Changes in forest bird abundance, community structure and composition following a hurricane in Sweden
The effect that extreme natural events have on biological diversity is relatively poorly known. We used a before–after control-impact (BACI) design to analyze changes in bird abundances and communities following Hurricane Gudrun, which struck southern Sweden in January 2005, felling 75 million m3 of forest and causing damage to 5% of forested areas (half a million hectares) in a few hours. We used
A Synthesis of Determinants of Urban Resilience in Sub-Saharan Africa
Urban resilience to natural and human-induced shocks and stresses has become an important issue in the contemporary world. Several reviews exist on urban resilience, but limited attempts have been made to critically review studies that shed light on determinants of urban resilience in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study synthesizes both peer-reviewed and grey literature on the determinants of urb

A new retrieval algorithm for soil moisture index from thermal infrared sensor on-board geostationary satellites over Europe and Africa and its validation
Monitoring soil moisture at the Earth'surface is of great importance for drought early warnings. Spaceborne remote sensing is a keystone in monitoring at continental scale, as satellites can make observations of locations which are scarcely monitored by ground-based techniques. In recent years, several soil moisture products for continental scale monitoring became available from the main space age

A registry-based study evaluating overall survival and treatment duration in Swedish patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer treated with enzalutamide
Objective: This retrospective, single-centre, non-interventional, registry-based study evaluated patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) treated with enzalutamide in daily clinical practice at Skåne University Hospital, Malmö, Sweden. Materials and methods: Registry data were reviewed for patients treated with enzalutamide pre- or post-chemotherapy initiated between D
The Lysine Demethylase KDM5B Regulates Islet Function and Glucose Homeostasis
Aims: Posttranslational modifications of histones and transcription factors regulate gene expression and are implicated in beta-cell failure and diabetes. We have recently shown that preserving H3K27 and H3K4 methylation using the lysine demethylase inhibitor GSK-J4 reduces cytokine-induced destruction of beta-cells and improves beta-cell function. Here, we investigate the therapeutic potential of
Multi-modal and multiscale imaging approaches reveal novel cardiovascular pathophysiology in Drosophila melanogaster
Establishing connections between changes in linear DNA sequences and complex downstream mesoscopic pathology remains a major challenge in biology. Herein, we report a novel, multi-modal and multiscale imaging approach for comprehensive assessment of cardiovascular physiology in Drosophila melanogaster. We employed high-speed angiography, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and confocal microscopy t
Uncompromised MRI of knee cartilage while incorporating sensitive sodium MRI
Sodium imaging is able to assess changes in ion content, linked to glycosaminoglycan content, which is important to guide orthopeadic procedures such as articular cartilage repair. Sodium imaging is ideally performed using double tuned RF coils, to combine high resolution morphological imaging with biochemical information from sodium imaging to assess ion content. The proton image quality of such
Co-existing Notions of Research Quality: A Framework to Study Context-specific Understandings of Good Research
Notions of research quality are contextual in many respects: they vary between fields of research, between review contexts and between policy contexts. Yet, the role of these co-existing notions in research, and in research policy, is poorly understood. In this paper we offer a novel framework to study and understand research quality across three key dimensions. First, we distinguish between quali

Diffusion parameter correlations for PEFC gas diffusion layers considering the presence of a water-droplet
A polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) produces electrical energy according to the electrochemical reactions carried out inside the cell. During the energy conversion, water molecules are also produced at the cathode side, which affects the gas diffusion layer (GDL) diffusion parameters. The generated water-drops from the reaction may give partial or total blockage of the reactant gases and also m
The immune microenvironment of colorectal cancer - Relationship with survival, sidedness, and pre-diagnostic anthropometry
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide. Increasing evidence suggests that CRC should be considered a heterogeneous disease, with multiple differences between proximal and distal tumours. The immune system may, depending on the context, promote or inhibit tumour growth, and different immune cell subsets have been found to be associated with impaired or improved prognosis
Probiotics for intestinal decolonization of ESBL-producing enterobacteriaceae; a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial
OBJECTIVES: Infections with extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing Enterobacteriaceae (EPE) are a major healthcare concern. Our goal was to investigate whether a probiotic mixture could be used for eradication therapy in patients with prolonged intestinal EPE carriage.METHODS: We performed a randomized, placebo-controlled single blinded clinical superiority trial in the south of Sweden
More Power to the People: Electricity Adoption, Technological Change and Social Conflict
There is a wide-spread concern that technical change may spur social conflicts, especially if workers are replaced with machines. To empirically analyze whether job destruction drives protests, we study a historical example of a revolutionary new technology: the adoption of electricity. Focusing on the gradual roll-out of the Swedish electricity grid between 1900 and 1920 enables us to analyze 2,4
