Synthesis of podoscyphic acid

Podoscyphic acid 1, a fungal metabolite inhibiting RNA-directed DNA polymerises, was synthesised in four steps starting from dodecanal. The concluding ester hydrolysis of 4 was not feasible with chemical reagents, only enzymatic hydrolysis was mild enough to release the highly reactive natural product in good yields. Clinical pharmacology of thalidomide

Background: Thalidomide has a chiral centre, and the racemate of (R)- and (S)-thalidomide was introduced as a sedative drug in the late 1950s. In 1961, it was withdrawn due to teratogenicity and neuropathy. There is now a growing clinical interest in thalidomide due to its unique anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. Objective: To critically review pharmacokinetic studies and briefly rev

Association testing of the protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B gene (PTPN1) with type 2 diabetes in 7,883 people

Protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP)-1B, encoded by the PTPN1 gene, inactivates the insulin signal transduction cascade by dephosphorylating phosphotyrosine residues in insulin signaling molecules. Due to its chromosomal location under a chromosome 20 linkage peak and the metabolic effects of its absence in knockout mice, it is a candidate gene for type 2 diabetes. Recent studies have associated com

Distributed Clocking and Clock Generation in Digital CMOS SoC ASICs

With shrinking technologies and higher clock rates comes the possibility to transform multi chip implementations to a single System on Chip (SoC). Implementing clock distribution and limiting the power consumption becomes increasingly troublesome with increased clock rate and chip area. Therefore, designing large Systems on Chip makes it necessary to search for new implementation methods. In this

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of enzyme-hydrolysed carboxymethylcellulose for investigation of enzyme selectivity and substituent pattern

A series of celloendoglucanases: Bacillus agaradhaerens Cel 5a, Humicola insolens Cel 5a, H. insolens Cel 7b, H. insolens Cel 45a, Trichoderma reesei Cel 7b, and T reesei Cel 45a were used to hydrolyse carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and the hydrolysis products were investigated with a novel liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method. Separation was achieved using a graphitised carbon chr

Reactions of [(mu-H)Os-3(CO)(10)(mu-OMe)] and [(mu-H)Os-3(CO)9(mu-OMe)(MeCN)] with dppm, dppe, dppp, and PPh2H: X-ray crystal structures of [(mu-H)Os-3(CO)8(mu-OMe)-(mu(2)-eta(2)-dppm)] and [(mu-H)Os-3(CO)(9)(mu-OMe)(PPh2H)]

Treatment of [(mu-H)Os-3(CO)(10)(mu-OMe)] (1) with dppm {dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane} at 110 degrees C gave the known compound [Os-3(CO)(10)(mu(2)-eta(2)-dppm)] (2) and the new compound [(mu-H)Os-3(CO)(8)(mu-OMe)(mu(2)-eta(2)-dppm)] (3). A similar reaction of 1 with dppe {dppe=bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane} afforded two products, [(mu-H)Os-3(CO)(8)(mu-OMe)(mu(1)-eta(2)-dppe)] (5) and [(mu-

Laser-induced fluorescence used in localizing atherosclerotic lesions

We have investigated laser-induced fluorescence frompost mortem human arteries in order to find spectroscopic properties allowing discrimination between normal and atherosclerotic vessel wall. A pulsed nitrogen laser emitting light at a wavelength of 337.1 nm was used as an excitation source. The fluorescence spectrum from 370 to 700 nm was captured and analysed by an optical multichannel analyser

Transnational Party Alliances : Analysing the Hard-Won Alliance Between Conservatives and Christian Democrats in the European Parliament

This study examines processes of transnational alliance-building among political parties in the European Union (EU). It is associated with theories of transnational relations, neofunctionalist integration theory and domestic politics approaches to international co-operation and integration. The overall aim of the study is to contribute to the understanding and growth of knowledge of transnational

Under 1920-40-talen var hon en känd och diskuterad författare, men med tiden har henneThe aim of this thesis is to present and discuss the author Gertrud Lilja with a special focus on her relationship to modernity from a feminist perspective. In the 1920s Lilja was regarded as an interesting and promising author. Ten years later she was seen as a conservative and popular author who wrote mainly for women. As this is the first published thesis that discusses Gertrud Lilja it focuses

Vertical dislocation of the C1 and C2 vertebrae in rheumatoid arthritis

In a retrospective analysis of 450 patients with rheumatoid arthritis the cervical films were reviewed to detect vertical dislocation of the C1 and C2 vertebrae. A frequency of 10 per cent was found among all patients and of 24 per cent among those with cervical arthritis. The authors' method of measuring vertical dislocation at conventional radiography turned out to be superior to the method of M

The use of intravascular ultrasound as control procedure for the deployment of endovascular stented grafts

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), used systematically in a series of patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), is a feasible control procedure to ensure correct transfemoral placement of endovascular stent grafts (TPEG). DESIGN: Descriptive study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen patients with infrarenal aortic aneurysms were treated by the placement of one tube gr

Hand Mobility in Scleroderma (HAMIS) test: the reliability of a novel hand function test.

Objective Hand Mobility in Scleroderma (HAMIS) is a new hand function test developed for adults who have systemic sclerosis. HAMIS consists of 9 items designed to measure all movements assessed in an ordinary range of motion (ROM)-measured hand test. The aim of this study was to examine the reliability of the test. Methods Two observers (one occupational therapist and one physiotherapist) perform

Study of Na-19 at SPIRAL

The excitation function for the elastic-scattering reaction p( 18Ne, p) 18Ne was measured with the first radioactive beam from the SPIRAL facility at the GANIL laboratory and with a solid cryogenic hydrogen target. Several broad resonances have been observed, corresponding to new excited states in the unbound nucleus 19Na. In addition, two-proton emission events have been identified and are discus

Embryonic Stem Cells: Differentiation into Insulin Producing Cells and Elimination of Damaged Proteins

Popular Abstract in Swedish This thesis includes two different parts: One focusing on how to induce human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) to differentiate into insulin producing cells by following the normal pancreatic development pathway. These cells have then the potential to be an unlimited source for diabetes regenerative medicine. The second part of the thesis deals with how embryonic stem cellsThis thesis includes two different parts: One focusing on how to induce human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) to differentiate into insulin producing cells by following the normal pancreatic development pathway.
