Predictors of long-term beneficial effects on blood pressure after percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty in atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis.

AIM: This retrospective study evaluated long-term effects of percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA) in atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS), and predictors of benefit on blood pressure (BP). METHODS: During 1997-2003, 234 patients (age 69+/-11 years, 138 [59%] males) underwent PTRA for ARAS at Malmö Vascular Centre. Cure was defined as diastolic (D)BP

Rate of heat release measurements with the Swedish box test

Abstract The Swedisn box apparatus was modified to include an oxygen analysis of the exhaust gases to be compared with the conventional exhaust gas temperature measurement. A slow-burning material shows good correlation between the temperature measurement and the rate of heat release. A fast-burning material, however, consumes all the available oxygen, and the temperature measurement becomes a mea

Glioma cell activation by Alzheimer's peptide Abeta1-42, alpha1-antichymotrypsin, and their mixture.

We compared the effects of Alzheimer’s peptide (Ab1–42), a1-antichymotrypsin (ACT) and an ACT/Ab1–42 mixture on human glioma DK-MG cells. The solution of Ab (5 mM) formed by 2-h incubation at room temperature induced tumour necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) and interleukin (IL)-6 levels by 55 and 45%, respectively, and increased gelatinase B activity by 67%, while exposure of cells to the ACT/Ab1–42 mixtu

The YIGI (YPL201c) encoded protein is involved in regulating anaerobic glycerol metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Under anaerobic conditions S. cerevisiae produces glycerol to regenerate NAD+ from the excess NADH produced in cell metabolism. We here report on the role of an uncharacterized protein, Yig1p (YpI201cp), in anaerobic glycerol production. Yig1p was previously shown to interact in two-hybrid tests with the GPP1 and GPP2 encoded glycerol 3-phosphatase (Gpp), and we here demonstrate that strains overe

SERF: a new antigen in the Cromer blood group system

The Cromer blood group system consists of eight high incidence and three low incidence antigens carried on decay-accelerating factor (DAF). This report describes the identification and characterization of a new Cromer high incidence antigen, named SERF. Sequence analyses of DNA from a Thai female whose serum contained the alloantibody to a high incidence antigen in the Cromer blood group system (a

Chronic BDNF deficiency permanently modifies excitatory synapses in the piriform cortex.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), aside from its classic neurotrophic role in development and survival of neurons, has been shown to be involved in modification and plasticity of central synapses. In mice with BDNF gene deletion (BDNF+/-), deficits in synaptic transmission are often observed but are reversed readily by administration of BDNF, suggesting its acute effect. In support, blocka

Mutations in GYPB exon 5 drive the S-s-U+(var) phenotype in persons of African descent: implications for transfusion

BACKGROUND: The S-s-U- phenotype in African Americans is due to a GYPB deletion, however the molecular basis for the S-s-U+var phenotype is poorly understood. Variable reactivity of S-s-U+var RBCs with monoclonal anti-He or by anti-U has been demonstrated, however the underlying molecular bases for this phenotype remain to be established. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Hemagglutination was performed on

Abdominal aortic aneurysm morphology in candidates for endovascular repair evaluated with spiral computed tomography and digital subtraction angiography

PURPOSE: To analyze the morphology of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) and to study the usefulness of spiral computed tomography (CT) versus digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in the evaluation of patients for endovascular repair. METHODS: Of 133 AAA patients (120 men, mean age 67 years, range 52 to 84) evaluated preoperatively with CT imaging, 77 endograft candidates (68 men) were also assess

Operation strategy of a Dual Fuel HCCI Engine with VGT

HCCI combustion is well known and much results regarding its special properties have been published. Publications comparing the performance of different HCCI engines and comparing HCCI engines to conventional engines have indicated special features of HCCI engines regarding, among other things, emissions, efficiency and special feedback-control requirements. This paper attempts to contribute to th

On the Cauchy problem for a nonlinearly dispersive wave equation

We establish the local well-posedness for a new nonlinearly dispersive wave equation and we show that the equation has solutions that exist for indefinite times as well as solutions which blowup in finite time. Furthermore, we derive an explosion criterion for the equation and we give a sharp estimate from below for the existence time of solutions with smooth initial data.

Optical spectroscopy in biomedicine - detection of embedded inclusions and in vivo pharmacokinetics

Popular Abstract in Swedish Denna avhandling beskriver hur fluorescens kan användas inom biomedicinområdet. I mänsklig vävnad fiThe main theme of this thesis is the use of fluorescence spectroscopy in biomedicine. The work presented in the thesis can be divided into three areas of applications. The first area involves the use of fluorescence to find the location of a deeply situated fluorophore within turbid media. Fluorescence emitted from the fluorophore will be attenuated when propagating through the medium, due to the

Hydrodynamical simulations of convection-related stellar micro-variability. I. Statistical relations for photometric and photocentric variability

Local-box hydrodynamical model atmospheres provide statistical information about the spatial dependence, as well as temporal evolution, of a star's emergent radiation field. Here, we consider late-type stellar atmospheres for which temporal changes of the radiative output are primarily related to convective (granular) surface flows. We derived relations for evaluating the granulation-induced, disk

Religious Facilitation Through Intense Liturgical Participation : A Quasi-Experimental Study of Swedish Pilgrims to Taizé

Vad händer med en människas religiösa attityA considerably small amount of empirical research was found on the process of religious facilitation through liturgical participation and worship (cf., Heimbrock & Boudewijnse, 1990; Wikström, 1994a, 1994b). Using a quasi-experimental design, the present investigation therefore addressed this issue. The process of religious facilitation through intense liturgical participation was regarded as

Safety in Case of Fire - The Effect of Changing Regulations

In this doctoral thesis some fundamental problems concerning society's ability to control the safety in buildings in the case of fire by issuing performance-based building regulations are identified and analysed. Fire protection documentation from forty-six projects was studied, together with a detailed analysis of the Swedish building regulations and an extensive risk analysis of a class of build

Sparbössor och silverskedar. Dopgåvor som materialiserade känslor

Gift-giving is part of the ceremonial behaviour in many celebrations associated with rites of passage. In this article I discuss the gifts children recieve at christening parties. Even though some parents emphasize that they do not want "typical" christening presents, like pewter savings-boxes or silver photography frames, they often find that the guests nevertheless have brought such gifts. An ex
