Free or central banking? : Liquidity and financial deepening in Sweden, 1834–1913

During Sweden’s nineteenth-century modernization, Enskilda banks contributed to economic expansion and integration by providing generally accepted means of payment beyond what would have been possible for the central bank, the Riksbank. The Riksbank was constrained by specie-convertibility requirements for Sweden’s currency. Contrary to previous arguments, however, the Enskilda banks did not opera

Two-View Orthographic Epipolar Geometry : Minimal and Optimal Solvers

We will in this paper present methods and algorithms for estimating two-view geometry based on an orthographic camera model. We use a previously neglected nonlinear criterion on rigidity to estimate the calibrated essential matrix. We give efficient algorithms for estimating it minimally (using only three point correspondences), in a least squares sense (using four or more point correspondences),

Control theory for software engineering : Technical briefing

Pervasiveness and complexity of modern software are challenging engineers to design applications able to guarantee the desired quality of service despite unpredictable runtime variations in their execution environment. A variety of techniques have been proposed in the last year for the design of self-adaptive applications; however, most of them is tailored to specific applications or can provide l

Iron-induced oligomerization of human FXN81-210 and bacterial CyaY frataxin and the effect of iron chelators

Patients suffering from the progressive neurodegenerative disease Friedreich’s ataxia have reduced expression levels of the protein frataxin. Three major isoforms of human frataxin have been identified, FXN42-210, FXN56-210 and FXN81-210, of which FXN81-210 is considered to be the mature form. Both long forms, FXN42-210 and FXN56-210, have been shown to spontaneously form oligomeric particles stab

Proust, China and intertextual engagement : Translation and transcultural dialogue

The book traces the literary journey that Proust's work made to China and back by means of translation, intertextual engagement, and the creation of a transcultural dialogue through migrant literature. It begins with a translation history of Proust's work in China and studies the different (re)translations and editions of La Recherche highlighting their culturally conditioned thematic emphases and

Protective and Nanoporous Alumina Films Studied in situ by X-ray and Electrochemical Methods

Till exempel har leIn this thesis, the studies of native and anodic oxides on both aluminum model single crystal surfaces as well as on aluminum alloys found in applications are presented. The focus has been on the characterization in situ as the oxide is growing by an electrochemical process called anodization. For the investigations, a combination of various X-ray scattering and spectroscopy methods, as well as el

Absorption and optimal plasmonic resonances for small ellipsoidal particles in lossy media

A new simplifed formula is derived for the absorption cross section of small dielectric ellipsoidal particles embedded in lossy media. The new expression leads directly to a closed form solution for the optimal conjugate match with respect to the surrounding medium, i.e. the optimal permittivity of the ellipsoidal particle that maximizes the absorption at any given frequency. This defnes the optim

Wildfire air pollution hazard during the 21st century

Wildfires pose a significant risk to human livelihoods and are a substantial health hazard due to emissions of toxic smoke. Previous studies have shown that climate change, increasing atmospheric CO2, and human demographic dynamics can lead to substantially altered wildfire risk in the future, with fire activity increasing in some regions and decreasing in others. The present study re-examines the

Choroid plexus-cerebrospinal fluid route for monocyte-derived macrophages after stroke

Background: Choroid plexus (CP) supports the entry of monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) to the central nervous system in animal models of traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and Alzheimer's disease. Whether the CP is involved in the recruitment of MDMs to the injured brain after ischemic stroke is unknown. Methods: Adult male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to focal cortical ischemia by perm

Enablers and barriers to project planning and scheduling based on construction projects in Oman

While the concepts of planning and scheduling seem to be adequately discussed in the project management literature, relatively few examples of factors specifically affecting the performance of planning and scheduling are to be found. The study reported in this paper investigated a set of factors identified as enablers and barriers to successful project planning and scheduling of construction proje

Assessment of effect of ductile tearing on cleavage failure probability in ductile to brittle transition region

The fracture behaviour of ferritic and ferritic martensitic steels in ductile to brittle transition (DBT) region has been extensively studied in recent years and a probabilistic approach of master curve method is generally used to describe the fracture toughness of BCC steels in DBT region as a function of temperature. The assessment of cleavage failure probability however is still untouched in th

The cultural practice of minor cinema archiving : The case of immigrant filmmakers in Sweden

The aim of this article is to present the archival practice behind two extensive research projects that we have worked on during the last decade: the Stockholm Film Workshop and minor immigrant filmmaking in Sweden. Archive has become a general catchword in today’s academia that encompasses several practices of collecting, storing, distributing and displaying. Using click-chemistry for visualizing in situ changes of translational activity in planktonic marine bacteria

A major challenge in microbial ecology is linking diversity and function to determine which microbes are actively contributing to processes occurring in situ. Bioorthogonal non-canonical amino acid tagging (BONCAT) is a promising technique for detecting and quantifying translationally active bacteria in the environment. This technique consists of incubating a bacterial sample with an analog of met

Chronic breathlessness associated with poorer physical and mental health-related quality of life (SF-12) across all adult age groups

Little is known about the impact of chronic breathlessness (modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) score ≥2 for most days, at least three of the last six months) on health-related quality of life (Short Form-12 (SF-12)). 3005 adults from randomly selected households were interviewed face-to-face in South Australia. mMRC ≥2 community prevalence was 2.9%. Adjusted analyses showed clinically meanin

Two-dimensional action spectroscopy of excitonic systems : Explicit simulation using a phase-modulation technique

Two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy has been intensively used to study electronic and vibronic coherences in biological systems and semiconductors. This technique studies coherent as well as incoherent signals that arise from the nonlinear interaction of a sequence of laser pulses. In this paper we present a direct evaluation of the 2D signal based on elementary quantum kinetics in order to compare
