The role of energy in the industrial revolution and modern economic growth
The expansion in the supply of energy services over the last couple of centuries has reduced the apparent importance of energy in economic growth despite energy being an essential production input. We demonstrate this by developing a simple extension of the Solow growth model, which we use to investigate 200 years of Swedish data. We find that the elasticity of substitution between a capital-labor
Inner power, physical strength and existential well-being in daily life: relatives' experiences of receiving soft tissue massage in palliative home care
Aim and objectives. This article explores relatives' experiences of receiving soft tissue massage as a support supplement while caring for a dying family member at home. Background. In palliative home care, relatives play an important role as carers to seriously ill and dying family members. To improve their quality of life, different support strategies are of importance. Complementary methods, su
Electrocardiographic predictors of clinical outcome in ST-elevation myocardial infarction
Malignant ventricular arrhythmias, particularly ventricular fibrillation (VF), remain an important contributor to mortality in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The size of myocardial injury is one more important factor influencing the prognosis of STEMI patients. The search for new non-invasive markers, which can be relatively simply calculated using conventional ECG recording and can p
3d photoionization and subsequent decay of atomic gallium
We present an experimental and theoretical study of 3d photoionization and subsequent Auger decay of atomic gallium. The synchrotron radiation-induced electron spectra have been compared and analysed using multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations. It has been shown that the theoretically predicted photoelectron spectrum is in rather good agreement with the experiment allowing us to identify the
Development and Validation of a Risk Score Predicting Substantial Weight Gain over 5 Years in Middle-Aged European Men and Women
Background: Identifying individuals at high risk of excess weight gain may help targeting prevention efforts at those at risk of various metabolic diseases associated with weight gain. Our aim was to develop a risk score to identify these individuals and validate it in an external population. Methods: We used lifestyle and nutritional data from 53 degrees 758 individuals followed for a median of 5
Downsizing: Personnel Reductions at the Swedish Tobacco Monopoly, 1915-1939
Downsizing is a phenomenon that remarkably seldom has been the subject of historical inquiry. This study investigates how a state-owned enterprise, the Swedish Tobacco Monopoly, reduced its labour inputs because of changed consumer preferences and mechanization in the 1920s and 1930s. By combining qualitative and quantitative evidence, the study addresses questions about the ways of achieving redu

Off-line Foveated Compression and Scene Perception: An Eye-Tracking Approach
With the continued growth of digital services offering storage and communication of pictorial information, the need to efficiently represent this information has become increasingly important, both from an information theoretic and a perceptual point of view. There has been a recent interest to design systems for efficient representation and compression of image and video data that take the featu
The Influence of Rare Genetic Variation in SLC30A8 on Diabetes Incidence and beta-Cell Function
Context/Objective: The variant rs13266634 in SLC30A8, encoding a beta-cell-specific zinc transporter, is associated with type 2 diabetes. We aimed to identify other variants in SLC30A8 that increase diabetes risk and impair beta-cell function, and test whether zinc intake modifies this risk. Design/Outcome: We sequenced exons in SLC30A8 in 380 Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) participants and ide

Tissue Ingrowth Into Foam but Not Into Gauze During Negative Pressure Wound Therapy
Background. Foam and gauze are two types of wound fillers used for negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). Differences in the wound healing effects of foam and gauze have been observed clinically. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of NPWT on the wound bed using foam and gauze. Methods. A porcine peripheral wound model was treated with NPWT at 0, -75 mmHg, or -125 mmHg for 72

Vortex Ring Formation in the Left Ventricle of the Heart: Analysis by 4D Flow MRI and Lagrangian Coherent Structures.
Recent studies suggest that vortex ring formation during left ventricular (LV) rapid filling is an optimized mechanism for blood transport, and that the volume of the vortex ring is an important measure. However, due to lack of quantitative methods, the volume of the vortex ring has not previously been studied. Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) is a new flow analysis method, which enables in vi
The influence of Poisson's ratio on the excitability of the first higher symmetric (S1) zero-group velocity Lamb mode.
The impact echo (IE) method is widely used in non-destructive testing of concrete plate like structures but has proved difficult to apply on asphalt pavements. Observed low IE resonance amplitudes on asphalt have been attributed to larger material damping but the present study shows that it may also be an effect from a larger Poisson's ratio. The IE frequency corresponds to the stationary resonanc
C4b-Binding Protein Deposition is Induced in Diseased Aortic Heart Valves, Coinciding with C3d
Background and aim of the study: It has been found recently that activated complement is more widespread in diseased aortic valves compared to the endogenous complement inhibitors C1-inhibitor and clusterin. Previously, another endogenous inhibitor of complement, C4b-binding protein (C4BP) has been described in atherosclerotic diseased coronary arteries. The study aim was to analyze C4BP levels in

Multi-strange baryon production at mid-rapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV
The production of Xi(-) and Omega(-) baryons and their anti-particles in Pb-Pb collisions root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV has been measured using the ALICE detector. The transverse momentum spectra at mid-rapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5) for charged Xi and Omega hyperons have been studied in the range 0.6 < P-T < 8.0 GeV/c and 1.2 < p(T) < 7.0 GeV/c, respectively, and in several centrality inter
