How to Explore the Original through Its Copies. On Modern Furniture Classics in Contemporary Sweden.

Within the realm of furniture is the copy a controversial subject matter and is often discussed in terms of “real or fake”, “copy or original”. Walter Benjamin was probably the first theorist to pay attention to the power of the copy, in terms of changing our social and cultural attitudes towards the nature of representation with his Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit

InGaAs nanowire MOSFETs with ION = 555 μa/μm at IOFF = 100 nA/μm and VDD = 0.5 v

We report on In0.85Ga0.15As nanowire MOSFETs (NWFETs) with record performance in several key VLSI metrics. These devices exhibit ION = 555 μA/μm (at IOFF = 100 nA/μm and VDD = 0.5 V), ION = 365 μA/μm (at IOFF = 10 nA/μm and VDD = 0.5 V) and a quality factor Q = gm/SS of 40, all of which are the highest reported for a III-V as well as silicon transistor. Furthermore, a highly scalable, self-Aligned

Recent hip fracture trends in Sweden and Denmark with age-period-cohort effects

Summary: This study used nationwide hip fracture data from Denmark and Sweden during 1987–2010 to examine effects of (birth) cohort and period. We found that time trends, cohort, and period effects were different in the two countries. Results also indicated that hip fracture rates may increase in the not so far future. Introduction: The reasons for the downturn in hip fracture rates remain largely

Pain, Function, and Dissatisfaction after Total knee Arthroplasty

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative joint disorder, and the prevalence increases with age. In Sweden, about one in 4 people over the age of 45 years has OA in at least one joint. As the population ages and the prevalence of obesity increases, OA is expected to increase even more. The knee joint is one of the most commonly affected joints. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the most com

Impacts of land-use history on the recovery of ecosystems after agricultural abandonment

Land-use changes have been shown to have large effects on climate and biogeochemical cycles, but so far most studies have focused on the effects of conversion of natural vegetation to croplands and pastures. By contrast, relatively little is known about the long-term influence of past agriculture on vegetation regrowth and carbon sequestration following land abandonment. We used the LPJ-GUESS dyna

(Un)becoming dysfunctional: ADHD and how matter comes to matter

Various neuropsychiatric disorders are a common feature today, not leastin educational contexts where Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder(ADHD) is a common diagnosis. The dominant perspective regardingADHD is biomedical. This perspective has been questioned andchallenged in various ways. A systems analysis of biodiesel production from wheat straw using oleaginous yeast : process design, mass and energy balances

Background: Biodiesel is the main liquid biofuel in the EU and is currently mainly produced from vegetable oils. Alternative feedstocks are lignocellulosic materials, which provide several benefits compared with many existing feedstocks. This study examined a technical process and its mass and energy balances to gain a systems perspective of combined biodiesel (FAME) and biogas production from str

Required temporal resolution for accurate thoracic aortic pulse wave velocity measurements by phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging and comparison with clinical standard applanation tonometry : Cardiovascular Spring Meeting

Background: Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a biomarker for arterial stiffness, clinically assessed by applanation tonometry (AT). Increased use of phase-contrast cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging allows for PWV assessment with minor routine protocol additions. The aims were to investigate the acquired temporal resolution needed for accurate and precise measurements of CMR-PWV, and develop a t

Self-Care for Common Colds by Primary Care Patients : A European Multicenter Survey on the Prevalence and Patterns of Practices - The COCO Study

Background. Patients use self-care to relieve symptoms of common colds, yet little is known about the prevalence and patterns across Europe. Methods/Design. In a cross-sectional study 27 primary care practices from 14 countries distributed 120 questionnaires to consecutive patients (≥18 years, any reason for consultation). A 27-item questionnaire asked for patients' self-care for their last common

How It All Relates : Exploring the Space of Value Comparisons

This thesis explores whether the three standard value relations, “better than”, “worse than” and “equally as good”, exhaust the possibilities in which things can relate with respect to their value. Or more precisely, whether there are examples in which one of these relations is not instantiated. There are cases in which it is not obvious that one of these relations does obtain; these are referred

Measurements of Some Characteristics of Thermal Radiation in a 400-kW Grate-Fired Furnace Combusting Biomass

A comprehensive experimental investigation relevant to thermal radiation has been performed in a grate-fired test furnace. Thermal radiation is the dominating mode of heat transfer in the grate-fired furnace and yet only a few studies have focused on thermal radiation. No previous works, to the authors' knowledge, have been carried out concerning measurements on radiative heat transfer in grate-fi

Laboratory-scale assessment of vacuum-degassed activated sludge for improved settling properties

Vacuum degassing of activated sludge was tested at eight different Swedish wastewater treatment plants with laboratory-scale equipment in batch mode in order to evaluate its efficiency on improvement of sludge compaction and settling properties. The results show that the efficiency of the degassing technique is mainly dependent on the initial sludge volume index (SVI) of the target sludge which wa

Neutrophil extracellular traps - The dark side of neutrophils

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) were discovered as extracellular strands of decondensed DNA in complex with histones and granule proteins, which were expelled from dying neutrophils to ensnare and kill microbes. NETs are formed during infection in vivo by mechanisms different from those originally described in vitro. Citrullination of histones by peptidyl arginine deiminase 4 (PAD4) is centr

The presence of a short redox chain in the membrane of intact potato tuber peroxisomes and the association of malate dehydrogenase with the peroxisomal membrane

Peroxisomes and mitochondria were purified from potato tubers (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Bintje) by differential centrifugation followed by separation on a continuous Percoll gradient containing 0.3 M sucrose in the lower half and 0.3 M mannitol in the upper half. The peroxisomes band at the bottom and the mitochondria in the middle of this type of gradient. Mitochondrial contamination of the perox

Inflamed in vitro retina : Cytotoxic neuroinflammation and galectin-3 expression

Background Disease progression in retinal neurodegeneration is strongly correlated to immune cell activation, which may have either a neuroprotective or neurotoxic effect. Increased knowledge about the immune response profile and retinal neurodegeneration may lead to candidate targets for treatments. Therefore, we have used the explanted retina as a model to explore the immune response and express

Transmitter-specific subsets of sensory elements in the prosobranch osphradium.

The osphradium is a putative chemosensory organ of aquatic molluscs. Previously, we identified two distinct types of primary sensory neurons in the osphradial ganglion of freshwater pulmonates, one immunoreactive to leucine-enkephalin (LEnk-ir) and another to FMRFamide (FMRFa-ir). In addition, NADPH diaphorase (NADPHd)-positive elements apparently producing nitric oxide (NO) were demonstrated in t
