Discrete-Time Trials for Tuning without a Model

Given a static plant described by a differentiable input-output function, which is completely unknown, but whose Jacobian takes values in a known polytope in the matrix space, we consider the problem of tuning the output (i.e., driving the output to a desired value), by suitably choosing the input. To this aim, we assume to have at our disposal a discrete sequence of trials only, as it happens, fo

Metabolism of chylomicron phosphatidylethanolamine in the rat

10 min after intravenous injection of 32P-labelled chylomicrons 69% of the [32P]phosphatidylethanolamine, but only 34% of the [32P]phosphatidylcholine, was cleared from plasma. Over this time period the plasma phosphatidylethanolamine concentration that was increased after the chylomicron injection returned to normal, indicating that the rapid clearance of [32P]phosphatidylethanolamine was primari

Evaluation of zinc status in subjects with Crohn's disease

Zinc status was evaluated in 30 subjects with Crohn's disease. Intestinal resection had previously been performed in 23 of the subjects. The concentrations of zinc were determined in plasma, erythrocytes, percutaneous muscle biopsies, and in urine collected during 24 hours. The results were compared with those in 19 healthy controls. Most of the patients had a normal zinc status. The levels of zinZinc status was evaluated in 30 subjects with Crohn's disease. Clinical outcome and long-term survival rates after esophagectomy are not determined by age over 70 years

Esophagectomy is considered a high-risk procedure in patients aged 70 years or older. This study evaluates the impact of two age groups (younger than 70 and 70 years or older) on clinical outcome and long-term survival rates following this procedure. This prospective study included survival analysis and clinical evaluations at 3, 6, and 12 months after esophagectomy. All esophagectomy patients und

Spatiotemporal coupling of attosecond pulses

The shortest light pulses produced to date are of the order of a few tens of attoseconds, with central frequencies in the extreme UV range and bandwidths exceeding tens of electronvolts. They are often produced as a train of pulses separated by half the driving laser period, leading in the frequency domain to a spectrum of high, odd-order harmonics. As light pulses become shorter and more spectral

Effect of ciprofloxacin on human lymphocytes - Laboratory studies

4-Quinolones affect mammalian cellular functions in vitro in several ways. Inhibition of cell proliferation differ widely among 4-quinolones. Ciprofloxacin is one of the most antiproliferative inhibiting cell growth with about 30% at 20 mg/l. Genotoxocity tests with 4-quinolones are probably 'false' positive due to an increased [3H]-thymidine uptake not related to DNA damage. Ciprofloxacin at 10 m

Selective enhancement of synthesis of interleukin-2 in lymphocytes in the presence of ciprofloxacin

A study was performed to verify the effect of ciprofloxacin on the production of interleukin-2 and other cytokines in cultures of human peripheral lymphocytes. In the presence of ciprofloxacin, lymphocytes demonstrated increased synthesis of interleukin-2 (100-fold, 7-fold and 1.5-fold increase at ciprofloxacin concentrations of 80, 20 and 5 μg/ml respectively), as measured by radioimmunoassay. Sy

Successful treatment of fulminant hepatitis B and fulminant hepatitis B and D coinfection explained by inhibitory effect on the immune response?

Foscarnet has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of human T and B lymphocytes in vitro. The production of lymphokines was more strongly affected than the DNA synthesis. Monocyte function was only partly inhibited by the highest foscarnet concentration tried. The influence of foscarnet on the immune system could explain the beneficial effect observed in patients with HBV-related fulminant hepa

Essays in Empirical Labor Economics

This thesis contributes to empirical research in labor economics. It consists of three self-contained papers. The first paper, The Effect of Paid Vacation on Health: Evidence from Sweden, analyzes the causal effect of paid vacation on health. Using register data on the universe of central government employees in Sweden, I exploit an age-based rule stipulated in the collective agreement covering the

Transmission dynamics study of tuberculosis isolates with whole genome sequencing in southern Sweden

Epidemiological contact tracing complemented with genotyping of clinical Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates is important for understanding disease transmission. In Sweden, tuberculosis (TB) is mostly reported in migrant and homeless where epidemiologic contact tracing could pose a problem. This study compared epidemiologic linking with genotyping in a low burden country. Mycobacterium tuberculosi

LINE-2 transposable elements are a source of functional human microRNAs and target sites

Transposable elements (TEs) are dynamically expressed at high levels in multiple human tissues, but the function of TE-derived transcripts remains largely unknown. In this study, we identify numerous TE-derived microRNAs (miRNAs) by conducting Argonaute2 RNA immunoprecipitation followed by small RNA sequencing (AGO2 RIP-seq) on human brain tissue. Many of these miRNAs originated from LINE-2 (L2) e

Cd13-xinySb10 (x≈ 2.7, y≈1.5) : An interstitial-free variant of thermoelectric ß-Zn 4Sb3

Cd13-x;In7Sb10 (x≈2.7, Y≈ 1.5) was synthesized in the form of millsized crystals from reaction mixtures containing excess cadmium. The intermetallic compound crystallizes in the rhombohedral space group R3m with α = 12.9704(4), c= 12.9443(5) Å, V= 1886.0(1) Å3, Z=3 and is isostructural to thermoelectric ß-Zn 4Sb3 and ßCd4Sb3. However, in contrast to these last two compounds Cd13-xInySb 10 is free

A new compound in the Cu-In system - The synthesis and structure of Cu 10In7

A new binary phase, Cu10In7, was found during the investigation of the η?-phase field in the Cu-In system. Single crystals of Cu10In7 were grown from a melt under an inert atmosphere. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/m with cell parameters a = 13.8453(2)A ° , b = 11.8462(1)A ° , c = 6.7388(1)A ° and ?β = 91.063(1). The structure is based on a unit of face-sharing octahedr
