Linear Parameter-Varying Spectral Decomposition
A linear parameter-varying (LPV) spectral decomposition method, based on least-squares estimation and kernel expansions, is developed. Statistical properties of the estimator are analyzed and verified in simulations. The method is linear in the parameters, applicable to both the analysis and modeling problems and is demonstrated on both simulated signals as well as measurements of the torque in an
Modification of a PD+ controller for the orbital stabilization of the motions of an all-wheel drive mechanical system
The problem of the orbital stabilization of the forced periodic motions of a non-linear all-wheel drive mechanical system is considered within the framework of a model that is widely used in problems of the planning of the motions and feedback design for industrial robotic manipulators. The basic result is the explicit indication of one of the possible redundant sets of coordinates tranverse to th
Impact of knots on the fracture propagating along grain in timber beams
Fracture propagating along the grain of timber is one of the most relevant failure mechanisms due to the wood’s low strength and its brittle failure behaviour when subjected to excessive shear and tensile stresses perpendicular to the grain. According to the current procedures, the fracture energy of wood is determined on small clear specimens. However, for the prediction of the structural behavio

The biology of lakes and ponds
This introduction to the biology of standing waters integrates the effects of abiotic constraints and biotic interactions at both the population and community level, and examines how the distribution and success of different organisms in this freshwater habitat can be explained and predicted
Dietary polyphenol intake in europe : The european prospective investigation into cancer and nutrition (EPIC) study
Background/Objectives Polyphenols are plant secondary metabolites with a large variability in their chemical structure and dietary occurrence that have been associated with some protective effects against several chronic diseases. To date, limited data exist on intake of polyphenols in populations. The current cross-sectional analysis aimed at estimating dietary intakes of all currently known indi
Viral blips during suppressive antiretroviral treatment are associated with high baseline HIV-1 RNA levels
Background: Many HIV-1-infected patients on suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART) have transiently elevated HIV RNA levels. The clinical significance of these viral blips is uncertain. We have determined the incidence of blips and investigated important associations in the Swedish HIV-cohort. Methods: HIV-1-infected ART naïve adults who commenced ART 2007-2013 were retrospectively included. Vir
Understanding drought dynamics during dry season in Eastern Northeast Brazil
Eastern Northeast Brazil (ENEB) generally experiences a high variability in precipitation in the dry season, with amplitudes that can overcome 500mm. The understanding of this variability can help in mitigating the socio-economic issues related to the planning and management of water resources this region, which is highly vulnerable to drought. This work aims to assess spatio-temporal variability
Repeated nationwide point-prevalence surveys of antimicrobial use in Swedish hospitals : Data for actions 2003-2010
This study sought to analyse antimicrobial pressure, indications for treatment, and compliance with treatment recommendations and to identify possible problem areas where inappropriate use could be improved through interventions by the network of the local Swedish Strategic Programme Against Antibiotic Resistance (Strama) groups. Five point-prevalence surveys were performed in between 49 and 72 pa
Spatial lifecycles of cleantech industries - The global development history of solar photovoltaics
New industries develop in increasingly globalized networks, whose dynamics are not well understood by academia and policy making. Solar photovoltaics (PV) are a case in point for an industry that experienced several shifts in its spatial organization over a short period of time. A lively debate has recently emerged on whether the spatial dynamics in new cleantech sectors are in line with existing
Formation of Superlattices of Gold Nanoparticles Using Ostwald Ripening in Emulsions : Transition from fcc to bcc Structure
An efficient method to form 3D superlattices of gold nanoparticles inside oil emulsion droplets is presented. We demonstrate that this method relies on Ostwald ripening, a well-known phenomenon occurring during the aging of emulsions. The key point is that the nanoparticle concentration inside the smaller droplets is increasing very slowly with time, thus inducing the crystallization of the nanopa
Single-Port Laparoscopy-Assisted Appendectomy in Children : A Method Described
Single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy (SILA) has gained popularity in children, and several different techniques have been described, including intracorporeal and extracorporeal techniques and single-channel and multi-channel single-port techniques. However, there has been a concern that exteriorizing an infected appendix through the umbilical channel would increase the risk of postoperative w
Kissing knees - factors behind the attraction. Knee abduction in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and patellofemoral pain (PFP) are common sports-related knee injuries. Their consequences include compromised health of the effected individual and substantial financial costs for society. Increased knee abduction or a knee medial to foot position (KMFP), so called “kissing knees”, during weight-bearing activities is reported to be more common in patients wi
Spatial Differentiation in Industrial Dynamics. The Case of the Netherlands (1994–2005)
We compare the industrial dynamics in the core, semi-periphery and periphery in the Netherlands in terms of firm entry-exit, size, growth and location patterns. The contribution of our work is to provide the first comprehensive study on spatial differentiation in industrial dynamics for all firm sizes and all sectors, including services. We find that location patterns are largely consistent with t

Pneumaturia signaling a fistula between the rectum anastomosis and seminal vesicle as a complication after transanal endorectal pull-through operation for Hirschsprung's disease. A method of repair
A 2-year-old boy underwent an uneventful transanal endorectal pull-through for Hirschsprung's disease. Postoperatively he suffered from pneumaturia which prompted surgical evaluation. He was found to have a rectum to seminal vesicle fistula. He was re-operated closing the fistula through an anterior transperineal approach with a successful operative outcome.
Structural analysis of a complex between small ubiquitin-like modifier 1 (SUMO1) and the ZZ domain of CREB-binding protein (CBP/p300) reveals a new interaction surface on SUMO
We have recently discovered that the ZZ zinc finger domain represents a novel small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) binding motif. In this study we identify the binding epitopes in the ZZ domain of CBP (CREB-binding protein) and SUMO1 using NMR spectroscopy. The binding site on SUMO1 represents a unique epitope for SUMO interaction spatially opposite to that observed for canonical SUMO interaction
Endoscopically placed rectourethral guidewire facilitates the reconstruction of anus in children with anorectal malformations : a case report
The aim of this report is to present a technical detail of use in the management of an anorectal malformation (ARM). A boy with ARM and a fistula to the urethra was operated on with a posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP). Before the PSARP operation, a videoendoscopy was performed through the distal stoma down to the distal end of the rectum. The rectourethral fistula was identified and a guid
Affinity-bead-mediated enrichment of CD8+ lymphocytes from peripheral blood progenitor cell products using acoustophoresis
Acoustophoresis is a technique that applies ultrasonic standing wave forces in a microchannel to sort cells depending on their physical properties in relation to the surrounding media. Cell handling and separation for research and clinical applications aims to efficiently separate specific cell populations. Here, we investigated the sorting of CD8 lymphocytes from peripheral blood progenitor cell
