Amble FR, Lindberg SOH, McCaffrey TV, Runer T. Mucociliary function and endothelins 1, 2, and 3. Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 1993;109:634-45.

Endothelins are recently discovered peptides that cause vasoconstriction and bronchoconstriction. The significance to the mucociliary system of endothelins (ET) 1, 2 and 3 in upper as well as lower airways has not yet been clarified. Effects of these active peptides were investigated, combining both in vitro and in vivo rabbit models of mucociliary activity from the maxillary sinus and the trachea

On the shape and duration of FM clicks

The stochastic behavior of FM-clicks in an unmodulated carrier plus noise is studied in terms of the conditional behavior of stationary Gaussian processes after level crossings. By a systematic use of thc Slepian model processes it is shown that the normalized shape of a positive FM-click approaches a certain rational function with simple random coefficients as the carrier-to-noise ratio tends to

Suboptimal dynamic programming with error bounds

This paper presents a method to relax Dynamic Programming. The methodmakes it possible to findsuboptimal solutions with known error bounds to hard problems. The bounds are chosen by the user, who can then effectively trade-offbetween solution time and accuracy. Several examples from differentdomains where the method is highly useful are presented.

Lack of HIN-1 methylation in BRCAl-linked and "BRCA1-like" breast tumors

We recently identified a candidate tumor suppressor gene, HIN-1, that is silenced due to methylation in the majority of sporadic breast carcinomas and is localized to 5q33-qter, an area frequently lost in BRCA1 tumors and thought to harbor a BRCA1 modifier gene. To establish whether germ-line mutations in HIN-1 may influence breast cancer risk, we sequenced the HIN-1 coding region in 10 familial b

Some ecophysiological and historical approaches to species richness and calcicole/calcifuge behaviour - Contribution to a debate

Species richness in vascular plants was related to the plants' calcifuge or calcicole behaviour using documentation from forests and open-land vegetation at about one thousand sites in the southern parts of Sweden. It is concluded that vegetation of strongly acid soils (pH-KCl < 4.5) have fewer vascular plant species than comparable vegetation of other soils, whereas there are no consistent differ

Islet antibodies and remaining beta-cell function 8 years after diagnosis of diabetes in young adults: a prospective follow-up of the nationwide Diabetes Incidence Study in Sweden.

Objectives. To establish the prevalence of remaining beta-cell function 8 years after diagnosis of diabetes in young adults and relate the findings to islet antibodies at diagnosis and 8 years later. Design. Population-based cohort study. Setting. Nationwide from all Departments of Medicine and Endocrinology in Sweden. Subjects. A total of 312 young (15-34 years old) adults diagnosed with diabe

Alternative techniques in trochanteric hip fracture surgery. Clinical and biomechanical studies on the Medoff sliding plate and the Twin hook.

Till dessa hör höftfrakturer, som utgör ett folkhälsoproblem och en stor utmaning för samhällets sjuvårdsIn allowing compression along the femoral shaft (uniaxial dynamization) and optional compression along the femoral neck (biaxial dynamization), the Medoff sliding plate (MSP) represents a new principle in the fixation of trochanteric hip fractures. The Twin hook with 2 apical hooks was designed as an alternative to the lag screw. In 3 prospective consecutive case series and 1 prospective randomize

Periarticular bone mineral content in rheumatoid arthritis and arthrosis of the hip. Dual photon X-ray absorptiometry in 53 cases

The bone mineral content (BMC) was determined by dual photon X-ray absorptiometry prior to hip replacement in 22 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 31 with arthrosis. Compared with the arthrosis patients, the rheumatoids had approximately 20 percent lower bone mineral content in the proximal femur, the lumbar spine, and in the innominate bone superior to the acetabulum.

Albatross long-distance navigation: Comparing adults and juveniles

Albatrosses are known for their extreme navigation performance enabling them to locate isolated breeding islands after long-distance migrations across open seas. Little is known about the migration of young albatrosses and how they reach the adults' navigation and foraging skills during the period of immaturity lasting several years and spent permanently flying across the open ocean. We tracked by

Growth and production of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) treated with reduced, ambient, and enhanced UV-B radiation

The effect of enhanced UV-B radiation on buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench. variety ‘Darja’), an important high elevation crop, was studied in order to estimate its vulnerability in changing UV-B environment. Plants were grown in outdoor experiments from July to October under reduced and ambient UV-B levels, and an UV-B level simulating 17% ozone depletion in Ljubljana. During the development

Normal visual fields as assessed by computerized static threshold perimetry in patients with untreated primary hypothyroidism

In this prospective study, 25 consecutive patients with untreated primary hypothyroidism were tested with a highly sensitive perimetric technique, since a high prevalence of visual field defects has been described in this condition. All patients had clinical hypothyroidism, a serum TSH value greater than 20 mU/l (reference range 0.4-4.0) and decreased/low normal serum total T4 concentration. Visua

Musical conception of abstract film - The case of Viking Eggeling's Diagonal Symphony

The idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk and the belief in the kinship of the arts were passed on from late romanticism to many of the modernist movements in the first decades of the twentieth century. Thus artists and film-makers wished to accomplish a fusion that transferred the achievements of non-figurative art to the new film medium, swayed by the constraints of realist story-telling. But abstract fil

Accumulations of T-points in a model for solitary pulses in an excitable reaction-diffusion medium

We consider a family of differential equations that describes traveling waves in a reaction-diffusion equation modeling oxidation of carbon oxide on a platinum surface, near the onset of spatio-temporal chaos. The organizing bifurcation for the bifurcation structure with small carbon oxide pressures, turns out to be a codimension 3 bifurcation involving a homoclinic orbit to an equilibrium undergo

Modeling Carbon and Water Fluxes in European Terrestrial Ecosystems

The controlling mechanisms and feedbacks between climate, the carbon and water cycling and vegetation in European ecosystems have attracted much attention in recent years but they are still not sufficiently understood. A better understanding of them is necessary to predict how they will be affected by climate change. Process-based models of ecosystem structure and functioning provide a tool to s
