Test-retest repeatability of pressure pain thresholds in the trapezius and deltoid muscles of healthy women

Objective: To examine the test-retest repeatability of pressure pain thresholds in the shoulder muscles of healthy women. Design: Four experimental sessions (days 1, 3, 28, 30), each including 4 consecutive pressure pain threshold measurements at 10-minute intervals. Subjects: Twenty-four healthy female volunteers, mean age 42 years. Methods: Two examiners measured pressure pain thresholds bilater

A study of exercise-induced microalbuminuria in type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus

Microalbuminuria is thought to be an important prognostic factor in diabetes mellitus. To study the influence of changes in blood pressure on the development of microalbuminuria during exercise, two exercise tests were carried out. A total of 32 insulin dependent diabetic men whose age at onset was less than 30 years, mean duration of diabetes 14 years (range 7 to 21) and mean age 29 years (range

Monotone regression and density function estimation at a point of discontinuity

Pointwise limit distribution results are given for the isotonic regression estimator at a point of discontinuity. The cases treated are independent data, phi- and alpha-mixing data and subordinated Gaussian long range dependent data. Pointwise limit results for the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator of a monotone density are given at a point of discontinuity, for independent data. The limi

Vacuum-assisted wound closure and mesh-mediated fascial traction - A novel technique for late closure of the open abdomen

Background Open abdomen (OA) treatment often results in difficulties in closing the abdomen. Highest closure rates are seen with the vacuum-assisted wound closure (VAWC) technique. However, we have experienced occasional failures with this technique in cases with severe visceral swelling needing longer treatment periods with open abdomen. Feasibility and short-term outcome of a novel combination o

The act of interpretation. A view form semiotics

In this essay, an attempt is made to derive a model of interpretation from the conception of the sign developed in semiotics. The kind of interpretation discussed here involves the intervention of a interpreting subject between the sender and the receiver of a primary act of communication; this is different from interpretation in the sense of a second act of communication, taking its point of depa

Human G protein-coupled receptor GPR-9-6/CC chemokine receptor 9 is selectively expressed on intestinal homing T lymphocytes, mucosal lymphocytes, and thymocytes and is required for thymus-expressed chemokine-mediated chemotaxis

TECK (thymus-expressed chemokine), a recently described CC chemokine expressed in thymus and small intestine, was found to mediate chemotaxis of human G protein-coupled receptor GPR-9-6/L1.2 transfectants. This activity was blocked by anti-GPR-9-6 monoclonal antibody (mAb) 3C3. GPR-9-6 is expressed on a subset of memory alpha4beta7(high) intestinal trafficking CD4 and CD8 lymphocytes. In addition,

Neck vibration causes short-latency electromyographic activation of lower leg muscles in postural reactions of the standing human.

To study how quickly cervical proprioceptive information induced muscular responses in the lower leg to control posture in the standing human we investigated lower leg muscle electromyography and force-plate data from 10 healthy normal subjects, when perturbed by posterior neck muscle vibration. At the onset of vibration the tibialis anterior muscle was activated at latencies of 70-100 ms whilst t
