Molecular Motor Transport through Hollow Nanowires

Biomolecular motors offer self-propelled, directed transport in designed microscale networks and can potentially replace pump-driven nanofluidics. However, in existing systems, transportation is limited to the two-dimensional plane. Here we demonstrate fully one-dimensional (1D) myosin-driven motion of fluorescent probes (actin filaments) through 80 nm wide, Al2O3 hollow nanowires of micrometer le

Händelser längs en väg : Finjasjöbygden med den medeltida Hovdalaborgen i centrum – från folkvandringstid till stormaktstid

The book starts in the archaeological excavations at Hovdala castle in northern Skåne. From the results emerging fråm the excavation a journey in time and space leads to a migration period bigfarm at the shore of the Finja lake.. This leads to an analysis of the colonisation and developement of the area up to the 17:th century when the castle was burned by the swedish king Gustavus II.

Structural and magnetic properties of GaAs:(Mn,Ga)As granular layers

Granular GaAs:(Mn,Ga)As films were prepared by annealing the Ga0.92Mn0.08As/GaAs layer grown by the MBE method at low temperature. The annealing was performed at 500 or 600 degrees C. It is commonly accepted that this processing should result in formation of cubic zinc blende or hexagonal MnAs inclusions depending on the temperature. We demonstrate that such a priory assumption is not justified. T

Experimentally induced habitat filtering in marine bacterial communities

We tested the habitat filtering hypothesis by measuring the phylogenetic structure in marine bacterial communities before and after experimentally induced stress. The habitat filtering hypothesis predicts that phylogenetic clustering (mean relatedness) should increase as the environment becomes suitable for only a subset of the original community. We show that community composition and phylogeneti

Computationally effective solution of the inverse problem in time-of-flight spectroscopy

Photon time-of-flight (PTOF) spectroscopy enables the estimation of absorption and reduced scattering coefficients of turbid media by measuring the propagation time of short light pulses through turbid medium. The present investigation provides a comparison of the assessed absorption and reduced scattering coefficients from PTOF measurements of intralipid 20% and India ink-based optical phantoms c

Influence of temperature on growth, toxicity and carbohydrate production of a Japanese Ostreopsis ovata strain, a toxic-bloom-forming dinoflagellate

Ostreopsis ovata is a benthic dinoflagellate that produces palytoxin and its analogues. Since the end of the 1990s, toxic blooms of O. ovata have been recorded in many tropical and temperate marine waters. These blooms often kill benthic invertebrates and cause health problems for humans. We hypothesize that increases in seawater temperature might induce these blooms. A strain of O. ovata isolated

Is there a demand for physical activity interventions provided by the health care sector? Findings from a population survey

Background: Health care providers in many countries have delivered interventions to improve physical activity levels among their patients. Thus far, less is known about the population's interest to increase their physical activity levels and their opinion about the health care provider's role in physical activity promotion. The aims of this paper were to investigate the self-reported physical acti

Size dependence of the Poisson's ratio in single-crystal fcc copper nanobeams

Elastic simulations of single-crystal copper nanobeams, of different cross section sizes and with crystallographic orientations [100] and [110] along their length directions, have been performed applying tensile mechanical loading. The molecular dynamics code LAMMPS was employed for the simulations. The Poisson's ratio, which is one of the fundamental measures of the elastic deformation behaviour

Endogenous communication and tacit coordination in market entry games An explorative experimental study

This paper explores the effects of communication in market entry games experimentally. It is shown that communication increases coordination success substantially and generate inferior outcomes for consumers when market entry costs are symmetric. Such effects are not observed when costs are asymmetric, since asymmetries provide a tacit coordination cue used by experienced players (as a substitute

Survival After 100 Years of Age: A Multivariate Model of Exceptional Survival in Swedish Centenarians

Background. Most survival studies of the elderly population have set their baselines for first examinations between 60 and 80 years. The rapidly increasing numbers of exceptionally old persons call for knowledge about determinants of exceptional survival. Methods. The Swedish Centenarian Study followed 100 centenarians from the age of 100 to death of the entire cohort, by age I I I years. A biomed

High-Throughput Monitoring of Human Papillomavirus Type Distribution

Background: There is a need for a rapid and cost-effective evaluation of the effects of different human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination strategies. Sexually active adolescents are a preferred target group for monitoring, as effects on HPV prevalence would be measurable shortly after implementation of vaccination programs. Methods: The Swedish Chlamydia trachomatis testing program offers free Chla

TEM determination of directions of (Ga,Mn)As nanowires grown by MBE on GaAs(001) substrates

P>The structure of GaMnAs nanowires (NW) with nominal Mn concentration of up to 7 at% was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The (Ga,Mn)As NW were grown on epiready GaAs(001) n-type wafers by molecular beam epitaxy. The crystal structure of the NW was determined to be zinc-blende. NW with Mn concentrations lower than 5 at% grow along the > direction. NW with higher Mn concentrations

Seeking a usable methodology: The production of the fin-de-siecle female prostitute

The idea of a usable methodology, one which will both retain the idea of 'a subject' at the heart of research and also recognize that in historical research the researcher necessarily has to work with textual remains, is discussed. Piecing this together is explored in relation to researching correspondences and other archival materials relating to two women who were fin de siecle prostitutes and a

Flotation as a tool for indirect DNA extraction from soil

Nowadays, soil diversity is accessed at molecular level by the total DNA extraction of a given habitat. However, high DNA yields and purity are difficult to achieve due to the co-extraction of enzyme-inhibitory substances that inhibit downstream applications, such as PCR, restriction enzyme digestion, and DNA ligation. Therefore, there is a need for further development of sample preparation method

Pulsed electric field in combination with vacuum impregnation with trehalose improves the freezing tolerance of spinach leaves

Pulsed electric fields in combination with vacuum infusion have been utilized to impregnate cells with trehalose, aiming at substantially improving the freezing tolerance of spinach leaves. Spinach samples were first treated with ten trains of bi-polar, rectangular electric field pulses with a nominal electric field strength of 580 V/cm and immediately immersed in a 40% (w/w) solution of trehalose

A prospective study of Helicobacter pylori in relation to the risk for pancreatic cancer

Background: The relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and pancreatic cancer has been investigated in three previous studies with contradictory results. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between H. pylori seropositivity and the risk for pancreatic cancer in a nested case-control study within a population based cohort. Methods: Selected birth- year cohorts

A low-energy electron microscopy and x-ray photo-emission electron microscopy study of Li intercalated into graphene on SiC(0001)

The effects induced by the deposition of Li on 1 and 0 ML graphene grown on SiC(0001) and after subsequent heating were investigated using low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) and x-ray photo-emission electron microscopy (XPEEM). For 1 ML samples, the collected photoelectron angular distribution patterns showed the presence of single pi-cones at the six equivalent K-points in the Brillouin zone b
