Use of celite-immobilised chloroperoxidase in predominantly organic media
It is possible to use the chloroperoxidase from Caldariomyces fumago to catalyse the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde in predominantly organic media, even at water activities below 1.0, if the oxidant is tert-butyl hydroperoxide. The enzyme activity increased with increasing water activity and no enzyme activity was observed at water activities below 0.6. Hydrophobic solvents such as cy

Determining the impact of air-side cleaning for heat exchangers in ventilation systems
Cleaning coils can be an efficient way to reduce the need for reparations and maintain the functionality of a ventilation system. This study builds upon existing knowledge concerning the contamination of heat exchangers. Through field measurements on coils and heat-recovery units, a laboratory experiment on a coil, and a generic calculation example, this study determines the impact of sustained co

Long-term prospects of malnourished children after rehabilitation at the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre of St Mary's Hospital, Mumias, Kenya.
The growth and survival of children was studied after rehabilitation for malnutrition at the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) of St Mary's Hospital on average 1.5 year after discharge. The findings are intended partly to provide descriptive information on later progress in the community of these children and also to identify specific risk factors. Of 50 children eligible for follow-up, 39 (78

Catabolism of prothrombin-chylomicron complexes in vivo in the rat
The metabolism in vivo in the rat of 125I-prothrombin-chylomicron complexes was compared to that of free 125I-prothrombin injected in saline or together with chyle chylomicrons. The group that obtained 125I-prothrombin-chylomicron complexes exhibited a faster initial decrease of plasma 125I-prothrombin, a higher radioactivity in the liver and more trichloroacetic acid soluble 125I in plasma than i
Role of platelet factor Xa in chylomicron-prothrombin complexes induced platelet activation
The effects of chylomicron-prothrombin complexes on platelet activation, including platelet aggregation, serotonin release, arachidonic acid release and increases of platelet cytosolic [Ca2+]i were examined. Furthermore the role of platelet factor Xa on the conversion of chylomicron bound prothrombin to thrombin was studied by using a synthetic inhibitor of factor Xa, TenStop. Minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) with carbon nanostructured additives in sheet metal forming
This work is an experimental study covering minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) in sheet metal forming. Two different lubricants have been studied. Nanosized graphite platelets (GnP) has been tested as additives to the base oils in order to improve the lubricant performance. The experiments have been performed utilizing a laboratory tribotester based on strip drawing. Friction measurements have bee
Application of Colding tool life equation on the drilling fiber reinforcement polymers
Fiber reinforcement polymer (FRP) is a hard-to-treat material used in different areas of up-to-date machine building. It has excellent mechanical properties making the material unique in different engineering solutions such as aircraft, aerospace and boatbuilding. The optimization of holemaking operations in FRP is the main aim of the current investigation. Adsorption of lipase on polypropylene powder
Adsorption of different lipases by EP-100 polypropylene powder from pure and pure lipase preparations was studied. Langmuir isotherms described the adsorption equilibria well both for protein and lipase activity adsorption. Adsorption isotherms for five different proteins all gave a similar saturation level of 220 mg protein per g carrier. Twelve commercial lipase preparations were tested for sele
Climate mitigation comparison of woody biomass systems with the inclusion of land-use in the reference fossil system
While issues of land-use have been considered in many direct analyses of biomass systems, little attention has heretofore been paid to land-use in reference fossil systems. Here we address this limitation by comparing forest biomass systems to reference fossil systems with explicit consideration of land-use in both systems. We estimate and compare the time profiles of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissio

The Ecological Limits of Poverty Alleviation in an African Forest-Agriculture Landscape
Cocoa yields in Ghana remain low. This has variously been attributed to low rates of fertilizer application, pollinator limitation, and particularly dry growing conditions. In this paper we use an African forest-agriculture landscape dominated by cocoa (Theobroma cacao) to develop an ecological production function, allowing us to identify key ecological and management limits acting on cocoa yields
