Coupled Impacts of Atmospheric Circulation and Sea-Ice on Late Pleistocene Terrigenous Sediment Dynamics in the Subarctic Pacific Ocean

Processes controlling environmental change in the subarctic Pacific Ocean on millennial to orbital timescales are not well understood. Here we use a 230-kyr sedimentary record from the northwest Pacific Ocean to assess the response of late Pleistocene sediment dynamics to orbital forcing. Combining a source-to-sink perspective based on sedimentological records with climate model reanalysis, we rev

Match-Fixing Causing Harm to Athletes on a COVID-19-Influenced Gambling Market : A Call for Research During the Pandemic and Beyond

Match-fixing, although not a new problem, has received growing attention during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been reported in the media to have increased the risk of match-fixing events. Gambling is a well-documented addictive behavior, and gambling-related fraud, match-fixing, is a challenge to the world of sports. Most research on match-fixing has a judicial or institutional perspective, and

Production of an amino acid sequence-specific antiserum against human amyloid A (AA) and serum amyloid A (SAA) protein

The hydrophilic nonapeptide Ser-Asp-Ala-Arg-Glu-Asn-Ile-Gln-Arg, identical with residues 59-67 of human amyloid protein A (AA) and serum amyloid protein A (SAA), was covalently bound via its carboxyl-terminal end to the carrier-protein keyhole limpet haemocyanin. The complex was injected subcutaneously into ten rabbits. All rabbits produced antisera which, unabsorbed, were specific for AA and SAA.

What Happened to the Incomes of the Rich during the Great Levelling? Evidence from Swedish Individual-level Data, 1909–1950

Much of the income equalization that took place during the first half of the twentieth century was driven by shifts in the shares of the incomes of the rich, such as the top 1 percent. But the available studies using tabulated data have not been wholly able to account for the relative decline in top earners’ incomes. In this paper, we present the first evidence on the composition of the top groups

Operando Stability Studies of Ultrathin Single-Crystalline IrO2(110) Films under Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction Conditions

The anodic corrosion behavior of 50 Å thick single-crystalline IrO2(110) films supported on slightly bulk-reduced TiO2(110) single crystals is studied during acidic water splitting by a unique combination of operando techniques, namely, synchrotron-based high-energy X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and surface X-ray diffraction (SXRD) together with highly sensitive inductively coupled plasma mass spectrom

Isolation and characterization of a tumor necrosis factor binding protein from urine

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)/cachectin can produce both beneficial and harmful manifestations. Mechanisms may operate to counteract potentially harmful effects such as shock and cachexia. The TNF binding protein (TNF-BP), which is found at increased levels in serum and urine of patients with chronic renal failure, may play such a role. TNF-BP was purified 1,000,000-fold to homogeneity from urine of

The Rich Kids of Instagram : Luxury Travel, Transport Modes, and Desire

The Rich Kids of Instagram (RKOI) portray luxury lifestyles on social media. The potential roles of travel and transport within these online displays of affluence have not yet been examined. This paper’s purpose is to analyse how transport modes and luxury travel are depicted and interrelated through RKOI images. Co-occurrence analyses were conducted using a data set of Instagram posts with RKOI a

Varför smörgåsar och inte smörgäss? Om problemet med oregelbunden plural i sammansättningar

The plural -ar in smörgåsar for smörgås ‘sandwich’ is regular – even though gås ‘goose’, here used as a simplex, takes an irregular plural, gäss ‘geese’. Why is the form smörgäss not used? Similarly, for trefot, lit. three foot, ‘tripod’, neither trefotar nor the irregular trefötter seems right. To use an irregular plural in such compounds tends to evoke a core reading (“kärnbetydelse”) of the rig

Human- Versus Machine Learning-Based Triage Using Digitalized Patient Histories in Primary Care : Comparative Study

