Exception Handling in Recipe-Based Batch Control

The focus of this thesis is exception handling in recipe-based batch control. Exception handling is a critical element for achieving long-term success in batch production. It is reported to constitute 40-60 percent of the batch control design and implementation effort. Correct handling of exceptions is a key element in process safety, consistent product quality, and production cost minimization. T

Assessing the carbon balance of circumpolar Arctic tundra using remote sensing and process modeling

This paper reviews the current status of using remote sensing and process-based modeling approaches to assess the contemporary and future circumpolar carbon balance of Arctic tundra, including the exchange of both carbon dioxide and methane with the atmosphere. Analyses based on remote sensing approaches that use a 20-year data record of satellite data indicate that tundra is greening in the Arcti

Burden of illness, metabolic control, and complications in relation to depressive symptoms in IDDM patients

Relationships between demographic-, treatment-, and sickness-related factors, metabolic control (HbA1c), perceived burden of illness, and degree of depressive symptoms were examined in a group of 155 insulin-dependent diabetic patients, aged 35.3 +/- 8.9 years. The patients completed a questionnaire measuring depressive symptoms and three aspects of perceived burden of illness. No gender differenc

Preventive home visits to older people in southern Sweden

Background: It seems urgent to further develop and modify models of preventive measures in order to prolong a healthy functional and social situation for older people, as this population is increasing globally. The aim of the study was to describe a Swedish model of preventive home visits for persons aged 78 years with the focus on the effect on physical and social well-being, and the participants

Tissue expansion 1984-1999: A 15-year review.

We assessed all patients who underwent tissue expansion, excluding breast reconstructions, between 1984 and 1999. A total of 237 patients had 257 expansions, normally for distorted scars, 202 of 257 cases (79%). Their mean age was 27 (range 7- 67) years, most being women, 149 of 237 (63%). The mean duration of expansion was 16 weeks (range 0.4-118). The most common site was the skull (61/257). Pro

Using an Observer to Transform Linear Systems into Strictly Positive Real Systems

In this note, we study the extension of the class of linear time invariant plants that may be transformed into SPR systems introducing an observer. It is shown that for open loop stable systems a cascaded observer achieves the result. For open loop unstable systems an observer-based feedback is required to succeed. In general any stabilizable and observable system may be transformed into an SPR sy

Intrinsic and extrinsic factors controlling the differentiation of human midbrain progenitor cells

Levodopa treatment provides marked symptomatic relief. However, within 5-10 years after the start of Levodopa treatment, most PD patients display a gradual loss of drug efficacy. Importantly, the neuropathology of PD is dominated by a marked loss of dopaminergic neurons located in the substantia nigra.

Monitoring of power system events at transmission and distribution level

Monitoring of events in the power system provides a great deal of insight into the behavior of the system. Events with impact on the entire power system typically occur in or near the transmission network and are therefore best monitored at transmission system substations. This puts great demands on the equipment and in general restricts the use of the data since it becomes property of the transmi

Reduced pulsatile wall motion of abdominal aortic aneurysms after endovascular repair

PURPOSE: The reduced size of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) after endovascular repair suggests lowered intraaneurysmal pressure. In the presence of endoleaks, the size is not decreased. Although postoperative intraaneurysmal pressure is difficult to record, the pulsatile wall motion (PWM) of aneurysms can be measured noninvasively. The aim of this study was to assess the PWM of AAAs before and

A population-based study on the first forty-eight breast cancer patients receiving trastuzumab (Herceptin (R)) on a named patient basis in Sweden

Several studies have presented data on the efficacy and tolerability of trastuzumab within clinical trials. As a minority of patients is included in these trials, we undertook this retrospective study to describe trastuzumab therapy in clinical routine and its tolerability. We reviewed the medical records of the first 48 patients in Sweden who received treatment with trastuzumab on a named patient

The anti-inflammatory profile of inhaled corticosteroids combined with salmeterol in asthmatic patients

Inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy such as fluticasone propionate (FP) is effective in moderate-to-severe asthma, but for patients on ICS who still experience symptoms, treatment guidelines recommend either increasing the dose of ICS or adding a long-acting beta2-agonist such as salmeterol or formoterol. Several studies have now shown that adding salmeterol provides greater clinical benefit than

Flera verk är välkända, t ex radhusområThis thesis deals with the regional aspects of Swedish modernism exemplified by the architecture of Hans Westman (1905-1991). The main purpose of the dissertation has been to make a survey of what is perceived as particularly regional in Westman's buildings and if we can really talk about modern regional architecture. Modernism's breakthrough brought about the introduction of an architecture which

Improved performance in silicon enzyme microreactors obtained by homogeneous porous silicon carrier matrix

The catalytic performance of porous silicon (PS) micro enzyme reactors (muIMER) is strongly dependent on the PS matrix morphology for enzyme immobilisation. PS was achieved in the muIMER by anodisation in a HF-ethanol mixture. PS etching of structured silicon surfaces commonly results in an inhomogeneous pore formation. The deep channel microreactors described herein have previously suffered from

Asbestos and cancer: An overview of current trends in Europe

This review assesses the contribution of occupational asbestos exposure to the occurrence of mesothelioma and lung cancer in Europe. Available information on national asbestos consumption, proportions of the population exposed, and exposure levels is summarized. Population-based studies from various European regions on occupational asbestos exposure, mesothelioma, and lung cancer are reviewed. Asb
