Manned Missions, Geoengineering and Planetary Protection : How Safe is Safe Enough?
If we ever decide to start geoengineering another world, and maybe even terraform a world that is not presently habitable for humans, it is also highly probable that it will become less habitable for any indigenous life. Making sure, or at least trying to determine the probability that a potentially habitable world is in fact uninhabited will thus be an important step before we start any geo-engin

Added value of double reading in diagnostic radiology,a systematic review
Objectives: Double reading in diagnostic radiology can find discrepancies in the original report, but a systematic program of double reading is resource consuming. There are conflicting opinions on the value of double reading. The purpose of the current study was to perform a systematic review on the value of double reading. Methods: A systematic review was performed to find studies calculating th
Impact of donor chest radiography on clinical outcome after lung transplantation
BackgroundOrgan donation guidelines recommend a “clear” conventional bedside chest radiograph before lung transplantation despite only moderate accuracy for cardiopulmonary abnormalities.PurposeTo evaluate the influence of donor image interpretation on lung transplantation outcome in recipients by following early and late complications, one-year survival, and to correlate imaging findings and bloo
IEEE Std. P1687.1: translator and protocol
The IEEE Std. P1687.1 working group is currently exploring alternatives to IEEE Std. 1149.1 test access port (TAP) as the interface between the boundary of integrated circuits (ICs) and IEEE Std. 1687 networks. In this paper, we investigate the use of universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter (UART) to access IEEE Std. 1687 networks. We have developed a protocol to describe the information trans

What measures should be taken to improve conditions for Swedish Farmland Birds, as reflected in the Farmland Bird Index?
Many birds species connected to the agricultural landscape have for several decades fared poorly in Sweden, as well as in Europe as a whole. This is reflected in the decline of the Farmland Bird Index, an official EU indicator for farmland birds specifically, and biodiversity in general. The Swedish Board of Agriculture invited us to propose measures that will improve the conditions for farmland b
The preservative 2-(thiocyanomethylthio)benzothiazole : A potential allergen in leather products
Background: Allergic contact dermatitis caused by leather is common, and several responsible allergens, such as tanning agents, glues, mercaptobenzothiazole derivatives, and dyes, but also antimicrobials and antifungals, are involved. Material and methods: Three female patients were referred to the Departments of Dermatology in a Belgian university hospital following skin reactions caused by leath
Formation and regeneration of protoplasts and spheroplasts of gastrointestinal strains of lactobacilli.
Methods were developed for the formation of protoplasts and spheroplasts of gastrointestinal strains of Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus gasseri, and Lactobacillus salivarius. Attempts to regenerate vegetative cells from protoplasts were not successful, but spheroplasts could be regenerated consistently for five of six strains.

Arrayed molecular barcoding identifies TNFSF13 as a positive regulator of acute myeloid leukemia-initiating cells
Dysregulation of cytokines in the bone marrow microenvironment promotes acute myeloid leukemia cell growth. Due to the complexity and low throughput of in vivo stem-cell based assays, studying the role of cytokines in the bone marrow niche in a screening setting is challenging. Herein, we developed an ex vivo cytokine screen using 11 arrayed molecular barcodes, allowing for a competitive in vivo r

Rare allelic forms of PRDM9 associated with childhood leukemogenesis
One of the most rapidly evolving genes in humans, PRDM9, is a key determinant of the distribution of meiotic recombination events. Mutations in this meiotic-specific gene have previously been associated with male infertility in humans and recent studies suggest that PRDM9 may be involved in pathological genomic rearrangements. In studying genomes from families with children affected by B-cell prec
Lack of association between hemolysin production and acute inflammation in human urinary tract infection
Hemolysins are cytolytic proteins which have been extensively characterized at the molecular level, however, their in vivo functions remain unclear. This study analyzed the association of hemolysin production with the inflammatory response in patients with urinary tract infection (UTI). Infants and children with their first episode of UTI (n = 644) were followed prospectively. The body temperature
Molecular characterization of a plasmid-borne (pGT633) erythromycin resistance determinant (ermGT) from lactobacillus reuteri 100-63
Lactobacillus reuteri 100-63 contains a 9.8 kb plasmid (pGT633) encoding resistance to the macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin (MLS) type B antibiotics. The restriction endonucleases AccI, BamHI, Bcl I, EcoRI, EcoRV, HhaI, HindII, Hpa I, KpnI, SalI, and SspI were employed to establish a physical map of pGT633. Next, genetic transfer experiments were conducted to establish the host range of pGT633.
