Ultrasound prediction of large fetuses. Epidemiological and clinical investigations

The proportions of newborns with a birth weight (BW) >4,000 g and of macrosomic newborns (BW >4,500 g) have increased during the last two decades, parallel with an increasing maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and age at the time for pregnancy. Delivery of a large fetus, especially >4,500 g might cause perinatal complications for both the mother and her child. The aims of this work were

On the Analytical Representation of Chip Area and Tool Geometry when Oblique Turning with Round Tools. Part 2: Variation of Tool Geometry along the Edge Line

This paper presents the models, analytical equations and results of analysis for determination of major cutting edge, orthogonal and normal clearance and rake angles, and cutting edge inclination angle. The analysis is carried for variable side and back rake angles used by the tool manufacturers and a corresponding variation of the geometry along the edge line for the case of round tools. The infl

Societal costs of air pollution-related health hazards: a review of methods and results

This paper aims to provide a critical and systematic review of the societal costs of air pollutionrelated ill health (CAP), to explore methodological issues that may be important when assessing or comparing CAP across countries and to suggest ways in which future CAP studies can be made more useful for policy analysis. The methodology includes a systematic search based on the major electronic data

Probing the Wurtzite Conduction Band Structure Using State Filling in Highly Doped InP Nanowires.

We have grown InP nanowires doped with hydrogen sulfide, which exhibit sulfur concentrations of up to 1.4%. The highest doped nanowires show a pure wurtzite crystal structure, in contrast to bulk InP which has the zinc blende structure. The nanowires display photoluminescence which is strongly blue shifted compared with the band gap, well into the visible range. We find evidence of a second conduc

Prosthetic and Orthotic Services in Developing Countries

Popular Abstract in Swedish Ortopedteknik i utvecklings-länder, hur funkar det? Hennes avhandling beskriver patienters rAim: The overall aim of this thesis was to generate further knowledge about prosthetic and orthotic services in developing countries. In particular, the thesis focused on patient mobility and satisfaction with prosthetic and orthotic devices, satisfaction with service delivery, and the views of staff regarding clinical practice and education. Methods: Questionnaires, including QUEST 2.0, were use

Effects of Air Velocity and Clothing Combination on Heating Efficiency of an Electrically Heated Vest (EHV): A Pilot Study

Cold endangers the heat balance of the human body. Protective clothing is the natural and most common equipment against cold stress. However, clothing for cold protection may be bulky and heavy, affecting human performance and increasing the work load. In such cases, a heated garment with built-in heating elements may be helpful. This pilot study presents a method based on a thermal manikin to inv

A cost effective steam reformer for a distributed hydrogen infrastructure

In this paper the design and demonstration of a 7 nm(3) h(-1) integrated steam reforming based hydrogen production unit using a Fischer-Tropsch diesel is reported. The system design is discussed in detail, including the fuel processor itself as well as the hydrogen purification and results from stand-alone operation of the combined unit operations is reported. Further, the results of an integratio

Validation Of Delayed Gadolinium-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Of Cartilage And T2 Mapping For Quantifying Distal Metacarpus/Metatarsus Cartilage Thickness In Thoroughbred Racehorses

The purpose of this study was to determine whether delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage (dGEMRIC) and T2 mapping are accurate techniques for measuring cartilage thickness in the metacarpus3/metatarsus3 (Mc3/Mt3) of Thoroughbred racehorses. Twenty-four Mc3/Mt3 cadaver specimens were acquired from six healthy racehorses. Cartilage thickness was measured from postintra-

Physiological aspects of the glomerular filtration barrier

Proteinuria is associated with progression of kidney disease and is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The pathophysiological alterations resulting in proteinuria are obscure, although proteinuria is often associated with pathological changes in the glomerular filtration barrier (GFB). It is therefore of great interest to study the physiology of the GFB, in orde

Evidence for counting in insects

Here we investigate the counting ability in honeybees by training them to receive a food reward after they have passed a specific number of landmarks. The distance to the food reward is varied frequently and randomly, whilst keeping the number of intervening landmarks constant. Thus, the bees cannot identify the food reward in terms of its distance from the hive. We find that bees can count up to

A Square-Root-Free Matrix Decomposition Method for Energy-Efficient Least Squares Computation on Embedded Systems

QR decomposition (QRD) is used to solve least squares (LS) problems for a wide range of applications. However, traditional QR decomposition methods, such as Gram-Schmidt (GS), require high computational complexity and non-linear operations to achieve high throughput, limiting their usage on resource-limited platforms. To enable efficient LS computation on embedded systems for real-time application

Echoes from the Past: A Healthy Baltic Sea Requires More Effort

Integrated sediment multiproxy studies and modeling were used to reconstruct past changes in the Baltic Sea ecosystem. Results of natural changes over the past 6000 years in the Baltic Sea ecosystem suggest that forecasted climate warming might enhance environmental problems of the Baltic Sea. Integrated modeling and sediment proxy studies reveal increased sea surface temperatures and expanded sea

Representing evacuation behavior in engineering terms

In performance-based analyses, engineers evaluate whether a building design and/or evacuation procedure allows occupants sufficient time to evacuate before fire conditions become untenable. Guidance exists for the calculation of the time until conditions become untenable in areas of the structure (known as the available safe egress time) during fire situations. This article presents a method for d