BACKGROUND: Smartphones have made it possible for patients to digitally report symptoms before physical primary care visits. Using machine learning (ML), these data offer an opportunity to support decisions about the appropriate level of care (triage).OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore the interrater reliability between human physicians and an automated ML-based triage method.METH

Accounting for forest management in the estimation of forest carbon balance using the dynamic vegetation model LPJ-GUESS (v4.0, r9710) : Implementation and evaluation of simulations for Europe

Global forests are the main component of the land carbon sink, which acts as a partial buffer to CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Dynamic vegetation models offer an approach to projecting the development of forest carbon sink capacity in a future climate. Forest management capabilities are important to include in dynamic vegetation models to account for the effects of age and species structure a

Location and characterization of the three carbohydrate prosthetic groups of human protein HC

Three different carbohydrate prosthetic groups associated to three chymotryptic peptides, Q1, Q2 and Q3, were isolated from the reduced and carboxymethylated human protein HC. The first oligosaccharide forms an O-glycosidic linkage with a threonine residue at position 5 in the polypeptide chain of protein HC. The second and third carbohydrate prosthetic groups form N-linkages with asparagine resid

Urea and lactate determined in 1-μL whole-blood samples with a miniaturized thermal biosensor

A miniaturized flow-injected thermal biosensor was developed for the determination of urea and L-lactate in undiluted blood in 1-μL samples. The sensor employed a small enzyme column constructed of stainless steel tubing and microbead thermistors. Urease and lactate oxidase/catalase were separately immobilized onto controlled-pore glass beads, which, in turn, were charged into the enzyme column. W

Fast determination of whole blood glucose with a calorimetric micro-biosensor

Fast determination of whole blood glucose without any pretreatment was achieved using a calorimetric FIA micro-biosensor. Glucose oxidase was covalently immobilized, together with catalase, onto controlled pore glass beads and packed into a micro-column. By reducing the sample volume down to 1 μ1, a measurement period of about 40 s and an enlarged linear range of 0.5-20 mM glucose were obtained. T

The association between circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D metabolites and type 2 diabetes in European populations: A meta-analysis and Mendelian randomisation analysis

Background Prior research suggested a differential association of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) metabolites with type 2 diabetes (T2D), with total 25(OH)D and 25(OH)D3 inversely associated with T2D, but the epimeric form (C3-epi-25(OH)D3) positively associated with T2D. Whether or not these observational associations are causal remains uncertain. We aimed to examine the potential causality of thes

A series of experimental measurements on a prototype premixed swirl burner with complex geometry were carried out using CH2O/OH-PLIF. FGM method(SFGM)taking account of strain rate was developed to study two modes of premixed swirl flame, one stabilized and the other close to blown-off flame under the same Reynolds number(Re=10000). The SFGM model in this work is related to a reaction factor, which

Accelerated landings in stingless bees are triggered by visual threshold cues

Most flying animals rely primarily on visual cues to coordinate and control their trajectory when landing. Studies of visually guided landing typically involve animals that decrease their speed before touchdown. Here, we investigate the control strategy of the stingless bee Scaptotrigona depilis, which instead accelerates when landing on its narrow hive entrance. By presenting artificial targets t

Identification of retinol as one of the protein HC chromophores

Protein HC (alias alpha 1-microglobulin) contains so far unidentified yellow-brown fluorescent chromophores. Several preparations of human protein HC were extracted with hexane. Most of the extracts contained a substance which, upon reversed-phase HPLC, co-eluted with all-trans- retinol and had an absorption spectrum identical to that of retinol. The substance was also, like retinol, destroyed by

Bladder cancer recurrence in papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential (PUNLMP) compared to G1 WHO 1999 : a population-based study

Objective: Papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential (PUNLMP) and stage TaG1 non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) represent separate categories in current WHO 1999 grade definitions. Similarly, PUNLMP and Ta low-grade are separate entities in the WHO 2004/2016 grading system. However, this classification is currently questioned by reports showing a similar risk of recurrence a
