The influence of magnetic steps on bulk superconductivity

We study the distribution of bulk superconductivity in presence of an applied magnetic field, supposed to be a step function, modeled by the Ginzburg-Landau theory. Our results are valid for the minimizers of the twodimensional Ginzburg-Landau functional with a large Ginzburg-Landau parameter and with an applied magnetic field of intensity comparable with the Ginzburg-Landau parameter.

Sensitivity of VOF simulations of the liquid jet breakup to physical and numerical parameters

In this paper the characteristics of the primary breakup of a liquid jet is analyzed numerically. We applied the Volumes of Fluids (VOF) approach utilizing the Direction Averaged Curvature (DAC) model, to estimate the interface curvature, and the Direction Averaged Normal (DAN) model, to propagate the interface. While being used for the first time to predict liquid atomization, this methodology sh

A review on prediction models for full-scale fire behaviour of building products

This study aims to give an overview over different reaction-to-fire prediction models developed over the last decades by finding similarities and differences between models, as well as identifying their robustness in scaling. The models have been divided into four categories - empirical, thermal, polynomial and comprehensive - depending on how pyrolysis is modelled. Empirical models extrapolate be

Obtaining additional smoke characteristics using multi-wavelength light transmission measurements

The characteristics of smoke are highly dependent on the materials undergoing thermal decomposition and the environment in which this decomposition takes place. With the rising complexity in dedicated fire simulation tools, there is a need for increased information on the composition and properties of smoke in order to develop/validate and extend the fire safety engineering community's smoke and v

Noise-robust fixation detection in eye movement data : Identification by two-means clustering (I2MC)

Eye-tracking research in infants and older children has gained a lot of momentum over the last decades. Although eye-tracking research in these participant groups has become easier with the advance of the remote eye-tracker, this often comes at the cost of poorer data quality than in research with well-trained adults (Hessels, Andersson, Hooge, Nyström, & Kemner Infancy, 20, 601-633, 2015; Was

Notable plesiomorphies and notable specializations : Head structure of the primitive "tongue moth" Acanthopteroctetes unifascia (lepidoptera: Acanthopteroctetidae)

The Acanthopteroctetidae are one of the first-originated family-group lineages within "tongue moths" (Lepidoptera-Glossata). The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive account (based on whole mount preparations, serial sections, and Scanning electron microscopy) of the cephalic structure of an adult exemplar of the family, to supplement the sparse available information. Notable plesio

Choreutidae of Madeira : Review of the known species and description of the male of Anthophila threnodes (Walsingham, 1910) (Lepidoptera)

We review and illustrate the four species of Choreutidae recorded from Madeira - Anthophila threnodes (Walsingham), A. fabriciana (Linnaeus), Choreutis nemorana (Hubner), and Tebenna micalis (Mann) - and describe and illustrate for the first time the male of A. threnodes, as well as the biology of this Madeiran endemic. We provide brief notes on each of the species and give short diagnoses for cor

Larva of Abablemma (Noctuidae) with notes on algivory and lichenivory in Macrolepidoptera

The larva of Abablemma brimleyana (Dyar) (Noctuidae) is described and illustrated based on ex ova larvae reared on green algae (Protococcus viridis). A last instar Abablemma duomaculata (Barnes & Benjamin), collected from and reared on Physcia, a foliose lichen, and its lichen-encrusted cocoon, as well as a last instar Nigetia formosalis Walker ex ova reared on Protococcus, also are figured. B

Comparison of Laser-Extinction and Natural Luminosity Measurements for Soot Probing in Diesel Optical Engines

Soot emissions from diesel internal combustion engines are strictly regulated nowadays. Laser extinction measurement (LEM) and natural luminosity (NL) of sooty flames are commonly applied to study soot. LEM measures soot along the laser beam path and it can probe soot regardless of temperature. NL integrates the whole field of view and relies on soot temperature. In this work, a comparison of simu

Core level shifts of intercalated graphene

Through intercalation of metals and gases the Dirac cone of graphene on Ir(111) can be shifted with respect to the Fermi level without becoming destroyed by strong hybridization. Here, we use x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to measure the C 1s core level shift (CLS) of graphene in contact with a number of structurally well-defined intercalation layers (O, H, Eu, and Cs). By analysis of our own an

Sensory morphology in the antennae of the cephalocarid Hutchinsoniella macracantha (Crustacea)

The first antenna of Hutchinsoniella macracantha is a 6-segmented, uniramous appendage carrying 1 aesthetasc and 22 setae (or sensilla). The second antenna is biramous and has approximately 80 setae. The sensory cells of the first antenna are arranged in 3 clusters in the first and second segments; one cluster serving the aesthetasc (approximately 130 cells), one the 11 setae of the sixth segment

Data partitioning in Bayesian analysis : Molecular phylogenetics of metalmark moths (Lepidoptera: Choreutidae)

In this study a multilocus phylogenetic analysis of metalmark moths (Lepidoptera: Choreutidae) focused on resolving the higher-level phylogeny of this group is presented. Through the analysis of this dataset, I explore different data-partitioning strategies in Bayesian phylogenetic inference, and find that a partitioning strategy can have a large influence on the results of phylogenetic analysis.

A new genus and new species of metalmark moths (Lepidoptera : Choreutidae) from Costa Rica

Alasea, new genus, is described and illustrated. As currently defined, Alasea is monotypic with the single species A. corniculata, n. sp., from Heredia, Limón, and Puntarenas provinces in Costa Rica. The new genus is assigned to the subfamily Choreutinae based on morphological and molecular data. As in other choreutines, Alasea has a bluntly pointed forewing and hindwing (in Brenthiinae the wings

Reduced occurrence of severe visual impairment after introduction of anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in wet age-related macular degeneration – a population- and register-based study from northern Sweden

Purpose: To study the occurrence of severe visual impairment (SVI) and treatment outcome at 12 months in patients treated for wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by use of data from the Swedish Macula Register (SMR) and referrals to the regional low vision clinics in five northern counties. Methods: Referrals to low vision clinics during 2005, 2009 and 2013 and treatment outcome at 12 month

Jesus for Zanzibar : Narratives of Pentecostal Belonging, Islam, and Nation

This study addresses the presence of religious difference in the Muslim-dominated cultural setting of Zanzibar, a context in which, in 2012, Christian minorities became targets in violent events directed against representations of the politically contested Union with Mainland Tanzania. As the attacked churches are primarily attended by people of non-island origins and the incidents were blamed on

Institutional conditions for integrated mobility services (IMS) : Towards a framework for analysis

The present text is a theoretical framework that has been developed with the aim to generate knowledge of and policy recommendations for the promotion of integrated mobility services (IMS), with specific regard to institutional dimensions. Integrated mobility services are services where the passenger’s transport needs are met by a service that not only integrates a range of mobility services, both

Neurons against Noise : Neural adaptations for dim light vision in hawkmoths

I denna avhandling undersökte jag synsystemets anpassningar hosAll animals perceive the world through their senses, which form the basis for their decisions and motor actions. However, when these all-important senses reach their limit and cease to provide reliable information, the animal’s survival is threatened. Among the senses, vision is brought to its limits on a daily basis, because its signal strength is diminished as night falls, and increases again as

Ambulanssjukvården måste bli jämlik
