Clinical effect of stereotyped B-cell receptor immunoglobulins in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia: a retrospective multicentre study

Background About 30% of cases of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) carry quasi-identical B-cell receptor immunoglobulins and can be assigned to distinct stereotyped subsets. Although preliminary evidence suggests that B-cell receptor immunoglobulin stereotypy is relevant from a clinical viewpoint, this aspect has never been explored in a systematic manner or in a cohort of adequate size that wou

Effects of water gradients and use of urea on skin ultrastructure evaluated by confocal Raman microspectroscopy.

The rather thin outermost layer of the mammalian skin, stratum corneum (SC), is a complex biomembrane which separates the water rich inside of the body from the dry outside. The skin surface can be exposed to rather extreme variations in ambient conditions (e.g. water activity, temperature and pH), with potential effects on the barrier function. Increased understanding of how the barrier is affect

Enantioselective synthesis of anti-beta-amido-alpha-hydroxy esters via asymmetric transfer hydrogenation coupled with dynamic kinetic resolution

The asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of beta-amido-alpha-keto esters providing the corresponding anti-beta-amido-alpha-hydroxy esters via dynamic kinetic resolution is reported. The use of a commercially available, or simply prepared, chiral ruthenium catalyst results in good yields as well as high diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Promises, Rights and Claims

Abstract in Undetermined The paper argues that promise rights presuppose independently existing (if not pre-existing) claims. The argument relies on the Bifurcation Thesis, according to which all claims, and all rights, can be exhaustively divided into two categories: capacity based and exercise based.

Phylogeography and conservation genetics of the common wall lizard, Podarcis muralis, on islands at its northern range.

Populations at range limits are often characterized by lower genetic diversity, increased genetic isolation and differentiation relative to populations at the core of geographical ranges. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognized that populations situated at range limits might be the result of human introductions rather than natural dispersal. It is therefore important to document the origin and

The role of seniority-zero states in nuclear level densities

At low excitation energies seniority-zero states dominate the level density of K = 0 bands in deformed even even nuclei, while they play no role at higher excitation energies. We describe the level densities in a Fermi-gas model as well as in a combinatorial level-density model and compare to detailed experimental data for some rare-earth nuclei. An explanation is provided for recent observations

Neuroimmune Interactions of Enteric Neurons and Mast Cells: Friends or Foes?

Irritable bowel syndrome, IBS, är en vanlig mag-tarm sjukdom som man inte Psychological distress or physical strain lead to reduced blood flow in the intestine since other organs are prioritised. One aim of this thesis was to investigate how ischemia followed by reperfusion affects the large intestine and the enteric nervous system (ENS). To do so an experimental ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) model was set up using rat large intestine. In order to study how the ENS reacts

Flame Spread Modelling of Complex Textile Materials

Flame spread in textile materials was modelled using two different simulation programs: the semi-empirical area-based code ConeTools, and the computational fluid dynamics, CFD, code Fire Dynamics Simulator, FDS, (version 5). Two textile products developed within the EU-project Flexifunbar were selected for study. The two products show a large difference in composition and application area, one mat

The role of energy in the industrial revolution and modern economic growth

The expansion in the supply of energy services over the last couple of centuries has reduced the apparent importance of energy in economic growth despite energy being an essential production input. We demonstrate this by developing a simple extension of the Solow growth model, which we use to investigate 200 years of Swedish data. We find that the elasticity of substitution between a capital-labor

Inner power, physical strength and existential well-being in daily life: relatives' experiences of receiving soft tissue massage in palliative home care

Aim and objectives. This article explores relatives' experiences of receiving soft tissue massage as a support supplement while caring for a dying family member at home. Background. In palliative home care, relatives play an important role as carers to seriously ill and dying family members. To improve their quality of life, different support strategies are of importance. Complementary methods, su

Electrocardiographic predictors of clinical outcome in ST-elevation myocardial infarction

Malignant ventricular arrhythmias, particularly ventricular fibrillation (VF), remain an important contributor to mortality in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The size of myocardial injury is one more important factor influencing the prognosis of STEMI patients. The search for new non-invasive markers, which can be relatively simply calculated using conventional ECG recording and can p

3d photoionization and subsequent decay of atomic gallium

We present an experimental and theoretical study of 3d photoionization and subsequent Auger decay of atomic gallium. The synchrotron radiation-induced electron spectra have been compared and analysed using multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations. It has been shown that the theoretically predicted photoelectron spectrum is in rather good agreement with the experiment allowing us to identify the
